Damiana, Saw Palmetto, Ginseng, Withania and Yohimbe are all 'men's herbs' (but not exclusively - they have other uses as well). None is a magic wand, and all need to be used with care and medical supervision after a thorough investigation into the cause(s) of the lack of libido. Brahmi is also used to improve premature ejaculation.

For men and women experiencing problems becoming sexually aroused or responsive, rub the following mixture onto the base of the spine. Simmer 3 1/2 tablespoons Fenugreek seeds for 5 minutes in 1 litre of water, remove from heat and add 2 handfuls of Savory. Leave to infuse for up to 1 hour. Drink 2 cups of this tea before bed as well as rubbing on the back. In addition, use dried Savory on all meat dishes and with vegetables as a seasoning. Winter or Summer Savory can be used.

Mix equal parts of Yohimbe (Yohimbine) bark, dried Schizandra berries and Ginkgo Biloba leaves and seeds and grind to a powder. Compress into tablets and take about 6 tablets 30 minutes before sexual activity. A tincture made with the same ingredients in brandy, and about 12 drops squirted under the tongue will work the same way. It will cause men to have stronger, longer-lasting erections and improve their mental attitude towards sex. However, if taken too frequently, the effect wears off. (Yohimbe may bring on erection that won't go away (!) causing extreme discomfort.)

You're welcome. I've said above that the man in question should seek medical advice before embarking on a herbal regime to sort out his problem. One common disease notorious for causing loss of libido is diabetes. There are many others, but this is one of the most common reasons for sexual problems. Diabetes is often a 'hidden' disease, which can go undiagnosed for years, but it's increasing in frequency with our modern lifestyle, and untreated is a very serious condition indeed - like fatal. As with any other condition, self-diagnosis is a dangerous practice, almost as dangerous as self-treatment. Please do get him to take my advice and see a doctor before trying any herbal treatment.

I would agree with the "get a thorough physical" before self-medicating for impotence. Blood pressure and prostate problems can also cause impotence.

Yohimbe, for one, can make your blood pressure shoot really high. It is also known for causing excruciating headaches. (in combination with the clot-inhibiting activity of othre herbs or even aspirin, this can be a stroke waiting to happen!)

Fix the LIFSTYLE:
Stop smoking, if you smoke (the number ONE cause of impotence, because it constricts the blood vessels)

Get 30 min to an hour of brisk exercise (walking, biking, treadmill, etc.)

If overweight, adjust the diet to lose weight

Make sure the diet is a nutriitonally sound one

I have had good luck with yohimbe as a supplement to help build lean muscle. (It is reputed to boost testosterone levels.) It can make you feel edgy like caffeine, though. St. John's Wort may help if the sexual problem is related to depression. There are SO many things that can cause loss of libido, and if you don't figure out the underlying problem, there's no point in throwing rememdies at it.

A blood test to check for a hormonal problem is a must. Though I imagine all the rubbing,as Daisy Duckworth suggested, even without the herbs would cause arousal in anyone. lol Stress is a big factor in loss of arousal. Long hard days at the job can cause problems too. Sometimes the problem is mental or emotional and not physical. Yohimbe works well for women also. I tried it and had no adverse effects, though different things affect people differently. I think trying too hard would cause problems too. I know if I had to do this and that and something else right before sex, I wouldnt be able to feel aroused. Jeffseattle is right. There are a lot of things that can cause problems. Rule out the physical before you throw a bunch of remedies into your lives. Then rule out the mental and emotional. If it seems to be none of these (the mental is hard to prove)Medications can be a problem too. Try a nice nightie. Some problems have the simplest solutions.

Dave, you're playing with fire, and a 'sample' will tell you nothing as blood pressure is 'silent' no matter how bad it gets, and you must first see a doctor to make sure you don't have some medical problem.

Yohimbe is contraindicated for anyone who experiences anxiety disorder or panic attacks, PTSD.

The action of Damiana is via a mild irritation of the urethra. It's drank in teas a couple of hours earlier etc. but doesn't act on the blood flow.

Likely causes for impotence are tobacco due to decreased blood flow and damage to capillaries.. high blood pressure, diabetes and alcohol.

There are useful herbs but these are the health risks/factors that would be addressed first.

If smoking is the culprit, check into herbs and feedbacks systems to reduce and stop smoking.

You can use Ibogaine to overcome heroin/cocaine/alcohol/nicotine addiction. I'm not sure of the legal status of this plant however. It might be illegal in the US.

St. John's Wort supplement worked for my sex drive and depression but it was in very massive doses, and I wouldn't recommend it.

I've been looking to grow Yohimbe for a while. It looks promising and in the drug culture this plant is talked about a lot (among Morning Glory, Datura, etc) because it's more than a placebo.

Read a book called The Edge Effect. You might want to see if you have a shortage of brain neurotransmitters before trying herbs; many of the herbs used for libido changes are herbs that will affect neurotransmitter activity in your brain. This book will give you more of an idea which one of four major neurotransmitters may be lacking and give you a dietary and amino acid way to supplement the lack. Good luck!

I agree with every one on yohimbe and have taken it several times, but alos look into Tribulus Terrestris and Tongkat Ali these are both natural alternatives and help allot with erectile dysfunction. I treated my impotence with Tongkat Ali for about 2 years but after some time my ED got severe and I had to start taking Levitra. If yohimbe or Tribulus does not work for you I would recommend levitra, ask your doctor for samples. I am very knowledgeable when it comes to impotence so let me know if you need help...
