My heart is breaking

I just got an e-mail from our sons' headmaster that one of my eighth grader's classmates was killed in a home fire. I am torn between running to school and grabbing him, and letting him stay with his friends. It's a small school, just 45 kids in the eighth grade. My heart breaks for the family. I keep thinking of David in the OT praying and tearing his garments when his son was dying. When the Lord took his son he dressed himself and went on. When his servants asked him why, he said because the child was with the Lord now. Faith.

I'm sorry to be a dark cloud amidst all of the Christmas joy posts, but I've called my sister, my husband and my best friend and got answering machines all around. I didn't even leave a message.

Oh, Nancy! How sad!

There was a house fire here about 2 weeks ago that killed 3 kids and their mother. The dad tried to get them out. It was just awful! Their source of heat had been disconnected by the utility company. It started by a candle.

Your son will probably get comfort being with his friends, and I would hope they have counselors there to help the kids cope with their grief.

God bless the kids having to deal with something so painful at such a young age.

I'll be thinking of you all during this sad time.

Patti, I am deeply sorry to hear about the passing of Dickens. I truly understand what you are going through, having lost many cats and dogs in my life, some of whom I shared long happy long lives with as you and your Dickens surely did. They warm our laps and it warms our hearts. They sense our emotions and console our souls at times when no one else can. They are as little children, needing our love and care, and we love them as just that. Did she actually tell you they were breaking up? Maybe he just realized that he isn't ready to live with someone. You know--you have to adapt to having another person in your space. You have to clean the house a little better than you would if you were alone. You have to clean the dishes a little sooner than you might otherwise. You always have to remember to put the toilet seat down! Maybe he saw a little look that day he gave her that diamond "birthday" ring and realized the disappointment in her eye that it really was "just" a birthday ring and that it didn't come with a proposal. And maybe that scared him--made him realize that she's thinking of marriage perhaps a lot sooner than 5 years and that was a little too much for him to handle. Especially if he's the same age (or thereabouts). I would not lay on her all of your experiences. That someone better might come along. Because even if this guy wants to date someone else, he might just realize your gal is the one for him. Sometimes it takes another date or relationship to help sort things out.

She may not be out of the woods yet. You need to hire an attorney to get the arrest records expunged or sealed. Many employers now just hire out their records search to an agency who will run the arrest record and conviction record. Since your daughter was arrested for a felony it will still be a matter of public record and searchable. Getting the charges dismissed means that she wasn't convicted but unfortunately, innocent until proven guilty doesn't mean anything to an employer. They get to set the rules they care about, and if they care about charges (which they probably will) then you still can't get the job. Before anyone goes crazy on companies, this is a problem with a litigious society. Employers could be on the hook for their employees' actions if those actions were foreseeable (such as public record for arrests).

I feel sorry for the family, but I don't blame the cruise line. Facts keep changing, but last I read was that the grandfather put the child up on the railing in front of a open window. You don't put children on top of railings. Very poor judgment of the grandfather. A few years ago a mother put her child on top of a railing at a African dogs exhibit at our local zoo . The child fell in and the dogs killed the child. I don't blame the zoo . Idiot mother.

Nancy,

Your son will need you to talk about this with him. I know your family has a strong religious background, and that you will help him understand and deal with the loss of his friend. It is important for him not to internalize this.

Am I correct in assuming this is your youngest son?

With the faith in God you express on this forum...you will know how to help your son through this very sad time in his life.

Thank you. You guys were right; he just called me to make sure I knew, but he wants to stay with his friends. You're also right about the praise music. I put it on because I can't listen to HGTV and such just now. How does someone get through life without faith and friends.

Oh Nancy, how awful! You made the right decision to let him stay at school. He needs to be with his friends. Did the rest of his family survive? Was the house destroyed? That family is going to need so much right now, not just material things, but lots of prayer. I'm so sorry.

The 21 year old son was the only one to survive. From what I had heard, I didn't think he would make it, but I just went to our local paper's real time site, and it says that he was released from the hospital already. The house is gone.
I met the parents for the first time a couple of years ago at a 6th grade parents' luncheon. (yes, Sandy, he's my youngest.) Her dad told me he was a Pastor, and when I asked him what kind of Church he laughed and said that I wouldn't be familiar with it. C&MA. I laughed harder when I told him we go to a Christian &Missionary Alliance Church! I always wanted to go to his, but he was a few towns away, and I always counted on "tomorrow." I do know that I know that I will see them again. (1 Thessalonians 4: 13-14)

Oh Nancy so sorry for the tragedy, will be praying for all concerned. It is terribly when tragedy strikes and seems like even harder to bear when it is around the Holidays. Prayer gets us through the difficult times, just stay strrong in faith. Hugs to you

Just be there and listen between the lines. We have had two deaths in the last month at dd's school. Her first experience with loosing a friend happened when she was in the 6th grade. It really affected her. And just recently a close friend of her boyfriend was killed on a crochrocket. Head on into a car. She went to the funeral with alot of other kids. He had graduated last year.. He had told his parents if anything ever happened he wanted to be buried in his baseball uniform with all his buddies carring the casket. Alot of kids were there. it was dd's first funeral .. it totally tore her up to see his body lying there...and his mom was hysterical. She says life is short, you should always make time for your friends... and tell the people you love...that you do. She gave alot of her friends a hard time about not being there for each other... And no way should they try to make it though life without God. She is doing better itjust takes time.

I'll be praying for all of you....Perhaps some real time help for the 21 yr. old son who lived. He will be needing a place to stay, and help with planning for funerals, let alone someone to just talk and cry with. I don't know how anyone would be able to get through without prayers.
