This is my very first time growing eggplant - I have two plants of "Little Prince" from Renee's Garden. They started flowering mid-July and I have 3-4 little fruits on one of them forming the size of marbles. Hopefully the other one will bear fruit as well as they both have lots of flowers. This is a "mini" variety - off the top of my head I forget the mature size of the fruit so I'll have to check. The plants themselves are in containers and are only about a foot and a half high. They're very healthy looking now, altho it took a while to get there - they were so small and just sat doing nothing for so long, were attacked by flea beetles, I really thought they'd kick the bucket! But now they're healthy looking plants. Can't wait to taste one! Lisa

Thank you everyone for wonderful answers! I really appreciate it. My plants are located on a balcony and get sun from roughly 1 pm to 8 pm. Maybe they are being cooked by afternoon sun? I have tried pollinating flowers both morning and evening, so I am not sure it is a humidity problem. We have had a few days above 90, but generally temps have ranged 80-85 during the day and 60-65 at night. I suppose that even if I never harvest fruit, the plants themselves are beautiful ornamentals. But...sigh...I really, really happen to have a taste for eggplant this season, LOL!

How have you been fertilizing them? They are kind of picky eaters and if you give them too much nitrogen by itself, they won't ever fruit (same with peppers too). If you haven't fertilized them at all, then you're depending on your soil to give them the nutrients they need and it's usually lacking in at least one area. If you give them a little Phosphorous heavy fertilizer, they should start fruiting. I usually give less than the recommended amount, but more frequently.

Hi I wish you the best with your Brandywine tomatoes but I don't think they will set and ripen with the temperatures dropping, it is better in the fall to plant short season varieties and leave the long season varieties for spring. Green beans the same. Chinese cabbage, miners lettuce and broccoli will do fine even after the freeze, last winter I only cover the lettuce in the bed, all the other crops were uncovered and did fine. If you plant collards are very good after the frost, they get sweet. Here is a picture of the lettuce that got covered Silvia
