Wondering if I found some brussel sprout seedlings in a local greenhouse or nursery, it'd be okay to plant some now for a fall crop? I'm sorry but I couldnt' offer you any advice about brussel sprouts, as I never tried growing them but would like to.

Just read something today that said to plant out brussel sprouts in late June. I have some starts sitting here that i'll probably plant out in the next week.

I planted Brussel sprouts early June last year, and still the sprouts were tiny when first frost hit, so I already have 24" plants this year..........I guess I'll just see what happens.

We don't have a 'killing frost' for Halloween here in Charlotte, but it is typically our first frost date. Bsprouts will take frost. In fact, it improves their taste considerably. I planted my Bsprout starts this past weekend. I grow Long Island Improved, which depending on where you are, and who you listen to, will take from 90 to 120 to mature. I've been growing them for several years and they take around 110-120 days for me here. So by planting them now, that puts them into production right around the time we start having those wonderful cool evenings of fall. I will typically be able to harvest from them up until sometimes around Xmas (first freeze) .

I started my savoy cabbage in little flats outsidejust about a week ago, they're up but haven't gotten true leaves yet. I'll transplant them to the garden in mid july. Start yours immediately and you should be able to get a crop. BTW, I harvested two huge Savoy cabbages in late December after one night of 8 degree temperatures followed by 13 days when it never got above freezing. The heads were perfect and absolutely delicious.

That's why I'm growing Savoy's...hoping to extend the harvest a bit into the winter this year. I'm really looking forward to getting a crop this year, thanks for the help!

I planted my first shot at brussels sprouts this year with four seedlings purchased at a big box store. I got them in the ground early June and they have been perking along and are three feet tall with very tiny Bsprouts (size of peas) forming in the axis of the leaves. I figure they can go thu a frost and keep right on growing. Do I have to cover them when a frost comes? I know that frosts supposedly improves their flavor, but does it kill the plants? I'm in Zone 5, metrowest Boston. Also, my Brazilian neighbor says he eats the leaves of the plant itself like spinach -- steaming them with butter. Anybody ever eat the Bsprouts leaves? Any and all answers helpful.

Both Savoy and Brussels take temperatures in the low 20 (or less) and will grow actively during the indian summer that follows the killing frost. Temperatures in the mid teens will not kill them but will stop growth. I harvest my BS and SC around Thanksgiving, and Detroit is certainly colder than Boston, the sprouts for immediate eating (what is Thanksgiving without sprouts?) and the cabbage for winter storage. I have eaten Brussels sprouts leaves, but they are by no means first quality greens.

I just planted savoy cabbage (direct sown) and am curious to see how they will do. Last time I grew them they could be harvested early as "baby cabbages" with a small head surrounded by nice savoyed leaves ... so I'm hoping to start picking them in early fall until snow.

A bit late, NYG. I have two varieties, 80 and 110 days. But you should get "sprouts" as the babies are called around here.

Mine's 85 days, which would put maturity in late October. Anyway, I'll learn how it does here.

As a follow-up, I put my six-week starts of brussels and direct sowed savoy cabbage the last week of June. The cabbage looks great, will most likely get full heads!

Bunnies got to my brussels though, and they are struggling to regain their leaves, so probably no brussel crop again!
