I have a potted fig tree, can I plant it now?
Comments (6)In the case of borderline hardy plants, there is more of a risk of loosing them if they are planted out now. One option would be to provide some protection. There are all kinds of ways to do that, but one way would be to drive three fenceposts around the plant (once planted), encircle with a breathable material (like netting or chicken wire), and fill in with straw or other very breathable material until late winter/very early spring....See MoreMini/Semi mini trailer pots?
Comments (1)Hi, Sara: I only have trailers and have grown Tiny Wood Trail so here's my experience: No pot larger than 1.5" to 2" Once your plant is fully developed, you can make tiny, tiny slits in the neck and where you have made your slits, new crowns will grow. Tiny Wood Trail is really, really small. Almost a micro-mini. It also does well in thumb pots. Good luck, Linda...See MoreSo I bought a mini greenhouse... Now what?!?
Comments (3)These shelving units with a plastic cover are not really "greenhouses" per say. Rather, they could be called a coldframe....they are really just meant to be used as an assistance to protect some seedlings or young plants from the worst of the elements. The cover will help protect young plants from wind, will help hold in some humidity. It will NOT do a very good job of holding in heat in cold temperatures....the plastic provides no insulation to speak of. On the other hand, if it is in full sun it will overheat dramatically and burn all your tender young plants very quickly. So...you have to learn the optimum conditions for making it useful. Use it indoors to start some seeds, with the cover zipped up to retain humidity inside. Move it to a protected spot outdoors in warmer weather, where it won't get blown away by wind and in partial shade to use it to grow on your seeds and to harden off young plants before planting them in the ground. Unzip the cover and pull it back to provide ventilation and air movement. My Mom would place hers in the open door of her garage on nice days in the spring, just back a bit so it wasn't in full sun, to grow on and harden off seedlings. It was easy to just close the garage door and zip up the cover at night when it got cold, to protect the seedlings. Jnjfarm is using theirs exactly the way they are meant to be used. The rest of the year...fold it up and put into storage....See MoreWhen could I remove the covers from the 2 ceramic pots of mini hostas?
Comments (10)To tell you the truth, I did not have time to check for pips tonight. I drove up to the front of my co-op. Parking is always a problem because of a nearby city college down the street. Their inconsiderate students take up ALL the available parking on my street and around the area. I came home tired tonight, ready to count pips. But someone was parked in their car right in front of my co-op taking up 2 precious spaces. I rolled down my window and said, "Could you please pull up a couple of feet, so that I can park behind you?" She started throwing filthy words at me that started with "b" (!) and called me a racist, etc. and then said that because I asked, she would not move. I told her that such filthy remarks do a disservice to her people and that it was inappropriate to respond with such behavior in response to a simple and courteous request. She got out of her car and started to shove me, threaten me, all the while taking cell phones pics of me (it was already dark) and screaming filthy words and racial epithets to me. I called 911 and gave them her license number. Then she hastily pulled away. The cops came and I described the situation. They agreed that if I was the aggressor, I would not have been the one to call 911. We gave each other a "gangsta" handshake and the cops left. At the end of this, I was soooo totally angry. I have to put up with this sort of behavior all day at the high school where I work and now when I come home, it comes from a so-called adult. I will try to count pips tomorrow. Jeez!...See Moreemerald1951
