What does GPS 911 mean?

I was wondering because I am trying to replace my husband's cell phone. We got one off of freecycle, and when I tried to activate it to his phone # they said it wasn't GPS 911 compliant. Does that mean that it is satelight visual? Talk about breach of privacy! I don't want some satelight taking pictures of me, or even knowing where I am for that matter grrr..

So now I have to try to find another phone that will work with our service.

Perhaps this has something to do with the use of 911 with cell phones so that they can locate you? I think this is supposed to be a feature on new phones...not sure though.

Our government requires GPS tracking devices in all cell phones. Many states already have sought federal monies to enhance surveilance of private citizens for the purpose of determining "travel habits". Technology is already in place and in use that allows government, and likely private endeavors, to track and catalog every move of our phones.

I'm still around sporadically and check in once in a while to see what's up in the lives of my cyberfriends. Yes....an active website is one where there are enough interesting discussions to keep folks 'tuning in' and enthused enough to want to participate. And yes, it's a self-fulfilling prophecy. It's been quieter here in years past when there were only a few....literally...participants because of all the internal strife and it had nothing to do with paying for use. A few of us like myself and Marda posted just to keep the forum alive. I'll probably always consider this my original internet home and it has been since you could the postings on every forum in less than an hour. I suspect facebook and blogs and twitter do pull off a certain amount of audience. There is and has always been private groups within this forum and that's OK. Myself, I consider facebook a necessary evil to keep up with events of family and close friends because they have the assumption if it's posted there, it'll get back to you. Not necessarily true and speaks to the times. Why I'm not here often has more to do with my life than the forum. I sincerely send my prayers to those on this forum facing serious problems and know my thoughts are with you. I thank God this is not the case with me. I am just in one of those life transitions where I am turning the page to another chapter and am spread thin both physically and mentally. I consider myself semi-retired from my business but it still requires a lot of my attention to put it to bed so to speak. My mother, for whom I did a lot of care-giving is passed away now almost four years an I am still dispersing her belongings and tending her property. I am still trying to do all the repairs to my old house...for the most part by myself. I have several geneolgy projects in the fire only I can finish and it needs done. And I have a wonderful new g'child whom I WILL take time to be a part of his life. That still leaves my gardens and fruit trees and animals to attend. I think some folks see me as one who isn't happy unless they're working at something for the sake of it, and that's not how it is. I have interests I'd love to pursue and places I'd love to go......but I still have to steal time to do things like that. The only difference is now I do, and let other stuff slide. Stuff I prolly shouldn't. So, every once in awhile I stop and get serious about catching up so I can relax a bit and actually enjoy it. That's where I am right now.

Hi old friends, Been a long time and just lurk now and then. Lots of changes, home, state, gardens and friends, but always think of my GP friends. I had to look up my old password, and realized that my AARP, Medicare passwords are easier to find than GP! LOL Especially this time of the year I visit LindaC in my mind, Suzi, Andi, Liz and Robert. Ruth Anns, newly painted bathroom and the pergola was a story that still makes me smile. I recently shared the Dogs in Elk, with friends that they read as they went elk hunting and they laughed till they cried. Tammy was a trip and would never attend our swaps in N. CA although she was invited. I miss my old CA friends and hope that Maggie and others drop in to say hello. As you may remember, we moved after 40 years in CA to our home state of WA. Exchanged the Salvias and Cannas for Ferns and Rhodies. We love our new life and being with the hundreds of relatives has been wonderful. At the time of my son's illness your prayers were so important and he is now the founder and director of his own foundation. Middle son is now here with us in the PNW and husband is retired. I brought plants with me especially those from trades on GP and from the Get-together. That was one of the most fun events I have ever attended and Robert knocking on the motel room and saying 'Candy Gram' was one of the funniest moments of all. Linda, I use chicken wings for my soup and everyone loves it. What a lot of fun we used to have. Dicken, he is in my heart and I still cry when I reread the emails from him. It was a sweet time and life is far more busy now that we are with all our families. Have a wonderful spring, we are still in freezing nights here in Seattle but the ferns and Rhodies are happy. Tricia, I'm not sure I'm the best person to ask, but my impression is that its the same as everywhere else, it depends on the local market. For instance, I live in Southern Ontario (about an hour west of Toronto), where the market is night and day difference from say Manitoba or Saskatchewan. Just an hour east in Toronto, the market is also very different and is still fairly strong. Right here in my city, it seems to be hit or miss... definitely down from 3 years ago when we bought here. A house would hit MLS and before you could schedule a viewing, it would be SOLD. Some other houses in my neighbourhood have been on the market since late last summer, but pricing is really to blame. They didn't seem to notice that in the last 3 years the market has changed, the demand has reduced and the inventory is pretty high, especially this spring. While interviewing realtors to list our house with, all of them commented on how cautious buyers were being and how they wanted to see 20+ property options before narrowing down their choices. In contrast, 3 years ago, we looked at 3 houses, all had one offer on the night we were ready to choose one and make an offer and we had to really compete to be the chosen offer! In our case, we offered $1100 over asking price and with only financing as a condition, even though we were already "approved". Our next purchase will be near Ottawa (600km east) and again their market is different again, especially since we'll be looking in the rural areas of Ottawa. Many of the rural properties have been on the market for some time and a couple new ones have been listed very recently. If they are priced correctly, have a convenient commuting location and are in good condition, they sell pretty quickly, I guess that IS just standard everywhere :) I'm not sure if that answers your question about our market or just raises more! I'm just happy I don't have to scrub like a maniac today and now I can get other things done like make time for a hair cut and get the oil changed in my van! GP

Actually I believe this legislation stemmed from several crimes where woman were kidnapped and murdered. Their families were outraged that even though the women had dialed 911 on their cell phones, the crimes could not stopped because the police could not find them in time. Thus the GPS locators. However I do believe that this technologly, intended for good, could be abused and used for less savory purposes.

It means that all Americans are in deep crap!!!
This is a great feature, however, by law; it can only be an option. This is the kind of thing that MUST be stopped before America turns into Nazi Germany. It is very unconstitutional, and illegal. Things are bad here! The cops just shot an unarmed man over 30 times here, for car theft! They had him stopped, and shot out his tires, then open fired on him, because he didn't get out of the car for over 30 minutes! They shot and killed an old deaf man because he didn't here them tell him to wake up and get off of the couch! They were looking for his son. They killed a man on a drug raid because they made a noise and the man went outside to check the noise. He had a broom...But it turned into an assault weapon after they killed him. His 12 year old daughter witnessed it all. The raid netted 1/2 joint!!!!!

You've hear of copy-cat crimes? Here, we have copy-cat cops! They hear about a crime, and then have to find the same crime here! Do you remember Columbine? Well, our cops found a plot to do the same thing here, and arrested a few kids. The cops had "evidence" that the kids were going to kill everyone in school...3 years later when they got to High School!!! There is no room in America for trigger happy paranoid cops!!! When they murder, they should pay twice the penalty because they are here to "Serve and protect", not kill for pleasure, or out of fear!

Louisiana no longer has the 4th amendment, (Not because of Katrina). Freedom of Speech is on the way out...Come on people! Wake up!

GPS 911 = another part of the Constitution that is now gone! Chipping away at the iceberg so no one really notices until it's gone. Vote to preserve the Constitution. It's what makes America the best place on Earth!

Now, I don't drink a drop and don't approve of DWI, but check this example of Texas law...
You can't be forced into taking a Breathalyzer. It violates the 4th and 5th Amendments. However, if you refuse the Breathalyzer, you lose your Drivers license. This violates the 8th Amendment...Cruel and unusual punishment. How can you be punished for standing up for your Constitutional Rights?

Unfortunately, thanks to the government which enjoys making problems so that they can fix them, we are already on our way to Nazi Germany. We have been since hippies turned into yuppies and took over our government.
Look at gun control, states where there are less gun control laws, have less rapes, murders, break ins, and hijacks because people can and will defend themselves given the chance. You wont find those statistics mentioned in mainstram media.
I could go on, but Ill get off the soap box, because freedom of speach is not allowed in most social circles. Ill leave the social commentairy to Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, and Matt Drudge.

Guns scare me. I've got no stats to prove anything, except that they give me the heebie-jeebies: 100% of Shellies agree that guns scare Shelly. People go wonky with the guns, and then BAM! before you know it, someone's put an eye out.

But then, you know, I'm from NB, Canada. In New Brunswick, people with guns also tend to have a can of Alpine beer in the other hand.

Here is a little gun control fact...
1. The Brady Bill was Reagan.
2. The ban on assault weapons was written by a republican and quickly passed through a republican majority house, and blamed on Clinton.
3. This hippie wants to keep his gun, and has never met a "hippie nazi". That's a new one on me?
4. The democrats didn't write any of the gun control laws that we now have.
5. Vote outside of the two "hate" parties.
