I have to say that I am shocked with the blue sticky traps! Now, I don't think they will be completely controlling the problem when it is really bad, but the 1 trap I hung is covered in thrips! I just love going out to my roses and seeing all the dead thrips on it! Next year I will put out more, I just didn't find them in time this year to put them out when the thrips were the worst. I'm also going to order minute pirate bugs next year. I am worried that the traps will catch good guys too since they are so incredibly sticky, but I guess I will just have to take that chance.

EEEK Indeed! Ok, so I mildly panicked and ran out into the rain to see what was out there. I found 1 adult, and killed it good. Then I went through and scrapped off the eggs I could find. I see no evidence of borrowing, and I even sacrificed a squash plant to my panic that loked droopy [it's been raining HEAVILY for days, so I'm sure they just need a little sun] and there wasn't anything in there. First time I noticed these bugs [I'm quite attentive] was this past Sunday. I've only ever seen 2. I found about 20 eggs and got rid of them, mostly on 2 plants [not much on the other 8 or so squash plants]. I have been spraying weekly with neem oil every Sunday, but since it started raiing Sunday and hasn't stopped so I haven't sprayed this week. I assume that if I spray tonight or tomorrow [when it's supposed to clear up] it will kill the eggs and then there will be no burrowing, and the adults will stay away [again, they only showed up at the end of my 7 days without neem so i"m thinking if I keep spraying the chances of a fall squash feast are still good?] Thank you!

HabBob, I don't know exactly what our bugs are, but I've got them narrowed down to Leaf Hoppers. I've only seen one at a time, and I haven't seen it do anything other than sit there. We do have many "guard" bugs floating around, hover flies, wasps, spiders, robber flies, etc... so I think nature has reached some type of balance up here, and is keeping the bad bugs to a minimum. We also have the benefit of living within 200 ft of a marsh, which would be insanely buggy if it weren't for all the birds that hang around and eat like kings. We do keep a small amount of seed in a feeder on the window to keep them close. Heh, we even have a natural perimeter of antlions around the house. So, I guess my point is nature is taking care of business for us right now, so, no, I have not seen the activity you have. We're also on opposite corners of the lower 48, so there's gonna be a difference in coloration, behavior, and available predators. I'm in a very rural area up here, lots of nature. If you live in a more suburban/urban area, you might not have a whole lot of bugs to call on to help out. One thing I've been reading is to allow a part of yard/land/lawn to go wild and bring in the good bugs and bug eaters to your property. That might not help you this year, but might be useful in the future? On a side note: I got another ID on #3, "Yes, plant bug, family Miridae, but I think it is probably a species of Necro...Nicro...Narcoleptic (no, wait, that describes me sometimes)...Ah-ha!
