DH heart surgery today

According to Dr Dietrich, Fred did fine during surgery.......which took 3 hours!!!

I was a nervous wreck as I expected it to take half that time. Apparently there were some unexpected things the catscan last Wed. didn't show. And there is a chance he'll need more surgery tomorrow! Damn.

Plus that news really didn't go over well with him (as expected).

I'll try to explain without butchering what the doc said. He even drew out a diagram to make it easier to understand. But the aneurysm is close to one of Fred's kidneys, and something about the arteries branching off right there. So the stint wasn't put exactly where Dr. D. had wanted it. They will do another cat scan in the morning to see how the blood flow is doing, and if all is well, then he can come on home. However if its not, then they'll go back in and put another stint in a different place. In which case, he should be home Wed.

He's in a LOT of discomfort, but luckily is sleeping a lot. They have him in an ICU bay and he'll spend the night there. But visiting in that area is very restricted.

One person at a time, for only 15 min., and two hours between visits during the day. My oldest son went by this morning and is going back later and taking Fred some "good food" in hopes his Dad will be starving and able to eat (as opposed to nauseated and not wanting anything ). My daughter is going by at 3 or 5.

Jason was there all morning, while I stayed home with my Dad (tho he's recovering well from his two falls a couple of weeks ago). Fred had said no reason for me to sit around waiting room all morning. So I took care of Dad's needs, and talked to Jas a couple of times.

I will go back to see Fred with him at 7. going to be a miserable night for my husband in that ICU bay. He's going to feel rotten, some pain tho I sure hope not a lot with all the meds. But no phones, no TV (there goes his Mon night football).

I can call the desk to check on him, but can't talk to him in person.

So I'd appreciate some more good thoughts and prayers that further surgery not needed and he can come home tomorrow.

Hhireno--thanks for asking about DH. Almost seems like a lifetime ago that he had his surgery. So much has happened since March 5. DH is doing very well. He was discharged on March 11 and came home. I had taken so much time off from work during the previous two weeks that I ended up going into work the next day, leaving him home with our dog. Those first three days were extremely difficult not being home with him. I'm sorry I had to make that choice, but we made it through without any issues. When he was discharged they had him on an antibiotic for an infection at an IV site. Not a pretty sight. They only prescribed 5 days worth and it was not any better so I brought him to our local ER where they prescribed meds for another 5 days at twice the dosage. That did the trick. A week after being home he sneezed without his pillow and pulled a muscle in his chest, which caused him more pain than his chest incision. Thank goodness it was on his right side because he would have thought it was his heart giving him the pain. Only now that pain has finally gone away. We were scheduled to see the surgeon last Tuesday, however, received a call the previous day rescheduling to this Tuesday. Unfortunately I have a huge conference I'm running on Wednesday so cannot go with him. My DB has offered to drive him down, which I'm thankful for. Otherwise, he would have taken the bus, since he's not allowed to drive yet. Hopefully the surgeon will give him the green light on Tuesday and our lives will start getting back to something close to normal. We are scheduled to close on our current house and our new build home on May 15. Packing hasn't begun, but I've given myself until this Thursday and will start in earnest then. The past 3+ months have gone by so quickly. I can't believe we are leaving our home of the past 20 years and on to a new adventure. Just holding my breath that we make it to the other side.

Bless you and yours, I know it is a stressful time for you. My DBIL woke my sister up Friday morning about 1 AM sweating and having problems breathing. At the hospital he was stablized and then had a massive coronary attack. He died about 2 AM and he was 41 years old. No high blood pressure or cholesterol. My sister's faith is strong and she is doing much better emotionally than I would have expected her too. I don't know if the sudden deaths are easier than the long illnesses. Clare- I am so sorry that you are dealing with this especially since it's long distance. The POA and the DNR are important documents and I think all the siblings should have a copy. I'm responsible for my Father who moved in with us when my Mom died 3 years ago. He made out a new will and POA and DNR and I gave copies to both of my brothers. I didn't want any misunderstanding if something were to happen to Dad and I had to make important decisions. You mentioned surgery but you didn't say what the doctor's opinion was, what the risk factors are or how much improvement might be achieved. I think you need more information before you try to help your Mom. Exactly what surgery has been proposed? If your brother is withholding information maybe you or your sister could visit and take her on one of her appointments. Maybe you would feel better if you were able to spend some time with your Mom now. My Dad just had a pacemaker implanted. His heart was only pumping at 20% because the lower 2 chambers were not pumping in the proper rhythm. Plus his valves are worn out so half of the blood that was pumped out fell right back into the chamber. He has terrible circulation, can't walk without a walker, can only walk about 50 feet without resting, one carotid is completely blocked and the other only has 10% blood flow. He was so short of breath he couldn't dress himself. The pacemaker has made a huge difference - the shortness of breath is completely gone, his heart is in correct rhythm, his fingertips are no longer blue, he bathes and dresses himself, and his skin tone is pink again. He still can't walk far but that's because of peripheral artery disease. Mentally he is very alert, the procedure was short and fairly low risk. So it was an easy decision. However no one was in favor of more extensive surgery especially my Dad. And he is a 'ticking time bomb' but as he says 'who isn't at age 89?' I hope everything works out for you.

Oh...Karen...my heart is with you! I can't believe you have so much on your plate all at once.

I pray for Fred to have an uneventful recovery. I had to chuckle at your comment that he had to miss Friday night football!

You are so blessed to have such a wonderful family.

I'm praying for a quick recovery, and my thoughts are for you and the rest of your family too. I know how hard it is on the family of the patient. It's very exhausting, when someone is in ICU, and the hours are so restricted, but you want to be there all the time. Take care of yourself too!

Thank you Everyone, for all the great prayers and thoughts.
You did a great job....
The catscan this morning showed NO leakage and yesterday's surgery/stint was successful.
So he's just been released and is home now!!! He can't drive his car for 7 days, it's a stick shift, but other than that he's ok. He has a follow up appt in two weeks.

Karen, I am so glad your husband came out of his surgery so well! I'm still waiting for the day when open heart surgery is an outpatient procedure. lol! I know he has be relieved to be home (and able to watch TV). You, Fred and your dad will remain in my thoughts and prayers.

I have not had much computer time lately, and am thankful that Fred is doing good!
Bill had abdominal anurysm surgery in 2005. His surgery went fine and recovery time was good. Here's hopeing and praying that Fred will recover quickly too!
