Acorn squash female flower -- already???

Good evening folks! I'm hoping someone can provide some insight/advice regarding an acorn squash plant that is already producing a female flower with a small fruit at it's base.

I started the squash from seed back in late March, transplanted it to a 8" container around mid-April and it had been in my makeshift greenhouse until a few weeks ago. After hardening the plant, with 5 - 6 healthy and strong true leaves, it was transplanted into the garden last weekend (5/24). Well, this evening (06/01) I was surprised to see that it has a female flower with a 3/4" fruit at it's base.

Doesn't it seem that it's a little early for the plant to be producing female flowers? Particularly here in New Hampshire? And, since there does not appear to be any male flowers to pollinate the female, should I prune the fruit from the plant so no energy is wasted on it? Or, should I just leave it there and let it drop naturally?
