Help save my old apple tree-grafting
Comments (3)Here are some of the links I've saved that I found very helpful. http://citrus.forumup.org/about1762-citrus.html http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNXDPVfJBW4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKTgiFVpAUE http://blip.tv/midfex/tutorial-t-bud-and-chip-bud-fruit-tree-grafting-techniques-350977 Konrad also has a beautiful set of photos of his very refined bark grafting. I hope he re-posts them. If your old tree has watersprouts that grew last year go out and cut a couple off. Cut them into sections about a foot long, wrap in a damp, not soggy, paper towel, and place them in a sealed ziplock bag in the refrigerator. They should make excellent scion material. If you don't have watersprouts (which are new growth shooting right up from the middle of older, established branches) look for the longest pieces of new growth -last year's growth- that you can find. If there's been any pruning on the tree there should be some, but on old and neglected trees they can be very hard to come by. If so, prune a few branches back into established wood to encourage some new growth. Prune back to a bud or a young fork -and nip the young fork too, again back to a bud. You'll need a place to graft the scions to, but first concern yourself with gathering and storing the scions. Once you have some scions to work with people here will be glad to speak to the questions of rootstock. This is a very doable, fun project that needn't cost you a lot of money and will put you in the company of some very interesting people, and may well become a lifelong interest. Good luck. :-)M...See MoreMore advise needed apple grafting on balled up tree
Comments (5)If you just want your old variety on this new tree I would probably graft it low by decapitating the main trunk just below where you want the branches to start on your new tree. That way you can be reasonably confident that everything that grows above that is the same variety as your older tree. If you have other trees you bought I'd suggest grafting your older tree variety onto one that was a red apple so you will be able to know for sure which is which later on....See Moreapple tree seeping from graft

Comments (2)Hi Marg. Yes, you can graft to the old tree, and not just from a Mac but from thousands of apple varieties. That might not always be the best way to get good bearing trees, but it certainly is done. Google "Top-working apple trees" for loads of information. Virtually all fruit trees that are sold today are grafted trees. The grower starts with a rootstock chosen for its particular qualities (size, drought-disease resistance, anchorage, those kinds of things) and slips a dormant bud from a particular variety in through a slit in the bark. Everything that grows from that bud is the new variety, and everything else is pruned away. Voila, new tree. Trees grown from seed will not be true to type, as a rule, although they will still be apples, and may be very good or bad. I wouldn't hesitate to move the seedlings- I doubt you're going to hurt a mature tree much by poking around its roots a bit, as long as you don't use a back-hoe. If you want to learn about grafting noddle around a bit on this site and via google, and you'll get a glimpse of what's possible. (Keep in mind that not everything possible is a good idea!) Then you'll have a whole new set of questions. Good luck, M Here is a link that might be useful: A grafting forum with lots of stuff...See Morenovagrdnr7a
