Grocery store Peach Trees

Hello everyone.. this is my first post on Gardenweb but I've been reading the site for several months.

While at a grocery store this afternoon, I saw

a handful of Peach trees for sale. Each tree was

about 5 feet tall and came in a 3-4 gallon container. I was

close to buying one, but wanted to get your advice first.

I know there are peach trees grown with success in southeastern SD, but how good of quality do you think these

grocery store trees are? I've seen the same store selling lemon/lime/orange trees in years past, but they only get a few of each due to our northern location and the difficulty of growing them. I have never seen peach trees before.

1) If I buy one and plant it in the ground, how do you think it would take?

2) There's a small chance I might be re-locating later this year. If that happens, can I transplant it back to a container for my move?

3) Given the height of the tree (height roughly 5 feet) and the crown (2-3 feet diameter), might it be mature enough to produce small unedible fruit or might it need a few years to get acclimated to the climate/transplant?

I would greatly appreciate any help you all might be able to give me. I currently have 2 lemon and 1 orange trees that I bring in and out every year. I don't know if I can handle yet another tree that requires the same in/out due to weather.

1) Yes it should take???
2) Perhaps; but many factors come into play.
3) No! if some fruit is started either the plant will abort or you should abort the fruit!!! at the very least three years after planting.
The problem from getting fruit trees from a store is this , you DON"T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GETTING!!!!A reputable nursery in your area would be my choice

Is there a website or email group that continues with this thread: I've read this thread both here and in the frugal forum, and since I noticed the person in the frugal forum really wanted the thread to stop, and both have been inactive for a few years... I imagine folks don't want to restart here, but I'm interested in a handful of plants, not mentioned here, that I imagine could be grown from pieces of grocery store vegetables, like: a. broccoli from a bit of stalk? b. belgian endives from their stalks( since lettuce and cabbage work from their stalk)? c. kale, collard, mustard greens that don't end in just a leaf tip, but are still connected, thus have about a 1/2 inch to an inch of stalk --would that grow? d. how about brussel sprouts bought on their stalk, would the stalk grow brussels if planted? e. will a turnip or rutabega root grow if you plant the greens with 1/2 inch of stalk, or even if you just plant that course stalk with no greens? Again, I'm just listing my curiousities here, but I don't expect the thread to be reopened and my questions answered, --I'd just like to be referred to a website or email list that specificly focuses on this if you found out about one. As long as the stems stay green, they'll be OK. You may loose the foliage from stress but if the stems aren't black they should bounce back. I've rescued a bunch of these mini's and haven't lost one yet. Keep them on the north side of your home and when you start seeing new growth, start to move them into the sun. I keep mine in one gal. pots until I see roots showing in the drain holes. Then I move them into their new home.

A small corner market here had too much bulk (barrels) oats delivered. Store owner said she ordered one but three were delivered so they were 19 cents a pound. Way to cheap to believe so I tasted a few with the owners permission. Nice and fresh. I bought 12 pounds...lol. I double wrapped in about 2 pound bags and have them in the deep freezer. We eat oats everyday fall thru spring but still I see a lot of oatmeal cookies in the future. Lol. Walmart had a 2# package of Great Value butter for 4.27 that's a good deal. Can't think of anything else at the moment.
