This happens to me on a regular basis and I've successfully stood mine up as you discuss, but don't wait too long as the roots will quickly re-establish in their current location, then you'll disturb them again. If it's not too tall, it will often stand back up by itself with just a little curve at the bottom of the stalk. I have some 3 foot that got flattened the other day, letting it stand itself up.

Thanks for the input. Mine is 5-6 feet tall and just starting to tassel. Since it's going into reproductive, I figure I'd take a serious hit on production unless I get it standing back up.

You'll get your corn back up. The other plants will probably recover. Nice garden! Pray that you don't get hail. Monsoon season has begun early in New Mexico.

My potatoes were recently flattened too. Will they keep growing? Shoud I try to stand them back up and maybe tie them?

Corn doesn't look too bad from the pics - mine is frequently flat to the ground - the whole patch. I'd only worry about the ones laying way over.

How did you post the pic - I can't figure how to do it.

Potatoes will keep growing, but it wouldn't hurt to hill them up a little

Mine are hilled already. They were flowering. I've never done anything with them in the past when they go down and they produce fine. Since the spuds are underground, they don't care if the plants are flat or standing.

Thanks for the advice, Farmerboybill. I'm just going to let them be and see how things go - I'm hoping for lot's of yummy potatoes!

And here's a story about the grass always being greener, so to speak! We haven't gotten any significant rain for over a month. Just a few five minute showers here and there, or incredible downpours that come down with such force that it doesn't sink into the ground. I've been handwatering flowers with watering cans (we have rainbarrels that did catch the little rain we've had) and using soaker hoses on the veggies so I don't stress our well too much. No one's talking drought yet so I guess it isn't oo bad, but the ground is bone dry and my plants are thirsty!

I'll take a little of your rain, please!

Don't feel bad, it happens to me to a varying extent every year. My extols me to hill the corn every year. She thinks that it will produce more prop roots thereby minimizing the lodging. I agree with her about causing greater prop root formation but, still I get blowdown. The reasons I don't like hilling: 1) it is alot of physical work 2) it doesn't seem to stop the lodging 3) I have to flatten the hills back out in the fall (more work). However, this year, in order to reduce the labor I used my tiller to loosen about an inch of soil on both sides of each row and hilled the plants with the easy to move soil. It made hills about 8" tall around the plants. We had 3" of rain wind and pea sized hail Monday evening over a 2 hour period and my corn is still standing. HURRAY! I'm looking forward to picking standing like a homo sapiens rather than a gorilla this year.
There may be another benefit to hilling. For the 1st time ever, I have corn root worms. Having the extra roots that formed from hilling may have saved me from serious losses from the worm s the plants may have grew new roots faster than the worms could kill them. About 5% of my plants fell over and shriveled which is how I discovered the (very late in the season) worms.

I feel for your farmerboy. I don't grow corn but my neighbor does. Earlier this week we had three inches of rain and winds clocked up to seventy. It took out alot of his corn. He got it back up though for the second time this year. Then, again today we got 2or 3 more inches and down went the corn. Durning the storm I saw him out there tieing it up. But I dunno, it's thundering and lightening out right now and just pouring. Mid central IL has gotten so much rain this year. We're a good 13inches above normal.
My garden's suffering. I THINK, that I'm getting downy mildew. I'm checking into it. And gosh darn it, my tomatoes are just starting to turn red. Tomorrows forecast is for severe storms.
I've heard that there's hardly any sweet corn for sale at the farmer markets this year. Most of it has been lost. Saw one ad, some small time gardener selling it for 12ears/5.50 Wow. Wishing you all the best with your corn. :) Sudz

Just a few weeks ago hail punched holes in most of my broad leaf plants like squash and cucumbers and even the beans. They bounced back but was sure to slow it down. This after a cool spring and summer so summer crop season just was not able to get off to a quick start.
The snow peas on the other hand are still fruiting and the vines are over 7 feet. Mid July and peas usually don't mix.
