Don't you know that most nursery folks in California think that there are only two types of persimmons? The Hachiya and Fuyu. So it could be that what you got was not actually Fuyu, perhaps something mislabeled as such. To this very day, you can still buy persimmons in California that has tag which says Fuyu (Jiro) Persimmon, and horrors, they imply it to be the same when the Fuyu and Jiro are two very distinct cultivars!!! Look at your tags Californians! Also heard in some CRFG members that the confusion has permeated the industry that even some of the reputable nurseries that are supposed to sell Fuyu actually came from still another non-astringent cultivar. So we are not really sure about the exact cultivar. At least I applaud DWN for having recognized and sell several cultivars of persimmons. I have collected 43 cultivars of persimmons so far, and will try to test for their differences and performance her in my yard. I am suspecting that two of my original trees bought were also mislabeled but I have something more credible to compare them to. Anyway Bejay, either a mislabeled cultivar or what you may have might be a classic manganese deficiency problem. You can get Mn supplements if you fertilize with cirus fertilizer with minors, surely look for minors that has Mn, Fe, and Zn which usually are the most common types. Fertilize with this citrus fertilizer now. There are two types of citrus fertilizer formulation, one has a higher value of N which is intended for growing, the other one has a lower value of N, and is intended just before blooming for citruses. So apply the same way next year, just before the last major rains in the season, which is about February. I the rains didn't come, then hose them down to the root zone. Hopefully this should eliminate your Mn problem. Another approach is to buy STEM or other formulations that contains Mn such as those for tomato bloom fertilizer from GreenAll.

Hi Tony, Beautiful pics. I see your photo of Snowqueen nectarine. Can I safely assume you grew that fruit & did not buy it at the grocery? Seems like a silly question, but... most reports I've seen say that Snowqueen is one the most highly-rated nects for flavor, but is NOT cold hardy beyond Zone-7, which is why I have not attempted growing it on my vacation property in Zone-6b. Are you growing Snowqueen in the ground in Zone-5A Nebraska? Did it survive this past winter? If you are successfully fruiting Snowqueen in Zone-5A, then all bets are off! How old is the tree? From where did you obtain it? Was the fruit richly flavored? Thanks in advance for whatever information you can share. Cheers, -Matt

At the risk of muddying the waters even more, following is an explanation written by the late Lon Rombough, that I'd saved - probably from around 1999-2000: "Several years ago I went through Jim Claypool's notes and used the results to work out a theory of the inheritance of sex in American persimmons, to take into account the appearance of limbs of opposite sex flowers on a tree (limbs of male flowers on female trees, etc.). For convenience, we decided to call ordinary persimmons as having XX for female and XO for male, O being the plant equivalent of a Y chromosome. Though in truth I think there isn't much difference between the X and O, only a very few genes. Opposite sex types had at least one of those chromosomes with a mutant gene on it that coded for flowers of the opposite sex on the tree, and those were X' and O'. A tree that had X'X was a female that would have some limbs of male flowers. X'O was a male that would, in some cases, have small seedless fruit on it. X'X' was a female that had a strong tendency to produce male limbs, while X'O' was a male that would produce perfect flowers and normally seeded fruit. Now, with the X'O', it was possible to self-pollinate it and get trees that were O'O' and these, theoretically, should be essentially perfect flowered types. However, we don't have enough test crosses to verify that. What it boils down to, is that it should be possible to cross the males that produce perfect flowers and get some seedlings that produce ONLY perfect flowers, or at least enough to make them truly useful, not just something that takes up space once pollination is done. I hope this makes sense to all as it takes a LOT of writing to re-explain the whole thing. I am hopeful of doing a book on American persimmons - kind of a new version of "Persimmons for Everyone" and will include it in that when/if I can find a publisher." - Lon Rombough I'm not sure whether Lon ever finished his persimmon book before his untimely passing in 2012, at age 62.

I've had no problems throwing several rotting persimmons into a large, well established worm bin. Try testing small quantities first and gradually ramp up. Each worm bin ecosystem is different. Temps, moisture, bedding, worm population, etc. will determine what your worm bin can handle. Andrew
