I've purchased Sans. from her before, and I too, was impressed with the size of the plants.

You'll love parva...it's very prolific.
I hung mine outdoors from an apple tree one year...it multiplied like CRAZY and bloomed abundantly after I brought it indoors that year.

We brought all the plants in last fall before the first freeze, and a few weeks later, after all the leaves fell from the trees....there was my S. parva still hanging in one of the trees.....deader'n a doornail!!

I haven't given up on it though...cut it back completely and am hoping for a chance that it may resprout from the roots.

I just wish she had some more rare sans. I really like the parva. I may show it if I can get the pup to look better.

Mentha...Back in the mid to late 90's, we found a local nursery that sold a good number of succulents.
On one wall hung a pretty and unusual plant. It followed us home.
Shape of leaves looked like hanging Aloes..I thought the plant was an Aloe, and treated it like one. Lots of sun, etc.
A few years ago I posted a pic..group of plants..someone said, 'I like your hanging Sans.' I asked, 'what Sans?' Turns out my hanging Aloe was a hanging Sans..lol..Would you consider it a rare Sans? Toni

Toni...it would simply be a stoliniferous species.
When grown in a pot they tend to be pendulous.

Most likely it's S. parva....does it look like mentha's S. parva at all?

Toni, how do you grow your aloes, I just bought some really nice aloes a few months ago all from the same source and all of them turned to mush as if they had some sort of virus or some such. They just started ooosing liquid & collapsed.

It's a Sans,. that grows in a manner reminiscent of Spider plants (Chlorophytum) babies. Suspended babies in mid-air hanging down just like Spider babies. The one I had was from one which had been collected in the wild in Mozambique (in Africa). It was VERY cool!

I sure hope so, I'd like a different sans to show this summer than the normal box store varieties. I read where parva does well in wooden orchid baskets, hmmm.... My sansevieria cylindrica is sending out blooms stalks everywhere! It sure is a nice plant, way more than I'm used to paying for something that's not an epiphyllum or hoya. I'm hoping on making it to Grigsby's & Rainbow Gardens while down in San Diego. At the last C&SS meeting there was a huge patens from Grigsby's. I bought $20 worth of raffle tickets in hopes of getting it, I did get a few leaves off of it though, and promise of a pup next meeting. I didn't get anything but a few aeoneum cuttings in the plant exchange ugh! I sure hope I can keep these sans alive, I've only really gotten into them in December. I've kept a look, don't touch attitude prior to that.

Mentha, if you don't have this Sans, let me know and I'll send you some babies..I removed a few sections to root. If you're interested let me know.

Alsos need more sun than Sans, a lot more. Three larger and one small Aloe bloomed this winter. I snapped a pic as flowers were fading..Gotta luv Sux..lol..

Mentha, most Aloes are babies, the variegated is several yrs old.

I also added a plant my brother has..I think it's a succulent, but don't know for sure. When small it stands erect, when older it's a vine. I took a cutting from his plant in 1994..my cutting is next to his plant..The mom plant is over 30 yrs old! There's history behind this plant, too. Oh, it's edges are jagged..Toni

WOW Toni! That is the most beautiful Sans I've ever seen! I would love to have a cutting or two, how about a pup with a pup attached, a chain? lol I'm drooling just thinking about it. I don't know what I have that would interest you, I have plenty of epies & hoyas ;) Do you mind if I post it on another forum for ID? Have you tried posting it on the Sans forum? I'm sure Norma would know it. That last plant is amazing, I wonder if anyone can ID it, I'm sure Mr Subj could.

Sadly, I just got back inside from doing surgery on two of my last three aloes, apparantly they had some sort of fungus which causes collapse. I am hoping my KG "Pink Blush" makes it, I paid an aweful lot for it. I sure hope Sans can't get it, since I've used the same soil for the sans as I did the aloes.

I have a problem with plants being sent Monday and not getting here by the weekend. Do you have a close up of the Sans? I know they'll ask for it. Let me know if you want something I have plenty of white epi cuttings which broke off of my monster plant when I brought it in, I also have a yellow epi & a couple other Rhipsalis of interest. email me with your addy so I can send postage at least. Are your white Epi leaves, white?
The PO here doesn't deliver on wkends, which is one reason I worry about sending a plant on Fri. And with our crazy temps, one day 60F, the next 40F, I fear it'll freeze..It's up to you though.

Nan, the un-ID'd plant's leaves grow in white. They remain white until 1' tall..offshoots are white too..
My brothers plant, the mom of my cutting, is absolutely gorgeous! The plant came from Poland..this is why we named it the Polish Plant..lol..

Mentha, after looking at the site, my Sans is probably a Ballyi. The only difference is, the one you posted has much larger sections..

The polish plant is really very intriguing....absolutely 'funky-cool' how those new leaves emerge white!
I'm gonna peruse a couple of books when I get a chance and try to help you figure out what it could be!

The photo of your brother's plant was too dark too really see...do you have another photo of it? Is his in a hanging pot? (Sorry, couldn't tell for sure from the photo.)

Mentha...you'll be showing a nice pot-full of S. parva with stolons and plantlets before you know it!
It grows similar to the one Toni pictured (stoloniferous)...but Toni's has more 'patterning' to the leaves.
The plantlets quickly send out their own little 'tap roots' that kind of add personality to the plant.
(I probably used the wrong terminology there, but you get the picture.)

Parva was an easy bloomer for me. Only the second of many Sans I own that has ever bloomed in my care.

Nan, if you can find a name for the Polish Plant, I'd appreciate it. My brother has a total of 3 plants, two given to him from his MIL, and a Spider from me.
When I told him I couldn't get an ID on his plant, he was most happy..lol..I told him, (shh, to make him feel good) he had one rare plant. lol.
I dont have another pic, but I'll ask him to snap one, and turn on the light!
When my brother's MIL had the mom, it got NO light. It sat in a kitchen corner, (no window) the kitchen being the second room from an enclosed porch..the enclosed porch faces east..lol..in other words, the plant was approximately 20' from an east window.

I thought, Agave, because it has jagged edges. It doesn't like direct sun. It burns. It also needs a lot more water than most succulents. Plus, it's a vine. When young, it stands erect, but as it matures, it vines out.

It'd be much larger, but in the last 15 yrs, I'd given away many cuttings. Oh, that's another thing, it's semi-fast-growing. Think I've given adequate description? It's a start anyway..lol..thanks, Nan....Toni

Awww pretty 'tiels, I had a pair Darla & Alfalfa, then there was Stymie & Bu'wheat. I miss my 'tiels. My daughter has a pair of Budgies named Para & Keet, noisy little buggers lol. I just have some ringneck doves. The wild mourning doves coo to them.

I'm too new to Sans to give it a positive ID, but I do know someone at the C&SS who may be able to ID it on sight. Next meeting is April 19th. I meant the Epi had white flowers, or at least I think that is the color since I've not seen it bloom, but it has tons of buds, a few going to bloom within the week. I have a redish orange which looks like a star. & a yellow with a white throat.

My fav, shhh!, is Mystic..he's (white-face Pied.) Mystic whistles Andy Griffith and Jingle Bells, well he tries for JB's, but comes out gibberish. Though we hear him loud and clear..lol..makes me upset/Mystic is going to be 12 yrs. Had him since, a month sooner, an egg.
His son, Sparkle, (white-face) learned AG theme song out of jealousy..lol..once Mystic starts singing, Sparkle joins in..he tries competing with dad. Most of the time I laugh or join in, but when I 'just wake' and two male tiels are exorcising their lungs in my ears, I get a headache. lol..The females, Baby (Mystic's wife/white-face pearl) and Moonbeam, (albino) Moonbeam is Mystic and Baby's daughter, are quiet, sit back and listen to their husband/brother screech. lol..

Mentha, what happened to your tiels? Do you know their types? Colors? I hope it's a tale with a happy ending; besides plants, pets are the greatest.

Are doves allowed out of their cages? Ringnecks are very pretty. I bet they coo to mourning doves..Cooo coooo..We have doves here. Last spring, a pair built a nest on our lower roof..Every morning, bright and early, about 4am, they coo'd into our bedroom. But their coo'ing is a soothing sound, you know? Cardinals and Blue Jays are another thing..they are loud..Jays are vicious when they think someone is trying to disturb their nests.
Our cat, Halloween, would sit out front with us. One afternoon, a male Jay came swooping down, hitting Halloween on the head..Not once, but several times..With each swoop came a loud, warning whistle. This happened three days in a row..Poor Halloween didn't know what to do. He looked at me with that innocent yet sly, 'I didn't do anything.' gaze. lol.

Mentha, when do you want me to send the Sans? Also, how do I wrap them? They don't need tissue to keep moist, and I fear plastic..they might rot, especially if it's cold.

I had my 'Tiels when I was in high school, they have long been gone. I had wf pieds & cinnamon pieds. My doves are all differnt colors, not a wild type in the bunch ;) 22 of them, three are white silkies. I am hoping the silkies breed with the colors this year.

To pack a Sans. make sure it's dry (stop watering now), don't know when you plan to send it, but best way to ship a Sans. is just dry, no tissue, no plastic (G_d forbid, that'd be rot city).

Just wrap it DRY in newsprint. As long as it's dry it can maintain a long while as an unrooted cutting, just bare or rolled up in newsprint. I've received plenty of Sans. like this, never had a problem.

Toni...about the 'Polish plant'....is the stem that's showing woody & trunk-like or is it somewhat 'fleshy'?

IMHO you're safe to send the sans wrapped as Karen suggests...it can easily withstand the temps in your extended forecast.
The temps inside the box are always warmer, and only a prolonged period of temps well below freezing would have a negative affect.

I've both sent and received many plants in that temperature range with no harm at all

It's Epipremnum aureum "NÂJoy" I've had it for about a month & a half now and only a few brown spots on the leaves, unlike a regular pothos that looses whole leaves. I've only seen it sold at two different places, HD & a local nursery. So far it seems to be easier than normal Epipremnums.

Do you know anything about rooting Sans leaves? I have some patens leaves which I would like to start rooting, they have been drying for two weeks now. I assume it's about time I could put them in some soil to root.

Nan, the Polish Plant has woody stems. Offshoots grow off the wood. (like epi) When I took a cutting from the original plant, it was a detached piece of plant. Believe me, I had doubts it'd root. Any luck finding info? It'd be nice knowing if it was succulent or trop. So, for the time being, it's known as the Polish Plant, shipped from Europe. lol.

Mentha, if you think it's safe to send Sans today, I'll get it ready. My son will go to the PO. It's 44F degrees now but they're predicting night temps between 29-31F. Ck WC. Wish I saved a heat pack..lol..Some are good up to 60 hours.
I recently sent for 'free' boxes at USPS. They haven't yet arrived..figures..so, the box Sans cuttings will be shipped in is rather large..lol..Cuttings will do fine. I'll slip them in a brown paper bag, then fill with newspaper.

Remember the Ficus Coco chewed? I didn't have the heart to toss..Its remaining trunk stood about 3". Two fresh leaves sprouted..think there's hope? Wonder how it'll grow. Which direction/s..lol.

Mentha...I've only been successful rooting Sans *leaves* (offsets are so much easier!) once or twice...they tend to rot before they root!
I have a S. manolin that had lost a leaf in transit.
I stuck it in a pot of gritty mixed 'trash' soil in the back room at work (about 2 feet from a very large, bright west-facing window) and very very rarely water it. When I do I give it, literally, just a splash near the edge of the pot and never near the leaf itself.
It hasn't sprouted any new growth, but I do believe it has rooted.
I recall seeing Norma saying to keep the soil DRY, DRY, DRY, and that's essentially what I've done with this one.

I also remember J.Harris saying never to *water* succulents that you're trying to root, to just 'mist around the cutting/leaf' when very dry. That has worked quite often in the past with many different succulents.
You want those forming roots to have to 'search' for water.

I've also read that sand works well for propagating Sans leaves, along with bottom heat.

Toni...no chance to look yet...working two jobs...got a couple of ideas...will keep looking!

I often start Sans plants from leaves, it does take a RATHER long time but it does work. It's true that the trick is not to water them; also they'll manage w/ any old mix, sometimes the crappier the better. Sans are one of the few families of plants w/ whom I recycle mix, they just don't care as long as it's fast draining.

I also learned w/ JH that one can leave Sans (like Aloes & Jades) upright in clay pots to dry out or callous over prior to potting them up.

I even learned from Jon_D that one can root Sans in pure pumice as well, will just need to be watered once in a great while.

Toni, Great Sans, the first looks a lot like my masons congo but taller!
I think your Polish Plant may be a pandanus, srew pine. Looks a lot like what we called variegated screwpine when I lived in FL. But you know how common names are.

When you lived in Fl, did you have a viney Pandanus?

Got this guy at Home Depot, on the coldest night of Jan, 1999..-4F..The casher refused to give me a bag. I was so annoyed, I grabbed a handful, gave her the LOOK, and intentinally stood in line until Pandanus was wrapped. Cannot say, here on GW, what I muttered, loud enough for her to hear, but it's something we wouldn't want our children or birds repeating. lol.

There were only 2 Pandanus left..That was the first and last time our HD had them available. Which is why, if one is wondering, the reason I bought a plant on such a cold, dark night.

You know, Toni, I was kind of thinking along the lines of Pandanus/Dracaena/Yucca....as there are many different cultivars, and depending on it's lighting...they sometimes do get a few twists/turns and dips in the trunks.

I say this because I have a plant that was grown from a cutting from a plant that my mother had.
I remember we gave this to her for Mother's Day in the late seventies.
My Dad gave me a cutting of the plant in the eighties.
This cutting was really large, and had a very noticeable almost 'S' shaped curve in the trunk.
I had set it outdoors that summer, and it grew like crazy, but grew totally upright from that point on (I think it was simply because I had given it better lighting. (They had moved it to the basement at one point, and it sat down there for a few years with relatively low light.)

I have never been able to ID that plant! It's got to be either a Yucca, Dracaena or Pandanus, though the edges aren't exactly what I'd call 'sharp' or 'jagged'....so I'm leaning toward one of the more obscure Yuccas or Dracaenas. (If only it would bloom!)

Though I certainly can't narrow it down, I think yours might be one of the more 'osbcure' species of one of those 3, and since you stated it has 'jagged edges', I think Charles might be onto something with his guess at Pandanus.

The big 'stumper', though, is those white leaves that mature to green! At first I thought maybe the new leaves of your brother's plant were being burnt either by sun or cold, but you stated that they mature to green...and if so, they obviously didn't suffer any kind of burn.

Hi Nan. Do you still have the plant with the S trunk? I'd love seeing it. Was it upright, vine? Tropical, succulent? You never figured out what it was? Is the original plant around?

Nan, not only the white leaves, but the fact it grows, viney, after it grows a certain height. Mine is semi-viney, my brothers is staked, otherwise it'd tip over. His is close to 5' tall.
Wish I could take a closeup, but one new shoot, stands 3-7", 10 leaves..the top 4 are white, remaining 6 green. Weird, huh?

The Pandanus in Fl were not vines, but those that had the lighter/white tops were definitely weaker growers than the solid greens. some seemed to sprawl and make clumps instead of the upright growth of the green Screwpine Trees. You might be able to contact someone at Fairchild Tropical Gardens in Coral Gables Fl. One of my favorite gardens on this earth!
I'm still leaning to Pandanus.
I've had the same experience w/ the home depot gang, at the Brooklyn one when it first opened. Didn't want to give bags for an orchid. I must have used the same type of wording at the cashier, I remember getting a slap in the back of the head from my friend!!!!

Toni: I do still have the plant, BUT...it has fallen off the deck several times:( and the cool 'S' shaped trunk thus broke...more than once and in more than one place!
(We lived on a very windy ridgetop before we bought our current home) AND...the poor thing has been grossly neglected through the years.

I can make a mental note to take a photo.
(I take lots of photos, but don't post a lot, as I still use a WIN98 computer on dial-up and it takes SOOOOOO long for the photos to upload!)

Charles found the right word when he wrote 'sprawl'...because in the case of my plant from my parents...I couldn't really describe it as 'vining' because of that trunk.
(That's kind of why I asked you if the stem was 'trunk-like' or otherwise.)

I think that's an adept description of what your plant is doing....'sprawling', rather than 'vining'.
If your plant(or your brother's plant) were growing in-ground, it would, indeed, 'make clumps' as it 'sprawled', as Charles describes.

Charles....when you say some of the 'Screwpines' had lighter/white tops...do you mean that when new growth protruded it was nearly white, as Toni's plant/her brother's plant is?
When I think of a variegated Pandanus I think of a 'pattern' of variegation on the leaves, like some Dracaenas...but I have never actually seen a variegated Pandanus as you have.

I really think Charles is on the right track, Toni, and it would be worth researching variegated Pandanus...you might have a match!

I'm definitely using the word variegated wrong here. The leaves were not variegated but as with Tonis plant they start out white to nearly white and then turn green. Sorry for the confusion. Another difference that I do remember, on the all green pandanus the leaves kind of spiraled up the trunk, the variety that I remember with the white top did not appear to spiral but because of the shrub like effect there really was not trunk per-se to see that on.
