what is this mystery supposedly herb?

On clearance . No marker....

Can yall help identify?. I know... I should have took its picture other day before I planted it>... Cause lots of other foliage of sage etc back of it and other herbs next to it.. have a feeling its catnip????

Could be hyssop (which smells like licorice). If so, this is technically a herb, but not culinary, to my knowledge.

Perhaps it's been eaten by a very hungry slugs or snails. If you see a glisten or shiny trails, then it must be the culprit. I once planted seedlings of sweet red peppers and the next day it was eaten to the ground, it seems there wasn't any evidence that it was planted. When I sprinkle the ground with those slug and snail pellets, I was satisfied to see dying, shriveled, slugs the next morning.

Mystery solved! It is wild marjoram, Origanum vulgare 'Compactum', so not as aromatic or flavoured as Greek oregano or sweet marjoram. I can't move it outside as we don't have a garden but I'll see how it does on the windowsill... Thanks for the suggestions!

What spices herbs staples do you always need on hand?

I have a full six foot tall spice rack a couple steps from either the prep area or the stove, so most are right to hand. Therefore, my anser is predicated differently. There are a few things that aren't necessarily culinary go-tos, but grab quicks, in a little cupboad next to the hood. The salt and pepper grinders sit by the stove. In the little cupboard are oil and wines for general cooking, Bragg's aminos, regular shaker salt, flor de sal, gray and Himalayan salt, lemon pepper, garlic pepper (with and without salt), mushroom salt, garlic and herb blend, herbs de province, and fines herbs. That is, in the spice realm, mostly salt and pepper, which I use sparingly, and handfuls of herbs together, which I use a lot. My real go-tos, in no order, are fenugreek, smoked Spanish paprika, cumin, hot pepper powders, dried onion and garlic powders, cinnamon, cloves, mace, Mexican oregano, thyme (though I'm more likely to get that from the garden), marjoram. All the rest are used regularly, but in their own time. I figure there are others I use a lot, but if they don't come to mind, they must not be all that. The dried chopped veg are also in the spice rack, and I use them a lot: onions, mixed sweet peppers onions herbs, parsley.

Looks like catnip. If it smells skunky that's what it is. It could also be lemon balm...if it smells lemony, but I'm still thinking catnip.

it's hard to tell without seeing the flowers. It could be catnip, maybe rosemary? It looks like something in the mint family.

Looks like catnip to me! Check out to see if it's lemony or regular. I use catnip to make all sorts of delicious things. Catnip cookies are a favorite here and so is the tea - both the humans and the felines love it. Recently I read of catnip pesto on the Horizon Herbs catalog! Sounds like a winner to me!

It's catnip. A vicious weed here. Lemon balm has more jagged edges.

Agree with others. Definitely not rosemary and my lemon balm has more delicate, thinner leaves.

Find a cat(I'm assuming you don't have one cuz the plant, if it were catnip, would be toast by now)...a friend's, a neighbor's...a cat will tell ya. And yes, there are cats that are not affected by catnip, but they are in the minority.

It does look like catnip. I had to cut mine back a few days ago because it was over my head. Then I was inside later and my cat came up and started biting my hand. I couldn't figure out why, then I remembered I was handling the catnip.

It is in a concrete block and has a concrete block with herbs on each side...
Plus sage and pine needle pile behind it... I thought I had the flower bud in picture....... Raspberry plants nearby too lots of stuff in the way... is prob why...
Now to make tea do I need to dry them first ? buds not open yet but look light lilac colored...

I'd cut off the flowers, they take away form the strength of the Catnip. I'd definitely say it is catnip. I used to sell it. To make a tea just cut some off fresh and put in a cup of hot water and let it steep. I found out the hard way that my herb teas are colorless, not like regular tea! If I'm wrong Lemon balm would make a great tea too!
