flax seed for chickens - whole or ground?

I've read various studies about feeding flaxseed to chickens and how it will increase the omega 3 ('good' fat) content of the eggs. I have also read in the case of humans the seeds need to be ground or chewed to release the nutritional contents of the seeds, else they 'go straight through you'. So my question is would flaxseed need to be ground when given to chickens, or will the chickens grind it up in their crops?

Any opinions on feeding flaxseed to chickens in general? I don't want to throw off the balance of their other feed too much.

Thanks!

Hayley
