Looking great -- again :). And I was very interested to (finally) read your account of the garden "dynamics" (somehow missed it when you first posted it.) Some brainstorming (which may have nothing to do with reality, but here goes): You said you save your own seed (and that you're relatively new at this) so just wanted to mention -- you didn't save squash seed that was just left out in the open to be pollinated, did you? Just a thought (they always hybridize and usually turn out crummy -- best to use store bought seed). Really like your idea about a kid's section -- yet I'll add that I've been able to garden with my grand kids, ages 2 and 3, just with plenty of guidance. They're great at planting large seeds like peas, or root crops like onion sets, gently placing starts into holes, watering. And about the fact that folks don't pick and eat the food -- would a simple sign that says something along the lines of "Like what you see? Wish you could have some? Come work with us Saturday at 9, and take home the bounty!" And/or a sheet with a recipe on it -- used to do that for a CSA. Thanks for the update and pics! I've read a lot of the posts, and as a BUYER of cut flowers, I thought I'd put forth an idea, several ideas, really. It's awfully long, but I was on a roll. ggg Note: The trouble with writing this is that I keep saying, "you need to" or "you should" when I mean, "one could" or even, "possibly this would be of interest to you" -- that's not how it came out, but that's how I mean it, ok? Instead of selling from your subdivision driveway, why don't you think about starting at an antique store? With online auctions, some antique stores that are not located in antique malls are really in sad shape in a lot of places. Look for one with a lot of glassware - i.e. vases and vessels to use as vases. You don't want the one with the $20,000 mahogany breakfronts! Make them a creative offer. I don't know your business, but I would guess you have some artistic bend...am I right? You may have to inflate it a bit when you talk to the proprietor, but why not offer them a class for their customors in "Shabby Chic flower arranging". The benefit to the store owner is they would get more traffic because you'd be advertising the event and it would be a special event they could advertise. You could also use their wares for your demonstrations. And you could really do some cool stuff, I imagine, and possibly sell the finished products, your flowers & the vase. There are a million ways to do this. Seems like using 'Shabby Chic' would draw in a certain type of person who would prefer an informal arrangement,,,but if you change the antique store to a different kind of antique store -- say one that has more of a country feel, you change your class to "Cottage Flower arranging". Or say one who sells antiques with a few reproductions and also more expensive antiques, it would change to "Williamsburg flower arranging" It doens't make any difference - LOL! The REAL object of the game is to find a store owner you love and who loves you. I'm thinking you could set up a sort of French open air market in front of their store on nice days -- using those french floral buckets on a wheeled stand. Maybe they would actually SELL your flowers for you. Or buy your flowers to sell themselves. It would have to be a fairly busy place,,,at least with walking traffic. Near ice cream stores, Starbucks, Trader Joe's, that kind of thing. If this is not your style, then think about what is your style ...Gingham? Organic? Healing Crystals? Just find a store, library, art museum, historical center, botanical garden, living history museum, church, whatever, and find your niche to get your name and product out where people can see you. If you're not opposed to people calling you for flowers or even picking them up from your home, look for public places to hold your flower arranging classes...the public library, public park systems, and the local high schools all have classes, both free and for a fee. You could put something together, talk about your business, talk to people about when and where your flowers will be for sale, have flyers or business cards to hand out..extras for their friends. Offer your specialty -- arranging your flowers in their priceless vessels or possibly doing it at their homes if you're willing. (I realize for some people it's the gardening/farming aspect and for others it's the design element...these are just examples -- just sell what you're good at) Public parks and libraries sounds sort of low-end, so choose municipalities where you think the residents have some extra cash for things like fresh flowers, people to whom $75.00-$100.00 for a flower arrangement is sort of middle of the road figure might be good customers. (and also target places where they don't have room for growing their own... and if not room, per se, then in manicured &/or gated neighborhoods where a lot of blooming flowers would be sort of frowned upon.) Get email addresses wherever you go! Make people sign a sign up sheet for any class you give, any-anything you do, and get those email addys! Then, 5 days before an event, or your sale, or whatever, email them the information. Set up a small website and have a newsletter / event calendar. A lot of people don't know what Agrostemma is, and if you grow it, you need to have a picture up! A way to do this is to tell people it will be ready "in two weeks" or whatever, and if they don't know what it is, say, "Oh, it's gorgeous -- lasts forever in a vase -- you MUST see it. Give me your email addy and I'll send you the picture." Of course, when you email them, just send them the link to your website with the picture on it. AND add the email addy to your list! If you wanted to sell from home, have a set day where people can roll up and get their flowers fresh. Even if it's only the 2nd Saturday of the month, make it EVERY 2nd Sat of the month during the growing season. Print that date on your flyers or business cards and at the bottom of every email and say it in about every third sentence in your classes. Farmer's Markets are fine and dandy, but they look like too much work to me! Sometimes the people working them (around in these parts) rarely smile and don't look like they are having fun at all. They just look hot & tired. I want to have fun choosing my bouquet and admiring their flowers. Ya know what else I'd like? To buy a bouquet and be able to add some super-duper stems to sort of make it my own. So buy a base bouquet and be able to add a variety of stems of my own choosing for extra money. Only 4 different add-on varieties would be enough. Love those giant purple/plum/lilac zinnias. Despise that millet or grass plume stuff. And the floppy faded-red stuff that looks like wilted ragweed. Yuck! LOL! I have more ideas, but I think that's all I'd better write for now! Lime

Found this old thread after doing a search for Far Reaches. We hope to make a visit there this coming Friday. I'm sure I read this thread back in the day as it was shocking and sad that Heronswood seemed to be going away, nursery, gardens, plants, it's people and all. It's interesting looking back knowing how things have turned out lately with the s'klallam tribe having bought and taken over the property, it's gardens and that Dan is at least partially involved in a restoration and expansion of the gardens. At least that's what he said at a Bellevue Botanical Gardens lecture by John Anderson, the Keeper of the Gardens at Windsor Castle. It was a nice talk that was at times funny and others a bit dry, but still enjoyable for this plant nerd. But I must say seeing Dan and hearing that he was still involved in the Northwest plant scene was one of my fav moments. We have been planning a trip to Far Reaches for several years and it always gets postponed as it is quite a drive and really takes an entire day. We have the day off and the weather seems to be cooperating and I have my eye on some epimediums, some Podophyla and some dactylorhiza and I'm sure a few surprise plants will catch our eye and drain our pocketbooks, I've been aware of Kelly and Sue's work for many years and purchased a few plants from them when their nursery was called Reflections Gardens. It was a rather small affair with not much in the way of display gardens and when we first walked up to the selection of plants to buy it seemed uninspiring. But as we walked the few aisles of plants we first saw one cool plant and then another and pretty soon we had a car load heading home with us. They've been settled at Far Reaches for many years now and having perused their catalog I know there are many gems to find.

They sell plants, fish and garden accoutrements, but they have a beautiful setting near Sugarloaf mountain with acres of ponds to walk around. It's a great place for birding, too. We've seen bald eagles there. C&O Canal Towpath in Montgomery County, Md: If you like wildflowers, take a walk in April or May on the C&O Canal Towpath from Riley's Lock or off Sycamore Landing at the end of River Road in Montgomery County, MD. Even in March, bloodroot are everywhere, and later there are wild phlox, Virginia bluebells, Dutchman's breeches, etc, in profusion. Birding is excellent in the spring there, too. Paca was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and this is a restoration of his 18th-century garden, complete with parterres, a knot garden, a pond and a small observatory. They have a wonderful plant sale each March where you can get heirloom plants for cheap: historic veggies, Lady Banks roses, hyacinth bean vines, Job's Tears, bronze fennel, several kinds of old-style hollyhock, and so forth, all for $2-$4 each. It's off Prince George Street in downtown Annapolis. Aside from the open house during the sales, tours of the house and garden are about $8, and well worth it. I can't rate it as I've never been there personally, but have seen it on TV. Ah, time to travel! Woodend Bird Sanctuary in Chevy Chase, Md is an historic site with 40 acres and dates back to 1699. The Mansion on site dates from about 1925 and was designed by John Russell Pope. This is the headquarters of the Audubon Naturalist Society. (Not really a garden. Some of the grounds are landscaped but mostly it is kept wild for birdwatching. They do have nice events, including a Winter Crafts Fair in early December...the ed.) You can proceed to the Smithsonian's museums on the Mall from there. There's a nice rose garden that you can view when in bloom (from afar, no gate entry) behind the Executive Building by the Ellipse. Also view the old specimen trees that have plaques in the area. Some of these are very rare and OLD. The grounds of the White House are not too shabby either, but only to be viewed from the public areas. It has a wonderful fountain (by Bartholdi of Statue of Liberty fame), and a fantastic garden. My DH and I used to eat lunch there several times a week and made friends with the gardeners. They grow a lot of new hybrids and are extremely knowledgeable (and sometimes share). There are quite a few worthwhile gardening programs in the Botanical Gardens - check their schedule. Anyone actually seen the place? **** Monticello: I went down to Charlottesville last October for a Thursday-night stay in a local B&B, then spent Friday at Monticello. It was definitely the way to go, and the place was not near as crowded as on weekends. The gardeners were very friendly once they realized I had a clue, and graciously allowed me to harvest a small number of seeds to take home. Twinleaf, the resident historical-plant nursery, sells period seeds, gardening implements and plants, but they are far from cheap. Chanticleer: We recently discovered Chanticleer, in Wayne, PA (just a little northwest of Philadelphia, right off the PA Turnpike). It's a small (30 acres?) garden on an old estate, very hilly, and contains a house (open to tour occasionally) with gorgeous landscaping and pool/fountains, woodland gardens, a huge pond full of lotus, a "ruin" garden built on the base of an old stone home, veggies, annuals, grasses, perennials. It is truly a great way to spend about 2-3 hours, and they encourage you to walk on the grass and sit on the lawn furniture!
