Foxtail Fern Questions

I recently purchased a foxtail fern at a local nursery. When I brought it home I took it out of the plastic pot it was in and put it in a ceramic pot with a hole in the bottom to keep indoors. I thought I could break up the root ball but decided against it since the roots were very well packed. I've been watering it once every few days but the water mostly just runs out the bottom of the pot. It gets sunlight from the windows it's near only in early morning, after about noon there's no direct sunlight in the windows.

When I received it I pruned off the dead growth and continued to water it when it felt dry. My issue is that I keep noticing more of the growths are turning yellow and dying. It's not real fast but it seems like the internal growths keep dying on me. I don't know if I'm not watering it enough, if it has too much/little sunlight, or if the pot isn't big enough. I would repot it in new soil but I don't know how to break up the root ball because it is extremely tightly packed.

Any help someone may be able to provide is greatly appreciated.

Hello Matt,

Congrats, on your new Foxtail Fern.

FF's dislike heat. Fronds will brown if air is hot.
Some humidity is required.
Direct sun, 'especially if your plant was in shade at the store,' will burn fronds.

Although I don't believe in over-potting most plants, FF should have plenty of space, especially if the medium dries fast.

If you're watering daily, either the room is too warm, or your FF needs a larger pot.

Did you notice the amount of space between root-ball and 'new' inner container?

Haven't had one of these plants myself, but it sounds like there may be a solid ball of hydrophobic peat as the rootball. If so, it's much easier to remove after a soak in a bucket of water so it can accept water again. It make take 30-60 minutes to soak to the inside if it's really hard/solid. Usually the peat will crumble away easily at that point. But sometimes it won't, in which case I might decide it's easier on me and the plant to first cut off the bottom third to half of the root ball. Then remove as much excess peat from the top as possible. Cut a slit from top to bottom on each side of the remaining mass. Repot with some room on the sides as well as putting a little new soil to replace that taken from the top. This should give the plant a good shot at growing some new roots, and help keep the inner ball from drying so fast in the process. When you repot next time, you should be able to remove most of the remaining peat without tearing so many roots.

The ones I see in pots in this area are always in shade but a little morning sun might be preferable in PA, IDK...

Hi TFW. What size is the current pot? Foxtails grow large, take a LOT of space. Have a picture? If you'd like your new Foxtail to grow larger, repot in a bigger container. If you want to keep your Foxtail 'x' size, remove and divide. Don't discard tubers..yep, when you repot tubers should be buried. Last fall, 'because of space,' I divided Foxtail and Ming Ferns which were terribly root-bound. Wait until you 'attempt' removing from container..Eat your spinach first..lol. Because I ran out of soil, Foxtail was repotted in 'mostly/98%' bark. Only problem is bark dries faster so Foxtail and Mings need more water. Or I should say, watered more often than plants in soil mediums. BTW, I had to 'saw' roots in thirds. So, good luck dividing. Toni

Planto.. I don't know your MIL's age, but it's ironic how, well, let's say, 'grandma's, etc,' grow plants without fussing, yet they're greens do wonderful. Have you noticed? My grandmother grew an AV in a ceramic pot, w/o drainage, several feet from an obstructed, curtained window, yet AV lived for years, and bloomed, too.. She watered whenever, and never fertilized. My friend's mother grew various plants, including CC/TC in butter containers w/o drainage. They did fantastic, flowered during the holidays. Some of her plants, especially CC/TC were kept in a cold, unheated porch, that faced north. Your MIL has a gift..maybe one day she'll pass her secret to you... :) When you say ferns, do you mean Ming/Foxtail or true ferns? Hardy ferns here in IL die back, but pop up in spring..They prefer cooler temps but once temps dip in the 30's, stems and fronds die back. Planto, I'm not sure where you're located, only that you live in z8. Sorry, bad memory.. :) FPT..do you have a cool room? When Ming/Foxtail are brought inside, they're placed in a back room which happens to be cool/cold, especially nightime. If enough water is given, very few fronds fall. Windows face south and east but light is low. They're set under/near a 6' flourescent light. No full sun, heck, hardly any. Problem is, now that they've been out in the cold so long, frond drop is inevitable. I should KNOW better, but they were and are still healthy and green. Once they come in though................. My friend, the same friend who's mother grew CC/TC in butter containers, had a huge, 6' plus, Asparagus Fern hanging before a south window..Her AF was amazing.. Alongside the window was a huge radiator...steam radiators are so much better than vents or space heaters. The air doesn't dry as much. Wish our house was heated with radiators instead of vents. What type of heating source do you have? You can cut back fronds, or place a piece of paper beneath, until your Af adapts??? Do you plan on placing your AF in a hanging basket? Wonder if your neighbor is sorry he/she gave your his/her AF..lol. Especially since you got it to flower and berry.. Are berries green or red? So, what will you do? Bring inside? Cut stems? BTW...don't know if you can see the saucers, but they're much larger than containers. When fronds drop, most, 'not all,' land in the saucers which is preferable to the carpet.

Here's a follow-up. I pulled my foxtail fern out of the pot. I dusted as much loose soil from the roots as would easily fall away. I then cut the root ball in half with a pruning saw. It was actually rather easy to cut. I then root-pruned each half until I could them nicely and easily into the center of their respective new pots. They turned out pretty good. Carol

GF - Plants are naturally shedding organisms; they automatically balance their root to shoot ratio. IOW, if you prune off a fraction of the top of a plant, and leave the roots intact, the plant has internal chemical messengers that stimulate the plant to quickly replace the 'missing' top growth. If you prune roots and leave the top intact, the plant is stimulated to focus its energy allocation on replacing roots. If there is a significant loss of either top mass or bottom (root) mass, die back (shedding) of it's counterpart can occur. You can't prevent that from occurring, and the only hand you might play is by simultaneously pruning roots and shoots so they end up in balance when you're done; but still, the plant will do the fine tuning because you'll find that there is a relationship between particular roots and particular branches that varies in the degree of dedication, one to the other, by species. IOW, root A has a closer relationship to branch A than any other branch and the exclusivity of that relationship varies by species. The reciprocal of that relationship is also true. So, if you prune root A or branch A, the 'adjustment' in root growth or top growth will be greater in it's opposite counterpart more so than in the rest of the branches or roots. So a mechanism is in place whereby the entire organism as well as individual root to shoot relationships will automatically be balanced. Lauren - I did a little experiment with a bonsai tree. After measuring a rooms RH, I set the potted tree above a large tray full of water and pebbles and placed the same digital hygrometer used to measure the room's RH in its branches. A half hour later, RH had increased only .4 % - 4/10 of 1%, an insignificant amount. So, if your wish is to raise RH surrounding your plants, a humidifier suited to raising the RH of at least the room where the plants gather for companionship is the best way, followed distantly by grouping your plants together, though the more plants you have, the better the later works. I think you need to break up that root ball. Any plant that has a tight root ball will die because the water will run out of the pot around the root ball and it basically doesn't get any water.

I don't think I can agree that they don't like heat. They are used outdoors here in full sun for landscaping plants, and Houston is very hot for several months of the year.

Foxtail 'Ferns' are not ferns but are related to Asparagus. Here they're called Asparagus Ferns, and there's a lot of different varieties. They grow from small tubers, if broken off these can sprout and form new plants. That's why they've become serious weeds in some places and very difficult to get rid of. Digging them out usually results in numerous new small plants. And they're very tough, drought resistant, sun resistant, and almost extermination resistant.

Soaking the root ball and then washing all the old soil out won't hurt the plant. Depending on your climate be careful about how you dispose of any broken off bits.
