not growing squash this year to eliminate bugs and svb

Does it really help to reduce the squash bug and svb by not growing any squash, cukes or melons for a year? The past few years, I have had so many that it wasn't worth growing squash and melons. I read some where that by not growing any of these for a year, it would seriously reduce their population. Well, I have a lot of extra garden space where nothing is growing and I have the seeds, I'm tempted to try again this year but I really want to try to get of these bugs. I have tried picking by hand the bugs and gave up on that. Is there another way?
