Italian Fruit Orchards

Does anyone know of any Italian or American fruit orchards that sell Italian heirloom fruit trees? I can't find any American ones, and all the Italian ones won't ship to the USA. Thanks in advance!

What specifically are you looking for?

One can easily find Italian varieties of fig, kiwi and other fruit from sources online in the US. What I am not aware of is a specific "Italian" nursery.

Itheweatherman you are likely aware that carmine jewell and the romance series cherries are a hybrid of Prunus cerasus and prunus fruticosa. The seedlings of carmine jewell would likely grow the two seperate species if they are not sterile and if they are not patented in some way. For those not familiar with the variety prunus fruticosa see this article http://www.ag.ndsu.edu/trees/handbook/th-3-9.pdf. The romance series plants available in the usa can be obtained here http://honeyberryusa.com/honeyberry-plants-2.html among other places. The mongolian cherry is readily available in Canada from sources such as this one http://www.selectseedlingnursery.com/cherry.html for those that live in Canada. I did get a chance to search for the mongolian cherry again and do not find it offered from any sources I'm familiar with in the USA ; however it is growing in the USA http://plants.usda.gov/core/profile?symbol=PRFR2. Sylvia, The Fuyu persimmons you planted should start making fruit the second or third year after planting, granted you wont get many, but getting a few off your own tree is a great feeling. The trees do not have to be very big to make fruit.(4 to 5 feet high) With the first time fruiting you will get drops, this is normal as the tree adjusts to it's new home. Like you I have a local 'you pick' place to go, around a mile away, and pick different fruit from his trees. I pick up an empty basket when I go in, wander around his trees and pick what I like. He weighs the full basket on the way out and pay by the pound. I ride my electric bicycle to go pick fruit and I get exercise from pedaling because he is close. If I'm tired I can use the electric motor to come home. Slowly I'm putting in my own trees for an orchard here, I have plenty of room for it on ten acres. I can't wait until my trees start making different fruits. I'm trying different apricots to see if one variety will like Florida. If one type is good then I can graft it to the other apricot trees. The unfruitful trees are not wasted if you know how to graft when you do the yearly pruning. I also 'teased' a M111 root to make new roots & suckers I can separate for new apple trees to graft on to. Hi,I don't usually post here, but saw yours and decided to answer, since I have two chickens and a small orchard of fifteen fruit trees that I planted six years ago. I highly recommend the mix. I also have a pot bellied pig, and I compost her manure along with the chickens. They free range all day, all year. It gets down to freezing here in the winter, and I haven't had any problem. I think that would only occur if you had too many hens in a small space. I also put down a lot of mulch. Our climate is severely hot, but with all of the trees and plants, the animals and I have a beautiful and comfortable environment. Also, the chickens are great for bug control. They gobble up grasshoppers and are comical to watch. Stephenie

I have a really great, huge American plum here that I found by my woods last year. I'm always interested in fruit that can grow own-root :) If you want this one, let me know. I don't have any cold system for fruit cuttings, so if anyone else wants cuttings of my plum while it's dormant, this is the time. The fruits are 3/4 inch big and really flavorful and tasty, with a very tart skin. I eat them fresh out of their skins off the tree, if that helps anyone picture what they're like. They do fall off the tree when very ripe, in large masses, but many ripen before that for daily picking, too :)

Raintree nursery carries Butirra Precoce Morettini and Bella di Guigno pear trees.

I have found great sources for figs. But everything else seems to fall short. I want Italian pears, apples, olives, grapes, plums, and cherries, but can't seem to find them. Thanks for the Raintree nursery idea. Any others would be great.

Another avenue to Italian cultivar fruit trees is to graft your own. All types of fruit scion wood from Italian cultivars are available in USDA repositories available to the public. I was going through scions that I got in trade from California. One of the varieties I have for grafting this spring is called Pera Spadona di Solerno.

Thanks. I couldn't seem to find the website/way of contacting the USDA repository for more info. So I would first have to have a tree, then graft those on right? Or at least rootstock?

Plant the two Raintree pears in the Spring. I believe you have to order from USDA now to receive summer budwood. Chip bud those varieties you are interested in in late summer. The Bella di Guigno and Morettini produce very early so you can graft a late pears for a second crop. The Spadona di Solerno is a winter pear. The Coscia is late.

Thanks...I found some good things on USDA website. It says I would get cuttings? Can pears be propogated from cuttings, or do I need a tree to graft it to?

A few pear varieties can grow roots from cuttings. If the ones you order from USDA made roots it would still take about 3 years to get to Raintree size. Then grow 2-7 more years to get pears. A Raintree pear might need just 2-4 years to fruit after planting.

Ok thanks...I'll get some started trees first then worry about new cuttings to graft, etc.
