Here are some of my personal observations about the Easter cactus.

First of all, I love the flower. That bright color and the shape of the flowers provide a WOW factor!

As they mature, these plants develop two unfortunate characteristics. The cladodes (stem segments) grow hairs in between the joints.....which looks kind of icky, to me. Messy.

But the worst thing is their bad habit of shedding, suddenly, long stem sections. These long pieces will wilt first, looking really crappy for a time, and then they'll just fall off. If you're lucky, a segment will fall off while still in good shape and you can root it.

Never seen a CC (Schlumbergera x buckleyii) for sale. For some reason this year, EC's are at BBS's, readily available nationwide. Very cool!

By CC, do you mean TC (Schlumbergera truncata - that stores sell 'en masse' during the holidays?) Since they are sold with labels that say "Christmas cactus," it would be natural to call them that, and one really needs the botanical name for comparing these plants.

I've had an EC for about 2 years and it has bloomed numerous times, both while outside and inside, which I'm told isn't uncommon. OTOH, going by what I've read in anecdotes on these forums, since I just managed to get a cutting of CC via trade less than a year ago, would rarely bloom more than once per year. For that reason, I'd choose EC, but - why not get both and pot together if space is an issue? However, the link I've included below says TC and CC are supposed to bloom twice per year. Rare is a discussion about that happening, maybe because most peoples' plants need to come inside to much less light, IDK.

I couldn't possibly choose between TC and EC, you shouldn't either.

Although they are called cacti, know all 3 of these are epiphytic jungle plants, and really don't like bone-drying or baking in intense mid-day sun at all.

So... you need 3 plants...

Thanks for the link, but Purple, you're being an enabler. Some part of me wanted to hear that. If I listen to it and get the Easter Cactus, I'll explain to my husband that you said I should (jk, he's as much an enabler as you are. I don't ask him whether or not I should get stuff anymore b/c he'll just say yes). :)

Sorry about the confusion. I forgot that Thanksgiving Cactus and Christmas Cactus were different. I currently have a Thanksgiving Cactus plant. I may have an Easter Cactus too by the next time I post.

As a proud owner of all 3 of them I say get them all because there is nothing to compare. Only thing they have in common is the fact they are epiphytic jungle plants as was said in the previous post.

And my TC I would call a family heirloom. I don't have Mother plant anymore since we didn't have a place for the huge pot, but the Baby plant if growing and flowering for me.

Thining( IDK either) if growing inside both lighting and a steady tempature change of 20 - 40 degrees cooler by night would also have to occure for EC (and most epics) to flower Best of luck to you with your new Easter cacti

I grow Thanksgiving cactus myself, but I have avoided Easter Cactus because it seems like a lot of people have problems with the easter cactus dropping limbs as rhizo mentioned.

If that doesn't bother you though, why not grab one?

I have all three and enjoy them all.
The colors of the TC really catch my eye.
What I find is if they are kept in the spongy mix they are sold in
there's the problem of dropping limbs. Upon advise of someone
here a year or two ago is to get them out of that mix.
I now use a mix of fine orchid bark with a bit of perlite and a good
potting soil. So far it has worked well for me.
EC are especially easy to root. Just pick up that limb from
the floor and stick it back in the pot.

Your plants are all beautiful. I'm trying to sort out the differences - Schlumbergera I know is Christmas cactus, and I know Hatiora is the name of the Easter cactus - what about Thanksgiving cactus? I always thought it was an alternative name for Christmas cactus. I can't get that link above to work, purpleinopp.
