Hey everyone! While it is -50 wind chill today I'm trying to keep warm thinking about spring! This is a picture of the gazebo we made out of an old corn crib. Last summer we picked up a hood from an old truck.....I'm thinking of using it for an awning over the doorway of the gazebo. What do you think? I thought maybe using chains but Tim thinks it needs to be held up with posts so it is more secure (he's usually right!). Looking forward to your opinions! Thanks, Carol

I love it, but that sky is scary!

Did you post a picture of it last summer just covered in vines?

I also vote for the posts for the truck hood awning. Better safe than someone getting a concussion :-)

Is it rusty or painted and will you leave it the way it is or repaint?

I love rust in the garden, but also love bright colors :-)

I made all nine in two days. Maybe I do something different. I stack and glue the pieces all at once. I don't have the patience to wait for each piece to set...the tall thin one is my favorite. I found Candle sticks and the mini vases on top at one yard sale Saturday Morning and had it put together as soon as I got home. If you want to see them close up click on the picture and I have singles of each close up in the album on Picasa. I must confess the red birdbath is simple clear glass that I have painted with glass paint. I wanted to try my hand at revers painting on glass. I am please with the results. I may have to make another painted one I have lots of clear glass but color sure makes a statement. When I started I was only gonna make one or two, Because I had no interuptions I just kept going! I wanted One of each color of the rainbow! LOL They will all be displayed in one Bed, held in with sand then Mulch. I also found Brand New White vinyl edgeing to use but I want to paint it first or at least wash it with some color. I am worried about Hurricane season. LOL Here are some pics of the bird bath. I just wanted to report my results of my experiment. I did containers for the front of my house with carpet of snow alyssum and white cosmos. Only the alyssum germinated. I put all my Cosmo seeds in these containers so it looks like I am going to have to buy white cosmos this year. I did containers for my back patio with petite yellow marigold, cosmic orange cosmos, and royal carpet alyssum. Again only the alyssum germinated. The same marigold seeds that I sowed in separate cups germinated just fine. So I will transplant some of the marigolds into these patio containers. I've never seen the orange cosmos at the nursery, so I will have to look for something tall and yellow/orange to add to the containers. On the bright side - I will not have to buy alyssum.

What a nice space for a garden. I like the rock wall. What kind of light does this area get? Dappled sun and shade all year like in the photo, or either more sun or more shade during the growing season? What is your soil like? I find it difficult to tell how large the area is, so a ballpark estimate would help to tell what there is space for. I'd start with removing any non-garden plants growing here and then mulch (cardboard with cut-outs for the hosta with an organic mulch like chopped leaves or wood chips on top) and weed a lot the first year so that when you add plants your weeding and maintenance will be minimal. Since this area will be visible as folks go in and out of the door, having plants with year-round interest and/or some ornament such as sculpture or a birdbath will be important in making this area appealing. I think I would try to plant mostly lower growing items in the front part of the garden, or at least airy plants so that the stone wall is a visible feature. If some of these are evergreen/gold/red, they will provide interest in the winter. In the upper part behind the stone wall, if there is room I'd add background plants with year round interest such as a colored foliage evergreen, and /or variegated red-twigged dogwood, ones that would stand out well against the light walls. With any woody plants, check the ultimate size and be sure you have room to paint or do maintenance behind it if it isn't a plant like the dogwoods which don't mind being cut to the ground. If there is enough light, a pretty trellis with a clematis that gets cut back in the winter (type 3 pruning) would feature the clematis in the growing season and the trellis in the winter. I would probably put a row of low-growing or easily pruned evergreens such as one of the smaller boxwood varieties under the window to provide winter interest and then plant the rest of the area with perennials to give you more interest in the growing season. Particularly in a smaller garden such as this that is in such a prominent place, thinking about varying the foliage color and texture (as you are doing in thinking about adding coral bells) will help add interest to the garden when there aren't many blooms. In addition to the library as a resource, Pennsylvania has public gardens that might give you inspiration, both for plants and for design. pkponder, I think this is the picture I posted last summer. The truck hood has a wonderful rusted patina and I love it that way so will not be painting it. I think posts are the way to go.

Love your gazebo made from the corn crib...very cool! I vote for posts too...car hoods are pretty heavy.

It must be something about the frigid weather and being sick of winter that get's us northerners motivated. I vote for the extra support also.

The first photograph is awesome for giving the feeling of impending storm! I don't think I have ever seen another gazebo made out of a corn crib. What an excellent idea and very pretty!

Indigosunshine, was your gazebo in a magazine or online article, maybe Facebook or linked from Facebook? I do lurk here a lot, but it seems that I've seen your greenhouse or a similar one somewhere else.

What kind of truck did the hood come from? I'm partial to old fifties Chevy trucks, really curvy and feminine :-) I can't wait to see it!

pk....first of all, I don't know what kind of truck, let you know when we dig it out of the snow! My gazebo wasn't in a magazine. I saw one similar at a garden center in Eau Claire, WI and I am a better imitator than creator! Just happy with the results!

You are talking to a gal that starts dreaming of spring storms this time of year. As much as I love the beauty of winters too being cooped up to long makes me cranky. Plenty of projects to keep me busy inside too but I think I go through acute withdrawal of having my hands to clean and soft. :-)
My bedroom faces East and one wall is all sliding glass door. Outside there is a small patio, bird feeding station, septic mound and pipes, corner of propane tank and a long sweeping hill with trees, shrubs and path. I have been sick a lot the last two years so I spend a lot of time resting and looking out at that view. It is actually lovely except for the few things I have to screen out. I have gotten a lot of great ideas here on GW and elsewhere. One thing about winter is that it gives you a real appreciation for forms and spacial relationships. When all the leaves and plants are lush with growth I don't notice mother natures architecture nearly as much.

That is a beautiful setting. Love your gazebo, but you can keep that cold weather. I like my zone 7, even though it is a bit chilly lately all over.
