Thank you all for your helpful suggestions regarding Al's gritty mix. I finished potting everything I wanted to re-pot this weekend (ended up with 32 pots)! There's more to do, but isn't there always? I'm just happy that I completed my goal for this weekend.

Here's a few pictures to share:

Once everything is rinsed, the mix is amazingly clean to work with. I think a little more planning on my part would have made the whole experience more enjoyable. It's just too much to do all the sifting, rinsing the dirt off the plant's roots, and potting them back up over a couple of days. I still have mulch in the back of my truck that I need to unload and sift. I just ran out of steam!

Next time, I'm going to take your suggestion Josh, to start sifting the pine fines a couple of weeks in advance. I need to get some storage containers to keep the separated fines in so they're ready to use whenever the urge strikes. One for 1:1:1 size and one for 5:1:1 size.

This is so exciting. I'm so glad I stumbled upon a blog that referenced Al's mixes. I think this will be a game changer for my potted plants.

Hi Annette!!!

I see that you had a great time making this mix. It isn't easy, but it will get better in the way you go about making your mix...
I see your hard work paid off and will continue to do so...

Bravo for all of the detail and the continued effort you put into making this your best!!! Many give up on a good thing and you went right to town and I am very impressed with what you have done

I also but the five gallon buckets from Lowes an I use them with the covers to protect the sifted fir bark. The other is for the Turface that I have already sifted . I fill those container and work from them. My last containers with the gran-I -grit I just don't sift that at all. I may rinse it, but it is fine to use right out of the bag as well as Cherrystone. This might make it easier for you as well.

The strainer I use for my Turface is a little kitchen strainer that I found at Walmart. Here in this post I have put together for the other forum you can see the strainer . I do have some other larger screens that my DH copied from Al's screens. But my DH used 2x4 instead of 1x4 to build my screens, lol they are a little heavy, but they work well..

Remember. I like to use the five gallon and buy the lids. It keeps it fresh. Then when you need a scoop here and there, it is so convenient to use.!!

Dacaf coffee? Really, Josh? ;-) I don't know... I guess I just always go for the gusto, or something... I couldn't drink decaf coffee, drink a light beer, eat an item because it was low fat, or smoke a light cigarette! If I'm going to go, I'm going to go all out!! :-) I want to really taste my food and/or beverage... and not necessarily consume it just because it's better for me! And before you say anything... ya, I know... smoking isn't good for me, either! It's the last bad habit I have, and I don't do it THAT much! I'm working on it... ;-) Chicken wings are for people who really like to work at eating... they must be, because I can't for the life of me think why else anyone would want to eat the one part of a chicken that hardly contains any meat! I like skin on, bone in chicken drumsticks and thighs, and I like them either marinated and grilled, or breaded and fried, or baked as a whole bird surrounded with vegetables! Seafood and fish are awesome... as long as they're fully cooked! I can't abide the thought that parasite eggs might lie dormant within the flesh... but that's where they might be. Fish and pigs are notorious for carrying parasites. I'd go for the cooked Japanese fish and seafood, but not the raw. Dealing with dogs so much has made me very aware of parasites. I once wrote an article for a breed specific magazine on parasites... the research I did was very eye-opening. And, yes... there are some kinds of worms that humans can get, only one of which is the tapeworm. Fish also contains a little more than trace amounts of mercury and other chemicals, thanks to industrial dumping. It seems to accumulate more in the belly fat of large fish, so be sure to trim all that off when preparing it. In other news... we got some crazy weather last night! We got hit with an ice storm, sort of. It rained or snowed a couple of inches of tiny balls of ice. It was like walking on sand. It was the strangest weather I think I've ever seen! The roads are sheets of ice with a covering of ice balls! It's very slick out there... anyone traveling in it should be very careful! Charades sounds like fun, Al! I haven't played cards or any games in a long time... not since the kids were younger. We're kind of isolated down here... all of our friends live up north. And you guys are scattered all over the country! Funny thing, though... last night, we were talking about a bulb type I want to get, and Old Guy says, "you should get a bunch and send some to your friends... they're always sending you stuff", and I said, "I should... I've got really generous friends, don't I?" And he said, "yes, they certainly are good friends!" So, there you have it... I, too, wish we all lived closer to each other. Can you imagine the fun we'd have together?! Can you imagine all we'd learn together, and what we could accomplish?!! :-) And speaking of bulbs and sending things, I will have care packages for some of you when the weather breaks. Anyway... not much on the agenda today... except hauling more water and chipping ice out of water buckets and horse troughs and poultry pans! I wish the ducks didn't have to bathe so often in winter, but it's what keeps their feathers in good condition, I think. They're incredibly messy! If I can't locate the Day Glo mantis pictures, Mike, I'll be sure to take a new batch next autumn. I noticed several new areas of the gardens that contain egg cases, so we should have quite a nice population this year! Well... it's about that time again... time to make the donuts. Chores call. If I was going to make a list of nice people on this forum, Rosemarie would be the first entry. I love lists of things, thanks for doing this, Rosemarie! Looks like you're probably as big of a fan of spreadsheets as I am, the best list-making tool ever, definitely at the top of the list of things to use to make a list! I'm already on the list, name's Tiffany, so a bit about? As my zone thing says, I live in AL, just north of the FL border, reformed work-a-holic, 7 years in the same house here is the longest I've ever lived in 1 dwelling, and no matter how many former house plants end up being hardy in the ground here, I still manage to find hundreds of sensitive ones to haul in the house for winter. I have just a couple big plants because I have more fun making tons of baby plants than leaving them alone for potential massiveification. I've been a house-plant-o-phile, GW'phile and outdoor gardener for a while but recently had enlightenment about the appeal of succulents so have been also popping in here often this past year. A lot of my interest started when I encountered mini gardens. Perfect for someone who loves tiny plants anyway.

Bkvlad - What we do with our plants is always a personal preference, but what's best for the plant often conflicts with our good intentions. Some things to help you decide what to do. As long as there is green on the leaf and the plant hasn't shed it, the leaf is making more energy than it is using. IOW, it's a net contributor to the plant's ability to make and store energy, so there is some benefit to the plant if you decide to keep the damaged leaves, but not much of a loss if you decide they need to go. If the plant was very weak and circling the drain, you would surely want to keep any green tissues on the plant until the plant is on the road to recovery. I like trunks that look like they've been formed by the hand of nature, that the elements or even natural predation was at some time a part of how the plant was formed, but that's just me. You can very easily have your wish for a branch growing from the leaf axil (crotch) of the lower leaves. All you need to do is cut the plant off just a little above those 2 leaves, and start the top as a cutting. A new branch will grow from EACH of the leaf axils. If you trim one of the new branches off after they both start growing, you will literally be able to design the shape of your trunk by selectively removing branches as the plant grows. You don't have to allow the plant to be in control over how it grows. By taking control, you can have a very unique plant. I water all of my plants on a schedule because I can and it's easier to remember who gets watered every 5 days and who gets watered every 3 days. The advice to water on an as needed basis is good advice if your soil is such that that it remains soggy after watering long enough to inhibit efficient root function or actually cause root rot or the death of fine roots. If your soil is consistent with how it looks in the picture from top to pot bottom, you actually can water on a schedule w/o worry, but do be reasonable. Water your plant before it tells you if needs water. Wrinkled leaves or loss of turgidity (internal water pressure) on a jade plant tell you the plant has suffered drought stress for quite some time, not something the plant likes. You have a soil that allows you to avoid this limitation, so take advantage of it and don't follow a limiting convention. Keep in mind that just because a plant tolerates harsh or limiting conditions, is not even close to an indication it likes them. Jades actually like plenty of water and fertilizer - they just don't tolerate wet feet. Great job turning your plant around, BTW. Al

Always fun to list faves, though I think the best is the one that's blooming now! My current summer faves: brunfelsia Isola (lactea x americana, I believe, though no one seems to know for sure)is a blooming machine: I should have taken a picture a week ago, over 30 blooms in a 12" pot! It does get mealy bugs in winter, but it can handle a bit of abuse. Aglaia odorata, aka rice flower: mine's now 3 ft. tall, and seems to bloom after putting out new stems. Interestingly, the fragrance was almost the same as a cymbidium sinense orchid that bloomed at the same time -- heaven to your nose! Trachelospermum 'Mandianum', aka asiaticum, aka whatever they're calling it these days: has stayed in the same pot for years, almost a natural bonsai at this point, keeps popping out small yellow flowers with a marvelous, soft fragrance. And you gotta love the way old leaves turn red before dropping, for that two tone effect! And last but not least, now that I've figure out I wasn't watering my MOO enough, it's blooming all summer long! Yellowthumb, brunfelsia in Ontario? Have you checked flora exotica? Enjoy the scents!

Funny you should say that about your screens - I copied your post to a Word document I started on the gritty mix. LOL!

So I don't need to screen the chicken grit? Just rinse it in the colander? That's good to know. Plus, that would save me one Advil later!

I am going to get those Lowe's buckets with the lids. I have a small place and they're skinny and I can stack them too.

Your Adeniums are beautiful. I think the Star Wars character is Jar Jar - they have the same mouth. It's funny, of all the plants I've had I've never had an Adenium (desert rose, right?). After seeing your pictures, I think I'm going to have to get one. I like the one with the darker red flowers. They kind of remind me of the pony tail palm with their big bulbous trunk.

You're in V Beach? I was just in the area in July. My husband is at Wallops, as are a lot of people from Kennedy Space Center. I'm going to go to the Norfolk Botanical Garden next time I make a trip up there. Is it nice?

I hear ya - I was just thinking how there are different types of plant people - people who specialize and become experts in one type of plant, people who only grow plants for food, organic people, people who don't even know plants exist on the earth, and people who collect any plant that catches their eye. Of course, I fall into the latter category.

I realized I was a collector a short time ago when my husband and some friends were hanging out talking about classic Harleys. Now they're hard-core Harley dudes, but one of the guys has all different sorts of bikes and parts so I asked him why he had it all and he replied, "I don't know really, I just like them all and when I see one I like and it's a good deal, I get it." He said, "I guess I'm like you are with plants, I'm a collector."

I like to consider myself a Jack-of-All-Trades, Master-of-None. I know just enough to be dangerous, but my plants love me, the hummingbirds and butterfles love my garden, and that's what brings me happiness and peace after a stressful day. And that Scarlet, is all that matters :-)
