Apple varieties, how'd I do?

Well, my trees from Cummins will arrive sometime soon. I've got some apricot, a few peach, 2 sweet cherries and a few plum coming (I really wanted to try the Bubblegum plum). I was curious if anyone had any personal opinions on my apple choices for my northern PA (zone 5) area. My orchard receives nearly full sun, features decent soil and most of it is very well drained.

I've got Ginger Gold, Sweet 16, Pixie Crunch, Kingston Black (my first pure cider apple), Macoun and Rubinette coming this year. Of those, Macoun and Sweet 16 are the only ones that I've previously had. As you can probably tell, I'm a big fan or a tart/sweet apple like Honeycrisp (I already have enough of them and many other varities).

I have sweet 16 and Rubinette, so I thinnk you did good with them. We will both find out when we get apples.
Dabinette from research not experience-- the best single scource cider,,,,,but prone to scab, prone to canker, biennal. Hopefully your growing conditions will suit it.

Those are all great varieties that should work out fine for Zone 5. I've got a 3-year-old Sweet 16 that hasn't fruited yet but there are a TON of fruit buds this year. I'm actually grafting half of this tree over to Kingston Black this spring because I want more cider varieties. I already have one branch of Foxwhelp (actually Fauxwhelp, another supposed cider variety) grafted to my Cortland tree and it appears ready to burst with blossom any day now. Seems to be showing a little pink with the green in the buds right now. If so, the Fauxwhelp will be my first variety to bloom this year, followed by Cortland which has the next biggest buds, with Sweet 16 close behind. Macoun is very similar to Cortland so I think that will be a good choice for Zone 5. Nice thing about the McIntosh family of varieties is that you can use them for eating, pie, juice, sauce -- it's all good -- and I find them to be beautifully shaped trees that grow very well in Zone 5 with minimal need for spreading and pruning. You can't say all these things about many other apple varieties.

Yes, I had the same view as yours before I read the above paper. It has the most vigorous, G30 and M111, as having the least damage and the least vigorous having the most damage. In fact, it turns out the correlation is perfect: the most vigorous stocks do the best and the least vigorous the worst in their study, and the medium vigor ones are .. in the middle. I wished they had included a highly susceptible vigorous stock for comparison, or a low-vigor resistant one like G16. The technical details are all about gene expression, but that is also closely related to overall vigor. Also they use lab inoculation of trees with the disease which is not directly related with field incidence, so that could be throwing things off as well. One other thing this study points out is there are many different strains of fireblight and they have different rates of severity based on stock/scion. Its another way it is very hard to make a table of general susceptibility. My pears hardly ever get strikes and I expect it is related to the FB strain(s) that are predominant in my orchard. Also the differences are not that large in this study, on the more severe strain its something like 20% max difference in how much necrotic tissue there is between different rootstocks. 20% is something you might just barely notice in your orchard when pruning out strikes. Bob, I have Court Pendu Plat in about 6 hours of sun. I had it too crammed but thinned some trees around it so hopefully next year I will get a better crop. Its a decent apple, its of the yellow-fleshed school along with Pomme Cloche, Roxbury Russet, Reinette Clochard, De Jaune, Pitmaston Pineapple, and Orleans Reinette. All these guys have yellow flesh and lots of sweets and sours and not much aromatics. They are all fairly similar in taste; I have found Roxbury Russet the most reliable. My Margil had a big load this year but the squirrels got nearly all. It still has a few so hopefully I will get a harvest. Its a later apple, October if I recall. The tree is stunningly non-vigorous, I thought it was too crammed in so pruned away its neighbors but its still scrawny. I had good Swaar a long time ago but have only gotten mediocre ones recently. My original graft died and the new one is not yet fruiting so I don't have much in the way of results on it. So far this year Cherryville Black has been my favorite new apple, it is an early apple that has been hanging well on the tree without going mealy too fast. It is very sweet with a well-balanced flavor. Smallness and mild russet will keep it from ever being a mainstream apple. Akane was excellent-tasting but they rot too much. Scott

Nice set up, Mes111. Yes, Appleseed70, over the fence is fair game. Although I'd like the kids to wait because they'll grab them unripe and sprayed. I'd give them better apples anyway. The two trees show up there are basically the same. The bushy one is more overgrown because that's how it produces, but I am working on thinning out the top to get more sun to the lower. I'm not sure what the last tree was in the picture in '09. Judging from the description it was sawed off and grafted onto because I didn't like the variety. It's basically the same but bigger. Free standing and ready to go wild now. Hopefully should bear this year. Which reminds me, I want to get out there and put some more room between tiers. I've got two more both spur type this time. If the Macspur survives the fireblight that killed 2 and hurt it and another last year and starts producing the bushy one will be removed (maybe grafted to a free standing spot since it seems to withstand fireblight). The Earliblaze on the right is much better behaved than the Macspur on the left which is acting more like a semi-spur than it did on the free standing one which died. This was the Earliblaze last year before picking and pruning.

The easest to root is a 4-6 inch cutting of firm new growth taken early June. apply 0.3 to 0.8% IBA (Rooting hormone) stick in well drained soil. & mist
