Sweet Treat Pluerry, plum x cherry, can order now for 2013

This interspecific hybrid is available for order on DWN Soft program. I just ordered one from Bay Laurel Nursery for 2013 season.

You might want to order now because they will likely be gone quickly in the fall. Also an order now might cause DWN to bud more this summer.

Sounds fascinating, but personally I've never tried any of their pluots, apriums, etc., because I just don't know if they will do well in Michigan. A local nursery has some of them this year, but are $90 each. I might try some later in the season if they clearance them out cheaper.

Thanks for the tip fruitnut. I expect this one may do OK for me since the Sprite/Delight cherry-plums work well here. Sprite/Delight are crosses of plum and some other kind of cherry, not sweet cherry, so they are not pluerries.

Dennis, along with Sprite my Flavor Grenade seems very reliable here. I'm not Michigan but am a lot more like Michigan than California.

Might be a plan, Fruitnut. I'll check around. Maybe my local nursery can order a bundle if I can sell them on a variety. They may know some farmer's market growers who might like to trial a variety. Last year they got a "stray" in a bundle of Pluots and I bought it after it leafed out and it became obvious that it was bundled with a different variety. Still had the rootstock tag. Think it's Splash, but we'll see. To me, that's gambling. Now that we're all lusting after Flavor Treat thanks to Fruitnut, I noticed that Dave Wilson has a picture of Flavor Treat at their site, but it's not in their list of either commercial or home varieties. Strange. And Patty, now is the time when you start planting in the yards of friends and neighbors. I'm considering that with a couple of plums from which I want budwood. They should pollenize my trees from across the street, too. I bought a Flavor Grenade for one friend this year, and hope to get another friend a Flavor King. You have to assess how "into" gardening they are and pick easy or more challenging varieties depending on their expected level of care. And maybe drop by for dormant spraying and painting trunks every year. I think this is also a good idea with vegetable and melon seeds. Give a gardener you know seeds of premium varieties in return for a little produce, or buy seed for a local nursery to grow out, with an agreement that they'll call you when plants are ready.

Fruitnut, The rest of the branches are sending out leaf buds. They are just delayed a little bit. It didn't abort any flower buds. I had to thin down from about 100 fruitlets to 10-15. Based on what I have seen on mine I don't think it is lack of chill. My winter is so warm that most trees suffer from lack of chill to some degree. Pluots that are rated 400 hours do well for me with half of that. Very productive, eventually leafing out normally. The pluerry is behaving like my pluots that receive lack of chill. Apricots and cherries are another story. My dapple dandy is a perfect example. It is rated at 4-500 hours but usually gets about half of that. It starts by leafing out and blooming sporadically in the spring. Very interesting reading. Thought I'd chime in on cherries now that spring is starting to arrive. I have a Black Gold cherry which appears to have now survived 2 winters. The buds were starting to swell this last weekend when I looked at it, same as the pie cherries. Sunday night the weekend before, the temp. reading overnight was 4. The year before last when I planted it, I finally realized I wasn't giving it enough water until Aug. and when I increased the water, it started to grow instead of having just the leaves that emerged in the spring with no growth. That fall, it didn't go dormant until cold temps in Nov. finally froze the leaves down. We only got down to about -20 that winter. I was worried last spring that it hadn't made it, and the new growth in Aug. didn't, but buds came out all over the stem and grew well last year (much more water all summer). In mid Sept. I stopped all water so it would dry down and the leaves turned colors and dropped in Mid. Oct. along with the pie cherries. This winter we got down to about -25, but we also didn't have warm spells like we have had so often the last few years. In fact, this spring it seems like spring still hasn't arrived. One nice day, then back to the 40's and 50's lately (75 today, supposed to be 50 tomorrow, maybe back close to 60 by next week). I get almost no natural rainfall, so controlling soil moisture is easy as long as I have a way water it. Also, the only protection it gets otherwise is a snow fence wrapped around it to try to discourage the deer.

Idahomeboy, I too started on the container forum. But I found this forum substantially more helpful for growing fruits in pots. I found that the recipes for the "gritty mix" and the "5-1-1" mix were way too dry for my purposes. And the gritty mix is extremely heavy. (It is based on rocks, after all.) I use a wetter, but well draining soil mix and I still must water every day. Although he also grows in ground, fruitnut has shared a wealth of information on growing fruits in pots. Try searching this forum for his posts. There's a lot of great info here. I'm just a beginner. I'm in ohio, zone 5. In pots, I grow or have grown in pots strawberries, mulberries, gooseberries, sweet cherries, blueberries, and blackberries. I haven't harvested any plums or boysenberries yet, but I'm working on those too. Everything I've needed to know to grow those fruits in pots I learned here on this forum. So you're in the right place. Good luck

Either way an awful name IMO. I won't be using it. Will probably look like a plum so that will do.

There isn't as much info on this tree/fruit as one would normally expect. According to DWN's Facebook page it is on Myro 29C. Not sure of harvest time, size of fruit, chill hours, etc. Guesses can be made, looks to be plum-sized from pictures, but hard to say for sure. Unless it is very early or very late, it will be hard to shoehorn it into my lot at this point.

Looks like it ripens around end of July through August, apparently hangs on the tree very well, about 2 months (if you can keep the birds away). So, a little later but not super late. I am wondering what the chill hours were where it was tested. I'm not super low chill hours where I am - I actually get a fair amount of temps from 42 to 45 through the winter at night - so I'm probably 400 to 500 ch, based on the two weather stations accumulated chill hours (MiraMar and Escondido). I do need to find a weather station device that counts my chill hours, if anyone can give me a suggestion??

With a new fruit tree a nebulous designation such as "low chill" works well enough for me. If someone has success with it locally, so much the better. Precision with regard to chill hours would be more informational than applicable. Too much emphasis will have you drilling down on the method of measurement, etc. And fails to account for micro-climates and other variables. It kind of becomes a never ending discussion that runs in a loop. Better to spend one's time eating tasty fruit. :)

I wish I saw this thread earlier. ;-(

I just got my Bay Laurel catalog in the mail and was intrigued by the Sweet Treat Pluerry so I went onto their website only to find that they are sold out for 2013. :-(

I was able to place an order through Sanhedrin so hopefully they'll means they have some (or will be getting some). ;-)
