My Hatiora Gaetnerii species (the older variety with wiskers)is setting buds but nothing on my hybrids yet.
I'm wondering if they get cool enough at nights. With my Schlums CC it's easy to just leave them outside to set buds in the fall but with the EC they have to be inside here when it's time to set buds so it's hard to have it cool enough for them.

Hosta, was your Easter Cactus in bloom when you got it? Some nurseries force plants to bud out of season.
If it was in flower, it might take a second year to reflower.
Easter Cactus, (at least here in IL) start budding/flowering April-May.
Stores sell them, in flower, usually two to three weeks before Easter Sunday.
KS-Girl said it all..keep holiday cactus out late in autumn. I leave mine out til first frost, from late Oct to November, depending on temps.

For the time being, place EC in a sunny location. Once you spot buds, do not rotate. Room temp should be warm, not hot. Water a tad more, but allow soil to dry between waterings...You can also add 1/4-1/2 strength flowering fertilizer. Good luck, Toni

No, It was giving to me in August with no buds or flowers. I have been keeping it in the East window at I have not moved it. I even have the light off in that room and it has been for 6 months still no blooms. This cactus had a purple outlining on the edge of it's segments/leaves. One of my thanksgiving cactus is on it's second show it has one flower, and one appears to be forming buds two for a second show. I really hope the easter cactus blooms. I have not seen the color of it yet!

A couple of things that can cause NO BLOOM..on a Christmas Cactus. The plant might bloom at Easter as a re-bloom but it should bloom around Thanksgiving toward Christmas.
Yours did not.

Where the plant is kept can decide. If air from a vent, or where a doorway is opened and closed often, directing air on the plant that changes the environment abruptly, can stop budding.
Too dry. the C.C. should be kept on the damp side when in bud and flower. Other times it is given water to drainage, then allowed to dry down somewhat.
The plant if kept too dry, will not form buds.

The water in the saucer below should not be allowed to stay there longer than 10 - 15 minutes.
When in bud, the plant should stay put...in the same position.
Other times, it can be moved from room to room, from one place to another.

Indoors or out....it makes no difference. The plant does not demand one way or the other.
If it is in a warm room, let it stay there. If in a cool room, let it stay there.
In the summer, it can go out of doors if you wish---but not necessary to set buds. Many C.C.'s stay inside and never go out, yet they bloom well. A cool room, one where the sun is not so intense, is appreicated.

During its growing season, give it good light...but never direct sunlight. Feed it 15/30/15....or 20/20/20..
If it goes outside, it can stay there until hit with slight frost. The cold can help the plant set its buds.
When taken inside to a sunny window, it should bloom in short order.

Your plant did not bloom this past XMAS...its not likely to flower until next Christmastime.

What sort of pot is it in? C.C.'s like to be kept root bound...but if necessary NOW...March, is a good time to re-pot. Clay is an excellent pot material to put a C.C. in.
Whatever pot its in, the plant must drain well.
Let it dry down between waterings and keep it out of drafts.

Jeannie7....there is a plant known as a 'Easter Cactus'...
the flowers,(I believe are red, pink, white, purple), and the segments are very different then a christmas cactus and and thanksgiving cactus....and it flowers for Easter...

And might I add, plastic pots are preferrable for all three of these types of plants. So they don't dry out quite that fast, they're jungle cacti, (they're not desert cacti needing clay pots to keep them dry).

To amplify Emerald's point, these are three different kinds of plants, distinguishable by how jagged or rounded the stem segments are, not by what month they bloom in (which is manipulated & forced by professional greenhouses).

Basically the Easter cacti are treated the same just the timing of witholding water, cool/cold exposure times and limiting light are different times of the year.
These 3 things are needed to create the buds.

If it is an Easter cacti March IS NOT a good time to re-pot. It might just be late in budding.

Yep, I have done quite a bit of research and I know what I have is definitely an Easter Cactus. I hope it is just late. Maybe it will form buds very soon. I hope anyways.

I have an Easter cactus also, it has always bloomed at Easter, but this year there are NO signs of buds. Very disappointing.

Easter Cactus flowers look completely different than Christmas/Thanksgiving Cactus.

Em, I've never seen one a white flowered EC, but it sounds pretty.. Walmart usually has EC on sale this time of year..They normally sell deep red, bright orange and true purple.
Come to think of it, EC isn't budding yet either.

Does anyone know if Easter/Christmas/Thanksgiving cactus should be potted in bark or soil? Toni

a fast-draining bark-based potting mix definitely.
I would avoid peat-moss entirely; which is to say, I would avoid any
bagged potting 'soil.'

Hi all, I don't know that EC comes in white I was just guessing its does because the others have a white one. I have not seen any EC in the stores yet, I asked at Lowe's and Wal-Mart and my local store but none yet I am hoping to get a couple this year...here is a pic of my christmas cactus it has one flower and I didn't loose it, I just moved this plant to my house from a friend 3 weeks ago...

There is a white EC, I have one budding up now. I just got my first open flower two days ago on one of my plants and another I just noticed the first tiny buds popping out yesterday so it's not to late to get buds this year.

They don't show up in the stores around here untill the week before Mothers Day so it's a while yet.

I still have some CC blooming as well, they seem to be going longer this year.

I wanted to UPDATE on my no budding problem, it looks like MAYBE There is tiny, tiny little bud on one of the segments! It does not even look like a flower just a little spec on the leaf! I will keep everyone update, and when I know for sure I will tell everyone! There just may be some hope for blooming on this older plant!

Here's a secret -- pay it less atention & don't watch it so closely & it's likely to bud up for ya. I've had this happen a number of times, don't know why it works like this -- but sometimes it really does.

ok, Another Update There are Severeal buds forming on my easter cactus, and it continues to form buds, I counted 12 so far!
