Thank you for that helpful bit of info, will depend on how leafed out, don't know what to expect. I always water potted plants and let them sit a bit before I put them in. I tend to overwater, and the soil around here gets so dry so FAST these last few years! The new batch coming is going on the east side of the house, oh yes, I got Veilchenblau and 2 Gruss which are supposed to do well in part shade; it won't dry out quite so fast, but it does get dry, and I have to watch it. Next year I may not have to water so much as it seems the roots on stuff I put in last year have gone deeper. We've got rain on the way so I put off watering most stuff except scattered some poppy seeds. Now I have to keep that moist continually. I found a pretty pink columbine at HD and went and planted it out by the garage. The soil looked dry as a bone, but when I got down about an inch, it was nice and moist. Thanks for mentioning spreading out the roots a bit. I wouldn't have thought of that but do always try to dig a little bigger holes than I need and then fill back in to where the plant will be even or just a slight bit deeper. That gives the plant a little better start, chops off competing roots, and loosens the soil around them. My Austins look kind of pathetic but I have high hopes for some of them at least. What must the neighbors think, sticks poking out of the ground with funny shoots on them? Then I have seeds to plant to fill in, hope that works out ok. I will mulch around the roses and leave the bare soil until the seeds get going, if I'm lucky. Thanks again, you are a wonderful help and have been on other threads as well. I fell in love with these purple poppies, so will have to plant those, just came in the mail, so much to do. Those aren't the ones I scattered earlier today. the leafs are not really effected like peg says... they are mostly on the buds and because of this, the buds are not opening and the flowers are not blooming...on the plants that dont seem to have this, the flowers are fine...they came from the same place and are in close proximity,so i dont know why one is a problem and not the other unless its all a matter of time....i am going to try the alcohol mixture that peg suggested just in case...i figure it cant hurt............i have seen some flies (little 1/4 inch with greenish iridescent body and clear wings...not like a housefly at all), but i dont see any bullseye or big problems with leaves....if anyone has any suggestions or ideas, please let me know...this happened to my hibiscus last year as well..............carol

Forgive my ignorance. I repeat, I never had borers in the reeds of my roses. From what I understand the process is as follows: an insect enters the cane of the rose by the cut that was made, ie by the top. Then make a gallery down to deposit the eggs. And it keeps coming down ... Then there is something I do not understand: why in my reeds, these galleries are not drawn continuously. I explain ... if you look at the photographs you can see a piece with galleries ... then the reed are healthy ... down there are more galleries ... other healthy centimeters ... As an explanation I think that the galleries formed in this way, could only be formed if the insects penetrate in addition to the top, also by holes that make at different heights of the cane. I'm wrong And if I am right ... the problem of the borers is not solved only by sealing the cut that is done when pruning at the end of the cane. If the insects also penetrate at different heights ... then I do not see the solution !! Sorry if I am not understanding the problem of borers but looking at my photographs is very clear that it is not a single gallery formed from above continuously. They are discontinuous galleries and should therefore penetrate the sides ... Do you get me out of my error with your explanations? Thank you very much.
