When to pick Armenian cucumbers?

So, my monster vines are finally producing, and I have a rather large cucumber coming (and many more babies on the way!) How do I know when to pick? Does it change color, get darker, something? Do I just pick based on length? Right now, it's pretty long but still the same pale green.

Not having grown Armenian cucumbers recently, I do recall that I did not let them grow longer than 12 inches as most of us do not like cukes when they get too many seeds. However, I did enjoy them and in the beginning with little experience growing cucumbers, they did grow very long and resembled a short baseball bat LOL. This year I am growing picklers, Fanfare, Tasty Green, Sugar Crunch cukes and they are doing very well.Typically, I pick cukes when they are about 7 inches long depending upon the variety. However, I still have Armenian cucumber seeds but do not have enough room to grow them this year. Good luck.

My vines are starting to produce like crazy now, I have already picked 3 and there are 10 growing!! I pick mine between 12" or 14". The 1st one I picked was a darker green but the other two were light green, all of them very tasty. Love them dipped in soy sauce as a snack.

Thank you for the feedback. That does explain a lot. I've never grown a melon before. The plants are in a large kiddie pool with some tomatoes and eggplant. Hopefully, that is enough for the roots. But the vines are just starting to gain some major length and size so it may be that the plant is not large enough for fruitset yet. The blossoms on the lemon cukes really are difficult to distinguish. I was staring at them for a long time yesterday trying to figure out which were females. But at least the one I pollenated the day before was, it started to grow. I pollenated an armenian cuke yesterday so we will see if it is a pollenation problem. I do see lots of bees buzzing around my garden. I found them in the squash blossoms yesterday doing their job. Ania

GrowingUp, length isn't such a good indicator. Especially since as the vines age, the cucumbers become shorter. I was thinking of posting a series of pictures showing different stages of growth for American slicers - people could decide at what stage the cukes should be picked. Then, I could show the same cukes cut into slices so that the interior could be seen. But, it would just be for fun. There are no right or wrong answers. Taste is subjective. You are the subject, how do you like your cucumbers? I like them before seeds have fully formed, crisp, and flavorful. If your American Longs are like my varieties of American slicers, I'd be picking them before they were completely smooth and round - with just a slight degree of that immature ridging. I hope you have enuf cukes to do a little experimenting. As Bmoser suggests, they develop VERY quickly and will soon become overmature (and stay that way ;o)! Start picking them. You'll soon become expert at selecting the stage you like best. Steve

Oh, cool. I have never tried either of those. I'll check the oriental store when I go tomorrow to get the stuff for hubbies terriaki chicken he is making for this weekend. They were closed tonight when I went so I stopped by a new phillipino store they just opened here and I didn't find what I needed but did find some kind of root that had a little green sprout on the end. I asked him what it was and promptly forgot the name, lol. I will plant it tomorrow and see if it grows. Its round and hairy, lol. Its bigger than a golf ball maybe the size of a lemon. Who would think I had to go all over town and couldn't find sesame oil. They used to have it everywhere.

Cucumber fruits grow quite rapidly. What is 4" one day could very well be 6" the next. You really can't pick them too soon (within reason). If you let them get too big, the seeds will be very large and the quality less.

In Phoenix I picked them every day and put them in my lunch. They were best for my purposes when about the size of a medium carrot.

I'm picking them in the general vicinity of 1.5" thick.

I don't know about anyone else's Armenian cukes, but mine are plotting world domination. The vines aren't satisfied with the trellis -- they want the fall cabbage bed and the path to DH's office as well.

They grow up to 24 inches best when picked below 18 I usually aim for around 14. Don't wait for them to darken and green color they are light in coloring
