My Sebastian just got killed by 2 dogs!

How do I handle this? I feel like such a failure to my cat for not keeping a eye on him better. I saw the dogs chasing something down the bank of our house to the river, and my husband found the cat there. He wouldn't even let me look at Sebastian. Sebastian had to be so scared and fought so hard is what my husband said. I had my DH bring him in a box up to the house so I could say bye and have him buried close to me. How do I get over this?

Oh, I am so sorry for you. How horrible. I'm sure your Sebastian had a good life...and I'm glad he got to be outside. You will see him again someday.

Well, a little better news. After checking things out this morning, I believe the loss is limited to just 6 plants. 3 yellow bells and 3 jalapenos. I hope that is the extent of it. However, I did notice some 2" tall beans may have suffered minor damage as did some sweet basil. I'll probably be able to get a more accurate picture in a few days but right now I don't believe it as bad as I first thought. organicislandfarmer, sometimes God does a lot of things that make no sense or with "no good reason" that is apparent to us but then, that's why He is God and we're just, well, "us". Rest assured, He has a plan! ;-)

LOL!!!! Glad I am not the only one! Sorry for your troubles, JAG. I will count myself blessed mine just trashed onions and radishes. Really, my pets and children do more damage than any pests (with the exception of SVB). Ome of my cats ate my first round of pepper seedlings early this spring, and had to restart them. I am NOT so sure I love my cat more than peppers (she is psychotic, but very pretty). As far as what to do with the radishes/onion area, I think I will just plant cabbage and cauliflauer there for a fall crop, once I dog-proof it better. Hard to do when said dog is a shepherd/collie/clydesdale--lol jk on the last-- mix. She is big enough and smart enough to get into anything she wants to.

I can't believe your animal control said that - how do they think the cats ended up there to begin with? You might want to try speaking with the Humane Society, or whatever group you've got there, to see if they can help you with the cats. I love cats, and have 4 of my own, but I would draw the line at a feral cat population in my yard. Obviously, if the cat food was gone, the skunks would wander away. I found an Oklahoma animal control company that has links to feral animal rescue organizations - I hope that something here can help you. One other thought - it might be worth a look at your town ordinances about having things that attract wildlife to your yard. There are a couple people here in NJ that are having fights with their towns because their cat/bird feeding is attracting rats, snakes, skunks, and heaven knows what else. Do the baths the same as you. Sometimes do them outside in the summer. I basically get the boys (separately of course) and myself into the tub. I wear shorts and a T-shirt and my hubby is outside the tub doing the soaping up and rinsing off since my 3 need to be kept in place or they will take off through the house shaking off suds and water. With my old girl my husband has to lift her in and then she gets bathed. Problem is, then she doesn't want to get out. She likes to lay in the tub for awahile. If we try and insist she will then have a seizure, so most times I just make sure she is as dry as possible and let her come out in her own time. I put a dry towel down outside the tub so she doesn't slip. When the baths are over I am soaked from head to toe, my DH is soaked, the bathroom walls are soaked, the floor is soaked, hallway a little soaked if they escape going thru the laundry room instead of out onto the deck to finish drying. Then there is the towel washing. That's another couple of hours to wash and dry all the towels it takes to bathe 3 dogs. Its always an ordeal and I don't bathe my guys often. Usually on if they have rolled in something of if my old girl has gone for a swim in the creek. All 3 are labs and labs shouldn't be bathed with soap on a scheduled regular basis. It messes up their coat. They have two coats because they are water dogs. All three dry differently. The boys dry quickly and the old gal has a much different furry type coat. It takes her 12 hours to dry. My friends all use a service called At Your Bark & Call. Van comes to your house, parks in the driveway, no mess, they bathe the dogs in the van, use their own water, etc., trim the nails, express anal sacks if necessary and dry them all without any horrible mess in your house. Haven't tried it. Too expensive to bathe 3 since it costs about $75.00 per dog. DH believes in doing things himself if he is able. Everyone I know who uses the service loves it. There may be one like it in your area if you are not opposed to spending that much.

I'm so sorry. It is hard not to keep thinking..What if? The day my Cinder waved good by to me as I left for work, only to be eaten by a bob cat. What if I had insisted on him staying in the house? I couldn't undo what happened. I gave him the best cat life that I could. Like you did for Sebastian. Cat's love their freedom and their risk taking. Much love to you Joann

I am sorry that your cat died. Losing a pet is like losing a member of your family.

Dogs are one of the many, many risks that outdoor cats face.

I would suggest that you adopt another cat from a shelter, when you are ready, and keep the new cat indoors in memory and in homage to your old cat.

One thing I have done in memory of my deceased pets, is that I have a St. Francis statue in my yard. And I have the names of my deceased pets engraved in flat stones that are placed around the statue in flower bed in my yard.

I`m sorry about your cat that had to be awfull for you .dont they have leash laws for dogs where you live our town you dont see any dogs running loose thats what you need in your town , as i said I am sorry

What an awful story - I'm so sorry for your loss Doris! I have always kept my cats indoors because I'm so paranoid about something like that (if I ever have kids they will ever leave the house either!) But I have friends who differ very strongly from my view, in fact one of my best friends is an animal activist, vegan, does animal therapy with developmentally challenged kids - the whole gamut - and she would never dream of keeping her cat indoors. She insists he is much happier when he can go outside and roam the fields and woods, and explore and sniff and have interesting adventures every day of his life. I'm sure your Sebastian had just as intersting a life as well, so please don't feel guilty. Shame on your neighbors for not training their dogs or keeping an eye on them when they are off the leash! I suggest you contact the animal control officer in your town to file a complaint.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I can't imagine how badly you feel, but forgive yourself and take the learning and try to move on. Joe Pyeweed gave excellent advise.

Folks, dogs off leash, cats off leash are both dangerous. Blaming the dogs doesn't bring the cat back.

I have never allowed my cats outside because I was scared to death that something like this would happen. We live out in a remote area where there are lots of wild animals. We do have leash laws, but no one to enforce it. Animal control was called and that is when I found out that there were two dangerous dogs in our area. But that was to late to help Sebastian. I am a member of our community committee, and we have a meeting coming up in Sept. Believe me, there will be some changes made about getting word around about these kind of issues. We have never let Sebastian out without our supervision. Then he started spraying in the house more and more(he was neutered), and we tried everything to help him overcome that. The vet had him on anti-depressents, but he just laid around and didn't even function while on them. We figured that it wasn't any life for him to just lay around when he was such a outside lover. The only way we decided to give him the best life we could was to let him out during the day and bring him in at night. He would always come when I called him home, until Wednesday night. Then Thursday night my husband went to see if he could find him hiding somewhere and found him dead on the beach. I chased off the two dogs that killed him, but little did I know that they were after my baby.

Thanks for all your understanding and concern. I just wish that neighbors would be more considerate also.

I just don't know what else we could have done.

You did the right thing. While it is horribly tragic, he obviously preferred being outside and you gave him a good life. Being a vegetable alive inside isn't much of a life.
