Can't pollinate squash

Since I don't seem to have any bees to pollinate my squash, I decided to try hand pollinating. The problem is although I have plenty of both male and female flowers the female flowers will not open for me to pollinate. I have watched them every day from early until late and they do not open, but sit there closed until they dry up and fall off. Anyone else out there have this problem or know of a remedy ?
