Enterprise apple

I'm thinking of taking this one out because so many negative remarks. But does anyone think this would be good for adding together with other apples for cider? I'ts only been inground for a year so no big deal if I have to replace it. I did order a Crimson Crisp but I could squeeze it in somewhere else if I keep Enterprise.

Enterprise is good/satisfying (although not great) here for fresh eating.

It ripens late with many other cider varieties, and seems (to my tastes) to have good sugar, so might do well in the mix as a cider variety.

I'd keep it.

This is one variety that has both good and bad qualities. Because it has disease resistance it usually produces a decent looking apple. It stores well also. I've found that it tastes like cardboard when first picked but gets more tolerable after storing for a month. I would never describe the flavor as "Rich", "Spicey" or "Full". My advise to you is to enjoy the tree for what it is. If it is planted wherre passers-by can see it they will all envy the beauty of the tree loaded with good looking fruit. I don't have another variety that has such a high yield of high percentage of "perfect" apples on my low spray program. It is a keeper. I had a few cut up in my breakfast oatmeal today. It's just not the snack apple I would want in the fall.

We've got a forecast of 32 around the corner and that is for town- I usually get a couple degrees colder. Still within the comfort zone for my fruit trees, though. Last year I got down to 24 well after petal fall for everything but latest apples and it was a disaster. It is very difficult to be patient with weather- you scan the long term forecasts and everything seems fine and then one day an unpredicted cold front enters the picture and you are virtually helpless (I have too much stuff to cover). I never feel safe until June, although the latest hard frost date here, below 28, was around the 20th of May and that has happened only once in several decades. That doesn't look too bad to me. My Enterprise does much worse things than this. Each growth tip shrivels, wilts and dies. Usually in association with wet weather. But the lower portions of each shoot remain with large healthy leaves, and it produces a ton of apples. Makes for a bushy tree. The point being that if most of your leaves look good, the tree will likely be OK. But if most of the leaves get red like this, I'd say there's a problem. Although what I don't know.

You only have the one? Obviously storage isn't an issue, then, so you might as well see if it seems ripe to pick. I wasn't really surprised to find mine ripe, as everything has ripened early this year. But it's definitely a leave-to-last kind of apple. Mine actually had a dozen more fruits last year than this. Only the lower scaffolds bore fruit this year. It was one of the younger trees I watered during the drought, so I hope it'll do better in 2013 and get some fruit higher up.

It all depends what you want out of your apples. If you have very limited space, you might like something else better. If you have lots of room, why not give it a try. I happen to have an Enterprise tree and I plan to do a bit of top working on it this spring to change some branches to other varieties. Enterprise has the distinction of being a beautiful apple free from disease pressure. This is a worthy keeping point. You could also just graft onto the small tree, no sense in wasting that good little root system. Ted

I have an Enterprize and I would not ever consider taking it out because of other's comments. It is immune to CAR and bears prolifically. The apples are not my favorite for fresh eating, but they are fine for cooking, applesause, etc. I made fresh (not fermented) cider with about 2/3 Enterprise and 1/3 golden delicious last year and it was the BEST tasting cider I've ever had.

Enterprise is best for fresh eating after storage, not right off the tree.

I too have an Enterprise apple. I agree totally that it is not great eating right off the tree, but two to three weeks later it is delish. It has a very, very thick skin. Mrs. G

Our Enterprise requires lots of pruning discipline, but well worth the trouble. They are outstanding for applesauce because they fall apart when cooked, and I agree with others that the apples become wonderful for fresh eating 3 weeks off the tree. We've used them to make wine, too. Very nice, and I like their Sept ripening season as well. My advice is to wait and see. Our biggest problem is codling moths, which seem to like the Enterprise best.

Thanks for your opinions! I like to hear positives. I figure if one year I miss spraying for whatever reasons at least I might still get some good apples. Thats why I also have Jonafree and Liberty.
