Osmocote for blueberries a good idea?

Hi agin everyone

I have read of many people using osmocote for their blueberries but when I went to the store to pick some up I saw somthing that didnt make sense...It has nitrate in it!!!

I know I have been told many times to NEVER use a fertilizer that has nitrate nitrogen in it on Blueberries.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Anyone who has read the label has noticed it. I don't know why anyone would use Osmocote on blueberries, unless they have a special acidic formulation I don't know about. Ammonium sulphate or Miracid are two fertilizers that are appropriate for blueberries. Hollytone is also fine, but a little pricey for the nitrogen it delivers, although anyone willing to pay the $$$ for Osmocote wouldn't be put off by the Hollytone price.

I usually use cotton seed meal for my blueberries. It is organic and is a natural acidic fertilizer that blueberries love. I also sometimes add a little (table spoon or two per plant) of Ammonium Sulfate or other equivalent to boost the acidity. I also multch with pine needles for the acid affect. I usually get the cotton seed meal from my local farm store. They order it for me special but it is very cheep. About 10 dollars for a 25 lb bag.

I was hoping to see a response from someone more experienced than I am, but since no one has answered yet... I have grown blueberries with great success in Montgomery County MD. My guess is that if the best sun is close to the house you should go with that. I have blueberries planted in a bed with strawberries around them, since both love acid soil. I amended the soil (a lot) with peat and compost, and every couple of years acidify it again. But I think that if you have any luck at all, you will want to have at least 3-4 plants of different varieties (ripening at slightly different times). They're wonderful... easiest thing I grow.

Thanks for the input. The dimensions (which could easily be changed) was based on the following college horticultural recomendations for width and depth in inches: Ohio State 18x18, NC 18-24x6-8, Iowa 24-36x12-18, Missouri 36-48x8-10, CA 36-48x12, Washington State 14-18 deep. In addition Cornell University, Washington State, and Missouri recommended drain tiles for soil that was slow draining. In addition the recommendation for containers was to plant in a half whiskey barrel (which appears to be 24 inches in diameter and 18 inches tall. The reason for the bulkhead fitting is to run a perforated drainage pipe 2 inches off the bottom of the trench into a collection tank. I would think that this would eliminate any chance of drowning my plants because the excess water would be drained away from the root zone. Much of the information I have read says to have a high organic matter content. Composted horse manure and sawdust would seem to be an ideal mix. The water source would be rain water. I have a well but would rather not use it. Thus the reason for trying to recycle the water and to eliminate any way for the water to escape to the surrounding area. That is the reason for the plastic. Please continue to post your opinions and questions and I will try to explain my thought process. This is a planning stage and I am trying to get it right the first time. My goal is for healthy plants, water conservation, minimal labor input after the initial planting.

Fill a cake or pastry. Glaze a chicken or other roast. Pancakes or other fried breakfast carbs. Spread on toast while building a roasted vegetable sandwich. On top of cheese crepes. Instead of ketchup on a hamburger sandwich. In a smoothie. As an treat instead of candy right off the spoon. Color and flavor icing with it. Freeze little drops of it and use them to cool, sweeten and flavor tea. Or stir it into tea straight if you're not trying to cool it, instead of honey. Dip the frozen drops in batter and make fritters. Make a sweet compound butter with some of the jam and some herbs like thyme or tarragon. Make a glaze to improve tasteless/not-sweet Winter fruit. Use thinned as the "sauce" for fruit or dessert pizza. Did I mention lick it off a spoon?

I apologize for not being more clear on my reference to using Osmocote with your troubled blueberries. The exact name of the product is "Osmocote Azalea, Camellia & Rhododendron Food". I've included an online link where you can buy it, but there are plenty of other locations you can purchase it at. Sorry for the confusion.

No harm done and you are not the only person to mention using Osmocote.
I have not seen this one in my local stores so thank you for the link.
It is soooo funny that we dont have this in my stores because the area of Charleston where I live (summerville)is known as "Flowertown" and I dont know if there is a single yard without an Azalea in it LOL.
Dont know if anyone has heard of it but we also have an Azalea Festival(some call it Flowertown Festival)every year and I still cant find a lot of the Azalea products people talk about LOL!
