Tips wilting on new canes of raspberries, cause for concern?

I noticed the tips of the new and young canes of my red and black raspberries wilting in a distinct way. It does look like cane borer damage. I am guessing as I have never seen this before.

I cut off the tips of these canes 4-5 inches below the point of the wilt as directed.

Are these canes now going to grow OK or there is something else I ought to do?

And do these insects also attack purple raspberries and blackberries?

It could also be Raspberry Cane Maggot.

I found this on two varieties of raspberry (Dormanred and Blackhawk) and one blackberry (Arapaho) so far. A thread here from last May pointed me in the right direction- raspberry cane borer. These bugs make two girdling scars when they lay their eggs, causing the tips to wilt. I found a place with pictures of this and wanted to share the link. I'm experimenting trying to root the tips I cut off. They perked up in water, so I dipped them in Rootone and potted them. Will let you know how this works out. myk1; I kinda half-way wondered about that too, which is why I mentioned it - thinking someone may want to comment on that aspect of my pre-planting preperation. I've been trying to discount that in my own mind though by thinking that they say once Roundup hits the dirt it's done. The stuff I used was not target specific like poison ivy or anything, but it was the good stuff, like 46% or something like that. Then I thought, well..., Roundup is sometimes slow to show effects on broam, maybe 7-10 days, but then you have a good idea you hit it good and in a couple weeks it'll look like scorched earth. That these plants have been in 40 days, can it be that even Roundup would take that long to have an effect, and wouldn't it be getting 'em all? (I wish I hadn't said that...)But then again mostly Roundup is sprayed directly on leaves, so if there is any residual in-the-root action going on I wouldn't know that so maybe it would take longer to show an effect on my raspberries if it's first contact is with a root system somehow... Then I reasoned that heck, I placed a mound of new humus and topsoil that's made my planting bed maybe 5" or so higher than the original soil grade level, and that my understanding is that Raspberries are shallow rooted. I took care to not plant them too deep, etc. But I don't know I may just be trying to convince myself that I didn't doom my plants from the get-go! Do you have any thoughts on the tiny skinny little multi leged gray/brown worm things? I was just out there and noticed every plant had about on average 10 dead ones laying around them as a result of me spraying them earlier. Thanks!

Pruning the tip of the lone primocane is not likely to spur growth of more canes, but it will cause lateral branches to grow out of the main cane. If those floricanes are short and spindly, the whole thing was probably dug not long ago, and as Scott said, it will take time for the clump to get going. That's a fairly large pot, but it may hinder production long-term. Put plenty of composted manure or other fertilizer on it in the off-season, November through March.

Jerijen - thank you so much for suggesting I contact Baldo. He was kind enough to respond immediately to my inquiry. His words: "the culprit is a stemboring sawfly in the sawfly family "Cephidae". This group of stemboring sawflies has about seven species distributed throughout the United States. In California, the most common species is called the rose stemboring sawfly and goes by the species Hartigia cressonii...These sawflies usually emerged from overwintering pupae in infested stems of roses, raspberries, and blackberries about this time of the year generally between late April thru early June which coicides with new stems being produced on roses for the second bloom cycle...Unfortunately there are no good controls available...I only prune off those stems that show the symptoms that you described"

You can tell if its cane borer by looking for two rings cut into the cane just below the wilting area. I can only speak for Royalty purple raspberries, but it is common practice to cut off the tips of new canes anyways since it encourages lateral branches to form on the canes, and obviously also keeps the height of the canes in check. As long as you are cutting low enough to actually remove the borers (a few inches below the lowest ring), there should be no further problems. That's been my experience, at least. About 40% of my canes are attacked by borers every year, and my patch has been very productive for the past 10 years.

Hi Katyajini,

I've had what sounds like similar symptoms in my black raspberries for the past two years and have been trying to find out what might be the problem (and hoping that I'm not going to lose this amazing patch of one of my favorite fruits!)

I've looked for borer damage and have found none. My recent bout of online research is leading me to believe that I've got a form of raspberry mosaic virus (also referred to as black raspberry necrosis). This form of the virus often doesn't result in the mottling of leaves, but instead causes the tips of new canes to curl downward, turn black, and die.

I don't know if that might help explain the symptoms your plants are having, but I think its put me on the right track with mine.

gnomeabram: I did not see those characteristic two rings and the wilt is only on the newly emerging canes. Good to know that those borers do not hurt the plants terminally.
