Wedding gift plant idea - pairing plants?

I'd like to give my friends a pair of plants that will grow together.

I'm attending their very unconventional wedding on Saturday and would like to give them a cool gift that symbolizes their union and future growth as a couple.

Does anyone have any affordable ideas?

When my girlfriend moved into my apartment a good friend of ours gave us this orchid which is actually two phaleonopsis in one pot. I always thought of it as symbolizing us. Something like that might be cool. Or maybe two bulbs growing in one pot? How about a heart leaf ivy?

Lovely sentiment. I like the idea of two mingling plants, but it might be hard to keep them living together forever. What if one plant dies? The symbolism would be awful.

A dear friend of my parents gave us a beautiful, ordinary philodendron when we married - forty years ago! - and it is still thriving! I've cut it up, repotted it, given parts of it away a dozen times over the years, and it is still beautiful. And Huge! Over the years I've gone through many houseplants, (one husband) but I'm ridiculously sentimental about that one. Go for longevity for your friends.

Toni: Yeah, I worry a lot when repotting. I've got a lot of daylilies and other plants in a container garden outside and I've traumatized a few by unintentionally "rough repotting". I'm a newbie to houseplants, but not a total newbie for outside plants! :) Yeah. I keep my plants there, two kitchen islands stuck together. It's the only place in my house out of reach of the cat (who will eat everything). Lighting is fine. I've got a big kitchen window (east) that lights up the area for most of the morning/early afternoon, plus some extra light from a dining room window. My camera just makes everything look dark. I don't know why the flash makes things look dark! My husband knows the right settings, but I don't! I've thought about scooting the succulents over to the window if I can figure out a way to block the area from the cat, but so far they seem to be doing well where they are. The alpenglow / vera higgins / graptosedum looks much healthier already than it did when I bought it (50 cent clearance plant--it didn't have any green to it. It was completely gray, hence the gray pot). I accidentally broke one jade leaf when I was checking the soil, but other than that, no jade issues so far. Here are the dark closeups! :)

Any EASY ideas for using my roses etc. in wedding gift?

Perhaps you could clip roses for the bouquet and rosebuds for boutonnieres for the groom and the father of the bride from one of your rosebushes and then transplant the bush to the couple's new home. If the couple is going to be living in an apartment, or will be moving frequently, use a miniature rosebush that can live in a container. Clip roses from one rosebush for the bouquet (perhaps in white), and the rosebud for the groom's boutonniere from another (perhaps red). Transplant the bushes on either side of their doorstep. If you use roses from climbing roses, you could plant one on either side of an arched trellis at their home and have them grow together across it. Dry the petals of your best scented roses, sew inside a sachet-sized silk pillow, and store with your daughter's wedding gown. Make an album with a plasticine envelope containing pressed, dried petals from each of the flowers used in your daughter's wedding. Head the page with a quote about the flower, or the meaning of the flower. YOu can print these out in very pretty fonts on your computer, cut "mats" of colored cardstock, and put them under the clear covers of each page. You can also get such quotations printed on cards at bookstores. Also on the page put a picture of either just the bride, or the bride and groom together that epitomizes the quotation. Ray

The pillow is beautiful. Annie's suggestion about an eye pillow is also great. Lots of people like to use one during final relaxation. It sounds like you have a real friend who can be honest with you about not liking jewelry. When I first started dating my now husband, he gave me a necklace. I don't like to wear jewelry and anything around my neck, no matter how light, makes me feel like I'm strangling. Since we were not yet exclusive, i told him nicely to give the necklace to someone else. The next time I saw him, he had gotten the necklace made into a bracelet. I wore it in front of him until it (thankfully) broke. He had always dated women who liked jewelry and he wanted to give me gifts. As my birthday approached, he talked about taking me bracelet shopping and I knew he was thinking about something expensive. You should have seen his face when I told him that what I really wanted was a crown! And that's how I got some expensive, needed dentistry for my birthday.

My oldest plants of 30 years-sansevieria, jade, pony tail palm and a christmas cactus.

I received a corn plant as a wedding present and it lived and lived but did not thrive. I felt sad when I finally tossed it.I think a plant that you can keep dividing is the best choice. Obviously, I have mastered the care of my oldest plants.

For those that do not have a green thumb, the pot would be long lasting. I wonder if a pair of hoya's would work or how about a couple of cacti. I did receive a wicker basket that had spots for 2 pots once.
