Fertilizing Violet babies
Comments (1)Toni, The usual practice is to use a balanced fertilizer at all growing stages. I don't show plants but I understand that those who show use a blossom booster to promote heavy bloom just before a show. It's my understanding that using it always will tend to cause a crown die-off. As far as promoting leaves, while we all want blooms, they are not vital to a violet's continued life and growth. Leaves are. They are the food factories without which we have no blooms. Healthy, well fed leaves will give us great blooms, not vice-versa. No leaves, no plant. I understand that Jolly Jubilee is a difficult bloomer. I just bought one and I can understand why. There's very little chlorophyll in those leaves. I am going to try and green mine up a bit to see if it helps with blooming. I treat my minis the same as my standards as far as care and fertilizing. I do watch them a little more closely as to watering. In my experience, the smaller the plant, the smaller and more delicate the root system and the more susceptible to rot and/or dessication. If there's an age and/or size violets must obtain to bloom, I've never figured it out. Much depends on growing conditions, (better conditions promote faster, more robust growth), and the variety, (some varieties are go-getters, some are not). Plants bloom when the root system and top growth is strong and viable enough to take on the stress of blooming. The rule of thumb is six months from leaf-set to bloom but again, many things influence this. Linda...See Morebest organic fertilizing formula for Meyer lemon trees?
Comments (1)I have used Dr Earth brand and CitrusTone brand fertilizers available at my local nurseries before. Don't know if they are the best or not. They are organic. And not cheap. But, I grow less than a dozen trees so I do not use too much of it. I am not sure how many trees you are growing - because, if it is a lot, there is an organic growing forum on gardenweb, where some one would be able to tell you how to formulate organic citrus fertilizer cheaply by combining ingredients easily available....See MoreSeedlings - Formula for fertilizing?
Comments (4)I would recommend using a water soluble, balanced fertilizer. Miracle-Gro or Peters for example, 10-10-10 or 30-30-30 or what ever as long as the numbers (NPK ratio) are about the same. Dilute it 1/4 to 1/2 recommended strength and water the seedlings with it either every time or every other time. Depending on how much light they are getting and the temperature they are growing in. As long as their color looks good, they are not being over-fertilized. Ed...See MoreFertilizer for small baby plantlets
Comments (15)They should be growing like weeds with these lights. What about watering? With bottom watering it is easy to overwater and underwater - both is not good. I am thinking you are due to a home visit from some expert. Another pair of eyes can be helpful. To check your light level - find some APP for you cell phone that measures the luxes or foot candles. Lightmeter is the code word. It uses your built in photocamera sensors - and though it is not as precise a $300 gadget professionals use - it will give us a ball park. Most of these APPs are either free or very inexpensive. Right now - these young plants either in suspended animation - or dying out. Next things - minimum and maximum temperatures - the cheapest garden thermometer is in Walmart - something like $9.95 - it will show ups and downs in a last 24 hours. Water. Do you have issues with water - can it be too alkaline or high on dissolved solids? This info is usually available through the local water district - you can call them. Presence of chlorine or chloramine in water - they shoud tell you. Thing is - they do not do anything since last May - you either figure out what is serously wrong - or just put them out of their misery. You are paying electric bills, buying fertilizer, wasting your time - and they do not do squat. Next try - if you take one tray, use your best fertilizer, make sure that it is under the good light, use store bought water and a Miracle grow fertilizer, so far it is your best one, and make sure that your watering is just so - no sogging and no crisping - an I do not think you need a dome for it - they are rooted already. If you will see that this tray will start growing better - it is a start....See Moretanyalee
