Uh OH, DH was "helping"

So, while I was at work, he decided to "help" with the tomato bed! He asked me how much fertilizer to use (I usually just use home made compost, but had bought some organic fertilizer to use at planting time)
I said "just read the box" he heard "just use the whole box" ! AKKKKK
We figured out that it was about 1 1/2 what should have gone in!
I left the soaker hose on for about 2 hrs yesterday, hoping to dilute it somewhat.
I did plant today, and one of the maters was really droopy, I shaded it during the heat of the day, and it has perked up since it has cooled off.
I'm hoping that with washing the stuff out, maybe if I don't add ANYTHING the rest of the season we should be OK????? It was 5-10-10.
I hope I don't have to re-do my mater garden! What do you think? I've only used fertilizer occasionally, so I'm not too familiar with it! Nancy

1.5x 5-10-10 isn't anything to worry about unless your seedlings are extremely young...and even then they probably wouldn't get burnt too badly, if at all.

It doesn't matter a whole lot of plants get droopy when it's hot out...when the sun goes down and isn't beating down on the plants, if the plants perk up things are just fine.

You may have to add more fertilizer (or at least N) during the course of the season, depending on what's already in the soil and irrigation/rain. What you applied really isn't an obscene amount or anything...I've seen people do way worse with conventional fertilizer applications.

nc-crn Thanks so much! I was so worried about the one tomato wilting!
I've always used home made compost, but after a couple of not so great years with the maters, thought I might add a little organic stuff.
I'll probably mulch with some grass clippings if I can get them from the neighbor! Should give some N without going crazy!

Cathe - welcome to the forum! Our FAQ has a lot of information on host plants and nectar plants and raising butterflies. If you plant both hosts and nectar plants, you'll get lots of butterflies. The butterflies lay eggs on specific host plants and that's how we get our "baby" caterpillars. The egg hatches, the caterpillar emerges, and becomes a virtual eating machine until it reaches a certain size, after which it pupates, forms a chrysalis, and emerges after approx. 2 weeks, as a butterfly. You live in Texas, the state which has the most butterfly species of any in the nation. Lucky girl! The Dallas Lepidopterist Society has a great website on host plants and nectar plants as well and lists the butterflies most commonly found in Texas. Yeah, coconut palms can take along time to show any sign of growth. Mine took a few weeks to a month to start growing depending on time of year. The ones I got in winter took almost a month with low lighting and temps, they did not start to really grow until just before winter. The one I got during late spring took off really fast, within a week that I got it it already pulled up a spear. I planted her in the ground 3 days after I got her too. Of course though it was in the 90f's with low 60fs at night. I think the palm will be fine, just keep an eye on her make sure you water her right. They are very tough palms but are fussy when it comes to their roots. Try to disturb them as little as possible. I do not know if you know this but try not to water in winter, only water if you have to and water very little. Be sure to take her outside and leave her out in summer. But start off in shade and work your way into direct sun light slowly. She will recover sooner with the warmer temps outside. Good luck and keep us updated :)

davidrol, The faucet was an American Standard---about twenty years old. It had been slowly falling apart in various ways for some time. We had been putting up with it until now. I am shocked to hear that the hose could not have been full of holes, because when I emptied out the cabinet and turned on the faucet, the hose was leaking at multiple points along the length---kind of like a soaker hose. Unfortunately, the faucet has been put out in the garbage, so I can't offer a post-mortem autopsy to provide any other answers. As I said, the faucet must be about twenty years old, so I think it provided adequate service for some time before giving out. This was one of the first faucets made with a pull out sprayer instead of one on the side--quite advanced for the time, but archaic compared to modern faucets. The pull out sprayer portion was made of black plastic. You pressed on the top of the sprayer and the water stream would change to a spray and automatically go back to the regular stream when it was turned off. It stopped going back to the regular stream when it was turned off years ago, so we had to turn it on and off manually ourselves. We had a friend who worked for a plumbing supplies distributor at that time and he was able to get us a good deal on it at the time.

That's wonderful! Lots of people like gray and red - I am not among them, because I think reds like that one really shine in a warm scheme ... so I'd choose a soft, vanilla-creamy ivory that leans toward palest gold. Look at B. Moore's Greenmount Silk, Hepplewhite Ivory, Windham Cream, and Montgomery White. That background will also give you lots of options for rug colors, from simple sisal to tribal patterns; and for cushions, in bold solids, traditional or graphic prints and patterns, or textured neutrals. It also looks good with virtually every wood tone in floors and furniture; with brass, silver, and china finishes in lamps, accessories and frames; and also with touches of black.

The only way we learn is by making mistakes. I'm hoping the tomatoes do well, but the helping husband is a far more precious commodity.

Did he apply the whole box within a few feet? how big is your garden? Your leaving vital information out.. What is the ingredients in the fertilizer?

Also, I don't see organic fertilizer 5-10-10.. What fertilizer was it exactly?

Before you take the neighbor's grass clippings, be sure he hasn't used any lawn treatment or you maters will be toast.

lucile- I'll keep the hubby, I guess. This year is 35 years! We shall see after I retire this summer, though!

Wolverine- I know the neighbors don't use anything on their lawn.

Raw Nature- I don't know. The box has been thrown out.

They should be fine... Although, I highly doubt the 5-10-10 was organic.. Don't worry about anything! Watch, you'll break the records for tomato production this year! Can you imagine... Your neighbors will be grateful youre giving them your excess tomatoes instead of zucchini! You are going to wish you knew witch fertilizer you used!

A-1 and GreenAll both make organic 5-10-10 fertilizer...there's most likely more.

I've used A-1 in trial gardens for research, but it was a liquid...don't know if they make a powder version.

Mine own DH thought the wood ashes would be great for the garden but wasn't sure so he dumped them mostly in one pile, which became one soaking wet, cement-looking heap that made me say "What is that??!!" Got most of it out since I want to plant tomoatoes in that area this year.

Well, my plants are looking great, just forgot about the "extra" stuff added and added a little more! Oh MY!
I do have some flowers happening!
Should I just flood them to get rid of some of the xtra?
