The Dracaena that is usually grown for Lucky Bamboo is D. sanderiana.

At Wal-Mart I have seen (this year) them sell lucky bamboo as marginata and marginata as sanderiana. These aren't simply the odd plant tag mixed up here and there, it was the entire stock with obviously wrong names.

Post a pic of your plants and I am sure we can tell you which you have.

Good grief! That's even worse than the 'usual' label: "Foliage Plant".

I think your new plant is just very young and will beef up as it gets older.

Sorry everyone i made a mistake. i was thinking that marginata referred to what is really a warnekii. At least on google images.
But the question still applies but the leaves i was talking about are striped white and green.
Sorry about the mistake. How is one really supposed to keep all those dracaena seperate? :/

There is a Dracaena marginata 'tricolor' that I've seen at Walmart. It is white and green with a bit of red or pink. Here's a photo. Is that what you have?

I had a client ask me about a little desktop plant she had with a label that said ficus. It was actually a small schefflera. Wrong, or vague, tags make me NUTS!

Are you 100% sure it isn't one of the newish spider plants that has darker green leaves than the older ones, with white margins? I've got one and love it, but a newbie might think it's a Dracaena...

Im quite certain that it is indeed a dracaena. I have a few spider plants and the plan in quetion definetly has a stem, not just a rosette of thin pointy leaves.

I have one that has green on outside then a stripe of white, then green, so on, does this sound like what you have?? (Warneckii) That is one of my favorite Dracaenas, but Lucky Bamboo is just solid green, to me the foliage looks like ribbons of green on it. Bamboo is usually sold as mature bare roots or in little ceramic containers, if yours was sold in soil, I would say it is NOT lucky bamboo. They make the most off of commercialism unfortunatly.
Margainata has spiky leaves that grow up from the base, as the plant matures lower leaves drop and fall leaving a elognated bare stem, it can grow to ten feet, it has deep green with purple margins.

Well this is what i am talking about. Yes the leaves have alternating bands of white and green. However i have seen others refer to this plant on here both as warnekii and as lucky bamboo. So i am wondering if there is a variety of dracaena that has the same coloring as warnekii but grows more thin and spindly like the lucky bamboo i am used to seeing in stores.
Right now my plant is thin and spindly but it is young so that could be the cause. I'm just wondering what i might expect.

I was finally able to do some research and i thinks i have found the answer to my question. I think that given the proportion of leaf length to stem height my plant is probably a ribbon plant or a song of india.
Bummer, i was really hoping it was going to turn out to be a warneckii.

warneckii is easily gotten a hold of (around here anyway) I picked mine up at wally world for 7 bucks, maybe you can find one at your local wal-marts?? I have the most amazing luck with finding houseplants there in the winter, ones I never thought they would have:)
