Need help evaluating book

I've been asked to teach a Horticulture class on herbaceous plants--mostly identification but also habit, care and use. I know my wild plants, but my landscaping experience is not extensive, to say the least, just time maintaining gardens at places I have worked--nature centers and an arboretum. They were not formal gardens, they were wildlife gardens, rain gardens, childrens gardens and a re-creation of a pioneer homestead garden. So I'm both terrified and excited about doing a lot of homework in order to teach the class. The textbooks that have been recommended are

ArmitageÂs Garden Perennials and ArmitageÂs Garden Annuals. I have never seen these books and am waiting now to get hard copies. I looked at the reviews online on Amazon. I would be interested if anyone here has these books and what do you think of them? I really do not know of anything better. I can use as many supplemental resources as I like. The place I am teaching has a fantastic arboretum.
