I can't even make this up.

Ok, I decided to make a post on my neighbor, who is so funny. He is a nice guy and when I told him i starting making posts about him, he just laughed and said OK.

He will plant in anything.

He planted veggies in an old stainless steel double sink. He threw it in his yard, added "a special mix" and grows huge veggies.

what is this special mix you ask?

Get this.. I cannot even make this up. He has modified the plumbing in his house so the toilets flush to a special area outside. It goes to a custom composting area that he adds all kinds of cool stuff too. more on that later.

Having grown up on the farm we (and I presume our neighbors)had a separate drain line for our toilet from our wash water drain. I will presume this is the modification your neighbor made, otherwise I am moving. The wash water drain contains lots of chemicals beneficial to growing plants and microorganisms. This area was a surefire source for the night crawlers we used for fishing and I can see many plants thriving in it. Al

Also just a friendly suggestion...I wouldn't eat any of his vegetables if he gives you any :o)

Hmmm... linen above and peanut butter below ... kind of like living inside a big ol' peanut butter sandwich, right? I'll bet everyone would like it and nobody would know why, but they'd probably get hungry in there a lot. It's hard to picture the brick red chair railing in my mind... my picture doesn't look good. But you could trim out the room in honey or chocolate. Yumm! Or are you thinking of jam? Time for a midnight snack, eh? :)

Is the SW macadamia kind of beige or does it lean towards gold? It sounds like you have a lot of options. I would pick a contrast duvet cover, and then pick up gold tones in your fabric on your pillows. We just redecorated our sons room. His walls are golden and I picked a dark brown duvet cover and then added red and gold tones in the pillows.One fabric I picked was a zebra with brick red and gold. It turned out really pretty.

marti8a, I'm not a granite fan either, and I'll say it out loud. :-) There are factors other than durability which bother some people, factors which might also be true for you. I had it in my previous kitchen and found it too loud and clanky. It's way too cold on winter mornings before the heat kicks in (I live in Maine). Also, mine was polished and, aesthetically, I dislike that kind of coffee-table surface in a working kitchen. And speaking to what might have been your real worry about tipping that little glass bottle, I was indeed forever breaking water glasses on the sink cutout overhang or by just dropping them. So folks needn't obsess on the friend/food coloring story; there are many quite legitimate reasons someone might not choose stone beside the staining issue. :-) That said: Marti, what do you like best of the surfaces you've seen/experienced? If you love metal but think stainless is too modern for your vision, have you considered pewter, zinc or copper? Any of these can be very cottage-vintagey. (Full disclosure for this bias: I have copper countertops.) And stainless really IS authentic for the early 20th century, in case that's a worry. Best of luck!

I put mine on the top of the drawers because I wanted to be able to hang a towel off the top one. If it's a paneled door instead of a slab, it might be a good idea to put it in the frame because it IS going to get a lot of hard pulling. My trash pullout has the same handle. I'd prefer all knobs but this is more practical. Needs a little trim (toekick!) and drawer adjustments in this picture but the hardware is there...double drawer of course.

Actually, composted manure is composted manure, from what I understand... regardless whether it's from animal or human waste. I do believe there are some countries where composted human waste is used to fertilize crops.

The key word would be "composted". Once it breaks down in a compost pile, and becomes usable food for plants, I don't believe it's harmful in any way. I think we Americans have become conditioned to think certain things are gross... not to mention, politically correct or not... when in fact, this is simply how nature operates.

Everything is part of a constantly recycling ecological circle. Things are born, they live, and they die... and in death, everything decomposes to be used by the next generation... I know it's all a little more complicated than that, but it's a simplified explanation.

Society has grown a huge gag reflex, it seems... some people freak out when they see blood, or birth, or waste products, etc... but this is all just part of reality, of real life, and not the sanitary, politically correct bubbles some folks have constructed for themselves.

Ok... I'll get off my soapbox now... I'm into reality, myself, and there's not much that grosses me about the realities of life. :-)

He's obviously violating health and building codes.

The pollution(bacterial) may not be limited to his backyard.

Harmful bacteria (E. coli etc.) are not eliminated by composting.
