Dying horseradish? How is that possible...

Hi everyone...

I planted some horseradish a few years ago and it has done very well. This past November, I dug some roots up and then seperated the bigger roots up and planted again. I covered the area up with a few inches of leaves before the first snow fall.

This spring I began to uncover the plot. The roots were beginning to sprout and looked fine. A few weeks later, the sprouts started to die off. We've been under a pretty severe drought lately but I've tried to keep everything moist.

Anyone have any ideas on what is wrong? I thought it was about impossible to kill off horseradish.

Good question. Can't think of much that'll kill horseradish except Roundup or something like it. Haven't had your lawn treated, have you? Water them well and wait a bit, it's a tough plant.

Nope, haven't done any lawn treatments.

We had a good soaking rain yesterday in to last night so maybe in the next few days things will look better.

If they die off, I think I am the first person ever to effectively knock out a plot of horseradish without even doing anything :-)

Sounds like your trees might not have been hardened off when you first planted them, so it is very good that they releafed and have continued to do well. You might benefit from installing a soaker hose around your not yet well established trees. Only, still use the method posted above of checking the moistness of the first two inches of soil, and stop watering before the soil ever becomes too saturated. Since your soil is so well draining, check the soil's moisture levels daily. Whenever the soil feels dry two inches down make certain to water. Monitor the soil this way regularly and do not begin decreasing your efforts until your trees become well established, do this even in the Fall and winter during anytime that the soil is not frozen. Only alter such a practice, during the time that the trees have dropped their leaves. At those times,work toward preventing the soil from drying completely and then try to maintain the soil at only a very, slightly moist level.

Is that the only lithops in the pot? I'm new to these babies too but that looks like it might be rot. Do you have suitable potting medium for them? And how's the humidity?

Hi, Thanks for the reply! Well, it's Iowa. So the saying goes, if you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes. :) It's been mostly hot and humid all summer, 80+ degrees. I don't know what "prolonged" periods of rain are, but it has been storming a full 8 hours about once or twice a week this past month. I watered about every other day in the spring at around 5pm until the grass was established, and about the same lushness as the already growing grass (middle of the lawn.) I stopped watering after that since it rains 1-2 times a week. I have no idea what kind of grass I have. I'm guessing some sort of bluegrass/ryegrass mix from my quick google search. The good grass on the center of the lawn is very dense. I'd like to match that the best I can in the dead spots. Planning on seeding a mix. The arrow in the second picture points west. The problem started on the east side of my lawn. Weirdly though, peeping through my wooden privacy fence, my neighbors grass (that would be touching my grass in that first picture) is green and looks undamaged. I have no idea how long the mud lasted. I moved into the house in mid-November, and immediately raked a ton of leaves that had been sitting for months off the lawn and discovered all the mud. After winter, I planted grass and it seemed fine. The grass was already growing (no new seed) in the "starter spot" of the dying grass. But the last picture (North corner of yard) was new grass this year.

Hi, Alexander. Do you have it in a fast draining mix that doesn't remain wet for long? Sounds like possible rot, which can go south rather quickly. I think it's a good idea to uproot the aloe to see what's going on below. If anything is mushy, including roots, it will have to be removed. That said, it IS possible to re-root an aloe that's lost all its roots by removing all the bad tissue, leaves included, and allowing the bottom to air dry a few days, then sitting it atop DRY soil for 2 months. Once new leaves come in, you'll know the plant has re-rooted. Water need is dependent on where you are, how hot or cold it is. Succulents hold a lot of water and can easily freeze in cold climates. This aloe was potted in poor soil and all the roots rotted. I saved it using the above method. This photo was taken last fall. It's actually filled that pot now with several rosettes. It's in full tropical sun and gets rained on all the time. The soil is 1/2 perlite for quick drainage. By the way, please research low light plants for your living space. Why buy a plant with high sun needs when you cannot provide it. If I may make the suggestion, Sansevierias come in many varieties ...compact, tall, cylindrical, yellow rimmed, or all green ... and may work better for you. I know almost nothing about horseradish. How does yours compare to storebought, and what do you use it for? I like it on roast beef sandwiches and in seafood cocktail sauce, though I know it must have more uses than THAT!

Round-up does not kill horseradish. The only thing I have found that works is mowing. I have almost conquered some in a flower bed after 4 years of cutting it off at the soil line over and over, wearing out the root.

I am in zone 5 and mine is just starting to come up-no more than a couple inches high. I would bet that it was all cozy under that mulch and didn't like being uncovered.

BTW - I never re-plant mine. all it takes is a small bit of root to take off and the roots are so deep it is impossible to get it all.

Anney...

The only store bought horseradish I have had is the stuff in the jars. That is pretty mild compared to the roots I use from my plot. I use it pretty much for the same things you use it for. It's also good mixed in with different types of mustard.

No one can answer you for sure. Every gardener has some "plants that no one can kill" which won't grow for them even though they've tried it four times from four sources in four different locations. I suggest you just keep trying until some stick. I'm sure someone at the Plant Exchange Forum near you would send you a bunch for the cost of postage.

Congratulations! You're the only person I've ever heard of who killed horseradish without even trying! (grin--I'm kidding!) Ordinarily, you plant it...you have it forever.

But, just to correct the record, and with all due respects to Kay and her post above, Round-Up WILL kill horseradish. I "took care of" stands of no longer wanted horseradish for 2 neighbors....one in '04 and the other in '05. Neither stand of it ever reappeared....it's gone. Incidentally, both these neighbors had been trying for several years to kill the plants 1) by digging out all roots they could find, & 2) by constantly trying to eliminate them by cutting any growth at ground level.

I have no idea what happened to yours. I hope you get them back...maybe they'll recover.

I've tried horseradish twice and it does not come back for me either. As I said above, every gardener has those "problem plants".

I have tried it once myself and couldn't get it to do anything, and it didn't come back the next year. I will try again someday, but for some reason horseradish did not like me.

I planted a root I bought at the nursery and it took a couple of months to appear above the soil. I was beginning to worry, but now it has three healthy looking leaves and it sounds like I'm in horseradish for perpetuity now.

It seems that the roots are slowly coming along. I dug one up and noticed there are new roots forming and a few shoots. I guess that it just didn't want to be disturbed. I split it up this past autumn after harvesting a few roots.

Dying horseradish? How is that possible...
