Enterprise apple
Comments (9)It all depends what you want out of your apples. If you have very limited space, you might like something else better. If you have lots of room, why not give it a try. I happen to have an Enterprise tree and I plan to do a bit of top working on it this spring to change some branches to other varieties. Enterprise has the distinction of being a beautiful apple free from disease pressure. This is a worthy keeping point. You could also just graft onto the small tree, no sense in wasting that good little root system. Ted...See MoreCan you bag peaches like apples?
Comments (30)Scott, the kaolin definitely works. The reason I am unsure as to its total effectiveness or not is that I am still not sure I bagged at the appropriate time in some places. Believe it or not, there is one area in Seattle surrounded by a heated up parking lot where the codling moth pressure was high and the moths came as early as about May 13th.....and there is another public space I worked with 20 miles north of downtown Seattle where the codling moth pressure was low and did not come until about July 1st. Imagine a 6 week differential depending only upon the specific micro-climate! As to your other point, I will consider the thinning factor. "1Hilton", earwigs are harmless.....they will find their way to any bag or footie you use. They will not eat the fruit. The only thing I noticed is that they leave little tiny excrement droppings near the stem that have to be washed off. "JohnnyRasbrix", interesting idea about the balloons....See MoreWhen do your McIntosh apples ripen and other apple tales
Comments (4)We have a heavy marine influence, with Summer water temps in the upper 40's to low 50's offshore, hence it stays quite cool at night. Add to that the elevation factor, and the McIntosh are heavily delayed in ripening - as are many other crops. Even Watsonville at sea level send their McIntosh to market no later than mid-September. Go inland to the other side of the mountains, and McIntosh ripens late August and early September. Another yummy Mac-like apple is Oliver (syn. Senator), similar flavor, but much darker red coloring, and maybe slightly more complex of a flavor....See MoreWhat do you do with hedge apples
Comments (11)Our hedge apples would be mostly rotten when it's time to decorate for Christmas. We used them to spell out BOOO in big letters in the yard one year for Halloween but if you do that, you have to pick them up twice and once is enough for me. My kids have used them for bowling down our long asphalt driveway but they don't like the part where they have to go collect them when they're finished having fun. When I was driving, I saw several turkeys that were in an area where hedge apples had fallen so I wonder if they eat the seeds too. It may have just been a coinsidence that they were there. I see turkeys quite often around here....See Morealan haigh
