What's New? I've been away from plants 9 years

After working with indoor (and outdoor) plants for over twenty years I got out of horticulture and now 9 years later am looking to get back in. I'm up to date with outdoor plants as I've been rabidly gardening and buying/shopping outdoor plants the entire time but my house is not good for indoor plants and I have not kept up with them at all.

So, what is new? The last new plant I can think of is the ZZ Plant and even they I'm not too familiar with.

Mehitabel - The good side of things is that I've realized what a ridiculous waste of money so many things are. Starbucks? No way! 4 tall lattes = a new orchid. I'd rather take the orchid, thanks. Q - you clearly are much more well behaved than I am. You should try the sedirea though - no need for a tank, and if it can survive in the cold, dry, sun-less canadian winter, I'm sure it'll do fine for you. MrB - Hopefully I don't come across as being presumptuous for getting these kinda hard to grow plants - honestly, I do realize how much I need to learn! :) Actually, some of the things I ordered were not listed on the oakhill website; I e-mailed Greg and he sent me a list of things. That was pretty cool of him to do. Still searching for that distincta/splendida though Carol - those ghosts are really cute but weird...there are several of them mounted on one stick...seems like they were recently mounted. I've popped them into the tank and will be keeping a close eye on them. If they do well in the next few weeks I'll post an update. Let me know if you're interested in trying one or two :) Kev - you terrible enabler. Yes, I definitely did eye the dends. That's for my next order :-) And speeding across the great lakes on a boat? Puh-leeeze...that's soo crude - I'm much more of a jumping-from-a-plane-with-parachute-orchids-in-tow-in-the-dead-of-night kinda guy. PS - my habenaria woke up! what should I do with it? Sorry I didn't get back to you, I have been working on my roses. I usually feed them whenever I water them. Since they don't have soil, they need the nutriments. I never clean the clay balls and you don't have to change the water because you are filling the pot and only about 1 inch of water stays on the bottom. This filters up and waters and feeds the plants as needed. Since the containers are see-through, I just put more water in when the reservoir starts going down. Some people do flush with plain water occasionally but I haven't found that necessary. It is interesting that the roots grow right into the water and it doesn't faze them. I do not like the round clay pellets but I can't mention where I go because they get upset here so if you are interested I can email you the site. You do not have to wait for the plant to be rootbound either. Mine are usually blooming within a month or two. Here is a link that might be useful:

Thanks for sharing your experience. It's so great to hear from others who have gone through the process. We are building a house out in the country, as well. We are planning on doing the back up generator (we are in wyoming) so it's nice to hear that it is worth the extra cost. We are not putting in a basement (the water table is too high on our property) but I do have some concerns about my laundry/mudroom. I don't know the dimensions but we ended up stealing space from that area to make our master bath even larger. In the end we are doing a stackable washer and dryer but that will leave me room for a big closet for coats, as well as, a smaller closet with a doggie door for the cat boxes. We will also have room for a bench/cubbie unit. I've worried that I will hate the stackable washer and dryer (I'm short and with 3 small kids they will be used alot) but I thought I'd appreciate the extra storage. The mud is ridiculous here but we've been living in a mobile home on our property for a year while we built so I'm hoping that just the extra space (3 kids, 3 cats, 3 dogs in less than 1100 square feet now) will help me look past the mud that will be inevitable for a long time. We are afraid to pave our road because my hubby worries he will just tear it up snowplowing with his tractor in the winter. And it's true that gravel is cheap (relatively) and can make a big difference. We are doing a playroom in the bonus space above the garage but otherwise our house is just one level - thank you so much for sharing.

Sweet luv let me tell you the most important thing about your situation. You are sinning against God for being with a Married man only consequential things are going to occur to you and he still is going to be married to his wife but your spirit is going to be ruined. Take it from me I was in the same situation as you exact but for 16 years. Everything was so good and every year he was going to divorce his wife and every year it was an excuse. Don't fall for it. I made triple the amount as he did, but 10 years later my sin caught up with me. I lost my income, lost my great career he got nastier and blamed me. He was very verbal abusive then turned physical when he knew his cash cow was living. Get out while you can it will only get worse. I was with him for 16 years you only done 8 I know what the love feels like but it's only one way. Jesus loves you more go after his love. Ever since I left him and got back with the lord my life has been restored. Don't wait to got humble you from your sin and take everything from you. Please trust me it's going to get way way way way worse. Please take it from someone with experience in the truth of what your going through. God Bless you and I hope you do the right thing. Kick him to the curb.

ZZ = Zamnioculcas zamifolia, a plant in the Aroid family commonly used as an indoor houseplant.

I just got my first Zamioculcas zamiifolia today. Here is a photo of it after I transplanted it. It was busting out of the plastic pot it was in.

People seem to be talking a lot about new Aglaonemas.

BBS's have radically expanded their house plant selections beyond the very basics, which has been quite a boon for people out in the boonies. Similarly, it also seems like the wholesalers are making efforts to make a much wider variety of plants available to a much wider audience. Like new varieties of old favorites like Pothos and Sans, and other plants that probably would already be old standbys but just haven't been available as house plants before.

Someone has to trek through the wilderness of Ecuador or Malaysia or Borneo to gather these things, then propagate successfully for years to make something new publicly available, even if the plant was growing there for centuries. Seems like someone has been working on that for a while and the results are starting to show up in droves. Or maybe it's just as simple as the BBS's realizing people want more than Pothos and Sans. What do you people think from your view of things?

If you browse Exotic Angel or Costa Farms, I think most people will see a lot of plants you've never seen before, so many that were never in any of the famous house plant books.

I think mini/fairy gardens will end up being this decade's "macrame hangers" but it's hard to tell if it's just my new interest, causing me to notice every instance, or if it really is suddenly much more prolific.

These darn "self-watering pots" are everywhere. Beware!

Pink and red Aglaonemas are certainly new. I have not seen any of them locally though I have not been actively shopping for indoor plants I do for outdoor and they are often found at the same places.

I find the houseplant selection available in Portland OR to be significantly lower than that in Phoenix AZ where I used to live. I'm assuming the ease of outdoor gardening and very low indoor light levels is the reason. Even when I was working in horticulture and buying houseplants for retail sales, I could not find many plants I had grown for years in Phoenix. Many of the wholesale plants here are coming from the same growers in British Columbia except for big plants all trucked from Florida which often do not survive the transition to our low light levels. Clouds for nine months of the year do not great conditions make for houseplants...
