'removed' a CAR gall this morning. too late?

my morning ritual watching the birds, I noticed an orange spot in a cedar near the house. I got a closer look through the binocs and saw the nasty alien looking cedar gall I had seen pics of online. "during warm rainy periods in spring, it opens up and ....tentacles..."

So I footed my way to the safe and grabbed the trusty shotgun and blew it out of the tree.

I picked a piece of it off the ground and took some close-ups. It was definitely active. My apple trees are just starting to leaf out with the biggest leaves barely opened and smaller than a dime. Think they were infected/affected?

I don't remember reading anywhere about how big the leaves have to be for the onset of infection. I haven't sprayed for CAR yet, I figured the leaves had to be out in order to get any good results from the fungicide spray. Hmmmm

Any thoughts?
