Hi Woollady..Wow, a 16" pot IS large. I hope its container is plastic instead of clay or ceramic so you don't have to lug around something that feels like it weighs a ton.

How much space is between the bottom/inner pot and the lowest roots? If your Ti is planted too high, (midway or higher) with excess soil between roots and inner pot, you can always remove soil, lower the plant, but if your Ti is completely rootbound, you'll probably need to increase to an 18-20" container.

If repotting into a larger size is necessary, use a light-weight container, and lighter soil or soil-less medium. Unless you're used to using a certain mix, real soil and don't like going soil=less..
I prefer potting in the 'ugly,(terrible adjective) lol, plastic pots plants come in. If you choose decorative over plastic growing pots, especially heavy materials, then hauling an 18+" container is a big job, especially hauling outdoors in summer. If you have a dolly, and no stairs, that'd be the easiest way to haul outdoors. Home Depot sells dollys for 19.99 plus tax.

Anyway, check the roots. If you can lower the plant without roots being cluttered, give it a try, if not, it's time to find a larger container. Toni

PS..By removing plant from its pot, soil included, you can adjust Ti so it doesn't lean, and by lowering, just cover roots with additional soil so they're not exposed.

hi hopefulauthor,thanks for replying,yes,the plant is already heavy enough,its in a regular plastic pot,been in it for years,lucky i don;t have stairs,it has a soil-less medium,i've just been top dressing for years.the pot itself has been leaning too a tiny bit and when i looked there were roots coming out.i guess i'll have to pot up to a larger size.do you know how tall it can get just living in home conditions?THANKS

Did your Ti recently start leaning or has it happened gradually?
Since soil-less mix is so light, a slight bump, or gentle movement can tilt the trunk. One reason stakes are used.) Or, if your plant is super rootbound, it's possible more roots are growing off one side, tilting the trunk. You'll know more once it's removed from the container.

There's quite a few Ti varieties, including some minis. The mini grows 7".
Actually, it's said, most container-grown, indoor Ti's reach 4', but size isn't written in stone. It depends. As long as it's producing roots and foliage, who knows how tall it can get, especially if your Ti is rootbound. The bigger the pot.....
Do you fertilize? Once a month balanced fertilizer during growing seasons, and/or organic fert, a proper size pot, humidity and good light, it might grow 7' tall. lol.
Do you want it to grow taller or halt growth?
If you'd like it to remain 4', fertilize 2-3 times per year, and keep in the same size pot.
But to be honest, none of my plants are in complete soil-less mix, so I don't know how often plants need fertilizer since soil less mixes haven't nutrients. Perhaps someone who uses total soil mix will chime in.

On the other hand, since you've managed to keep a Ti going a couple years, perhaps you should continue doing what you've been doing. Ti's are not the easiest plants grown indoors, so you're doing something right.. :) Toni

hi Toni,thanks for replying,yes,the pot has been slowly leaning to one side for abut a year,but i didntt want to check since its big and heavy.yes i fertilize once a month spring summer and fall,not in winter.i think i've had it for about seven years.it is the plain green with real long leaves.it's been a very easy plant for me.i have a total of 75 plants,some are regular houseplants you see in stores,30 orchids and 27 cacti and succulents. i think i would like to keep it at around 5'.it is in and 8' wide bay window with lots of indirect light,in the cold months.thank you so much for all yor help.take care aand have a great day.

Woollady~ I also have Ti plants & I got mine from a "junk magazine". In the description it said that they will get as big as the pot you keep them in... I'm not sure what the largest pot size is you can buy, but I'm going to keep potting mine up just to see how big they actually will get! :) I ordered 3 starts & only 2 survived, but one had a baby, so I'm back to 3 again. I potted mine all together in 1 pot, so mine have also gotten quite hefty!

What about cutting some of the roots off? I've heard of this w/ other plants, however I don't ever do this w/ my plants... I just pot-up. I have found Ti plants to be quite hardy & easy to grow, contrary to what Toni said, so I would assume this would be OK if it was necessary.
