I have three small beds for my garden and flowers, and was wonder about the lime, like everyone else I've tried every brand of weed killer that says they kill wild onions, and they all lied, including the barrier mat, the little beggars shot straight through, no way to pull the bulb through the barrier. If there's a possibility lime can rid my gardens of wild onions, great! My problem with lime was that I always thought that was one of the ways you added acid to the garden, guess I was wrong, I never had to. Can someone explain? I have planted catnip every year for my cats, last year the bed was full of wild onions. If I pulled onions I also pulled catnip plants. The cats would not touch the catnip, and the wild onions were the only thing that was different, and this year, It has defied everything I've tried. I thought I had got rid of them and planted the catnip seeds, only to have the wild onions sprout back stronger, the seed is still about a week away from growth, I'm wondering if I can try spraying again? I read a article earlier that was suppose to be a pro Gardener talking, that said Otho extra, weed be gone, for crab grass, he says it will cut the waxy surface of the wild onion leaf and kill the bulbs Does lime have to be mixed into the soil or is it absorbed by watering? For those that say wild onions don't hurt the rest of the plants, they do absorb water needed for growing plants. This year our water levels are already low, if it comes down to a watering ban, it could be a major difference to your plants. Thanks ahead of time!

Makalu, Thank you, I believe wireworms are the culprit. Now that I think about, I believe I have seen these previously in the soil elsewhere. It seems there is not a whole lot I can do about it. Perhaps I can trap them somehow till the onions get bigger. I have some carrots sprouting now not too far from the onions. I hope they don't get dessimated as well. I read that wireworms like carrots as well. John

I have never allowed my cats outside because I was scared to death that something like this would happen. We live out in a remote area where there are lots of wild animals. We do have leash laws, but no one to enforce it. Animal control was called and that is when I found out that there were two dangerous dogs in our area. But that was to late to help Sebastian. I am a member of our community committee, and we have a meeting coming up in Sept. Believe me, there will be some changes made about getting word around about these kind of issues. We have never let Sebastian out without our supervision. Then he started spraying in the house more and more(he was neutered), and we tried everything to help him overcome that. The vet had him on anti-depressents, but he just laid around and didn't even function while on them. We figured that it wasn't any life for him to just lay around when he was such a outside lover. The only way we decided to give him the best life we could was to let him out during the day and bring him in at night. He would always come when I called him home, until Wednesday night. Then Thursday night my husband went to see if he could find him hiding somewhere and found him dead on the beach. I chased off the two dogs that killed him, but little did I know that they were after my baby. Thanks for all your understanding and concern. I just wish that neighbors would be more considerate also. I just don't know what else we could have done.

'Why on earth would you allow a breed like that in your home is beyond me. Keep the pit mix and expect more of the same incidents in the future.' Why would you question what type dog a person has if they are a responsible owner, as sarah appears to be. She has realized that there is a problem and working to resolve it. This dominance/jealousy problem could have risen with any breed dog, not only a Pitt. I have been around/worked with dogs all my life; the three times I was bitten was by a Cocker, a Jack Russell and a Sheltie. Pitts are not the top bitters, but as larger dogs they do more damage when they bite. A lot of smaller dog bites are also not reported making their bite statistics lower on the list. I've seen Pitts who were wonderful "people/kid dogs", who were wonderful pets and great with other pets and I've seen Pitts who were wonderful pets but couldn't be trusted around other pets, same as can be found in any breed. I can't say I would never have a Pit because I've had too many rescues to say never but I probably wouldn't go out and intentionally get a Pit due to not knowing bloodlines or how the animal had been raised. At one time there was a guy here in Florida who bred Pitts just for fighting. He took the worst of the worst and bred them over and over. If you got a dog from his bloodlines in error, you could very well have a problem because this IDIOT had bred them to be vicious. I've seen people who want their Pitts to be bad and train/abuse them to be so. Sadly, in cases like these the dogs are the ones who suffer. Personally I think that people of this ilk, people who fight dogs and people such as this breeder need to be put into a cage and forced to fight in the same manner which the dogs are forced to do. Animal abuse laws aren't strict enough in my opinion. People who abuse animals have no respect for any kind of life as far as I am concerned. Bless you sarah for fostering.
