Eggplant just starting to set fruit. Is there time?

I have a black beauty eggplant that has just started to set fruit. Is there still time for them to mature before I see a potential first frost at the end of September?

I got a ton of rain this spring into early summer. Temps were on the cooler side than normal. The plant about 3-4' tall. One fruit is about 2 inches long. There are about 10-15 more flowers on it. I don't know how long they take to grow. Should I prepare to cover it with some kind of plastic in order to gain a couple of weeks? I don't need to get all the fruit, but to get 2-4 would be nice.

I don't normally eat eggplant, but I grew it, I will try it. If I like it, I already have a packet of seeds for next year. $.16 at Walgreens. Yeah!!!

If the gods are good , maybe. Eggplants like it hot. I just started to harvest my eggplant, we have had a cool summer also. If I were at the just flowering stage I would give up for this year. But that being said, you never know, we could have the hottest Sept. on record. Since the plants are there, if your not planning on putting something else there, wait and see. Good Luck.

Last year my eggplants grew well in September, so hopefully you'll get a good harvest. I'm in the same boat as you, I've picked a couple, but many of the plants are just starting to set fruit. Let's cross our fingers for a warm Sept.!
I tried to grow my eggplant this spring inside from seed, and they were still tiny when it came time to plant. I didn't start early enough, I think you need to start the seeds in March and probably use a grow light. I ended up buying plants because I didn't think mine would mature in time.

Never can get from flower to harvestable eggplant fruit in 10 days, IN MY EXPERIENCE. I have gardened in GA for years. You can hardly get cukes and zukes from flower to fruit in a week.

Do you know how long it takes from the setting of a fruit to edible fruit? This week is supposed to be quite nice (finally) so I'm crossing my fingers and hoping maybe, just maybe, I can get a few eggplants. Dave, sounds like you love them too. I have a Lebanese bunching, a long purple (think that might actually be its name, but not sure), Rosa Bianca, Beatrice, and Nadia. franeli, I may just try that next year. Yes, eggplants are more cold sensitive than peppers and tomatoes. They do *not* need to ripen. They taste best when immature, so pick them at the size you want them. Fruit set minimum is typically mid 50's for Italian eggplants and low 50's/upper 40's for Japanese eggplants. Do you have bees? If not, that could be a reason for lack of fruit set. Use a Q-tip or just shake the flowers gently every day to promote pollination. If temperature is the issue, can you rig up a hoop-supported row cover? It may bump up night temps. enough for some fruit.

Good morning, No, it's not too late. You should have enough time for most varieties. Most of us in zone 5 put out our tomatoes at the end of May, usually Memorial Day weekend, so you're only a little bit behind. Folks who plant earlier in May have hoop houses or use other devices to get the plants through days/nights that might be too chilly for tomatoes. Those folks are very dedicated, but most of us are casual gardeners and not so organized and equipped. :-) Heck, some of the ones I have in the ground are still only about 18 inches high. Go for it and enjoy your tomatoes. :-)
