Pnbrown, It is very strange. Still rude but I am glad it wasn't a terrible loss! The person probably thought it was edible. I find that most people who steal, don't know very much about gardening. They just grab it and eat it at least in my area. But I am sure some thief will surprise me with what they will take. I read an old thread here from about 7 years ago and the guy said he had compost stolen among other bizarre things. I guess some thieves are gardeners too lol. Hopefully, you will get another volunteer next year to have :). Peachymomo, I am looking for a great green variety. Thanks for letting me know! I am growing a green zebra but is one of my slowest even though it is one of the strongest plants so I'd like to try a different green one next year. I grew the zebra this year for kicks not thinking of thieves lol. 'Chocolate Cherry has been one I've wanted to try before this happened but I didn't think about the dark color. I definitely think they go for the traditional red tomatoes. Fake spiders and snakes is a very cool idea! I don't think they spend a lot of time in the garden more like a grab and dash so they probably would be scared off.

Maybe it's an antlion? I've never seen one before, but what about when his body is without the tweezers? Is it like an ant, or are there wings? It's an ugly bug for sure!

You are right to a point. Certain pests can get out of control because of garden conditions. For example if you over fertilize, you can get lots of lush green growth which can be attacked by aphids. Certain pests are designed to attack certain plants and it is not to eliminate them in nature, but to keep them in check. Like the borers that old rugosa rose stems will get. If you've ever seen rose rugosa growing wild, you may know that it will spread creating large patches. So the borer killing off the old stems helps keep the rose from overtaking everything. Sometimes it is the weather conditions that cause perfect conditions for a pest. So one year you can be perfectly fine and the next have a problem. To keep pests in check, attracting birds to your garden can help. Birds eat lots of pests. I found that the sawfly larva problem I had on my roses diminished after working on attracting birds to the garden. Also working on having plants in successive bloom attracts beneficial insects. Even if you are not into flower gardening, having plantings really will help the health of the vegetable garden in my opinion. I've found the longer I've gardened here the less pest problems I have had, but I know that I can always get an out break of something at any time. Oh and having tolerance for a not picture perfect garden helps too. Some people get all nuts over seeing few spotted leaves, etc. when there is nothing really wrong. Knowing you insects help, some insects are fairly harmless while others need be eradicated quickly like Red Lily beetles. I have no clue about grubs eating cabbage roots. I hope someone post who does. Remy

I've read it is not good for cheesecake but I don't make cheesecake anyway. I have seen recipes for cheesecake using it in Cooking Light magazine, but I dunno if the recipes are any good. Probably not good in danish and the like either. I use it mostly to spread on bagels and toast and english muffins, in which case it tastes just fine. I top it with a dab of homeade jam, yum. Great with lox, since that has a strong taste so I don't miss the extra taste for that application. Fine with those dream eggs, because they were flavored with the herbs anyway, and the neufatchel just added a wonderful creamy texture, even with 1/3 less fat. Since cream cheese is almost pure fat, 1/3 less doesn't make it a diet food by any means, but I like it just as well if not better than cream cheese for what I use it for, so that's what I buy for the calorie savings. I don't mind it in party spreads either. It doesn't matter. Both DGS and I had a great time mixing up the batter. He got to taste the flour, the sugar, the butter, and all the other ingredients as they went into the mix.
