Any ideas what's going on with my tomato plants (pictures)?

Note: I'm not sure about the policy on posting in multiple forums, but I also posted this message in the tomato forum in hopes of receiving more input, thank you.

I'm wondering if anyone can provide some help as to what might be going on with my tomatoes. These are "Organic Heirlooms" purchased from the grocery store and were transplanted at the end of May.

The one on the left is Cherokee Purple and seems to be growing well, but only has one green tomato and for some reason isn't producing flowers or fruit, only leaves and small buds.

The other is German Striped, and this one was about even with the other plant until a couple of weeks after transplanting when it started to lag behind. Then the leaves started yellowing from the bottom up, and this hasn't really stopped ever since.

I'm using Al's 5:1:1 mix with Flower-Tone fertilizer and dolomitic lime mixed in. I have also been feeding with fish emulsion and Flower-Tone in water. After the yellowing started appearing on the second plant, I tried aerated steer manure tea as a foliar feed and soil drench which seemed to really help initially, but the yellowing eventually continued. I have watered with 1-2 teaspoons of epsom salts a couple of times, and usually pH the water to about 6.3 using white vinegar or a white vinegar and powdered egg shell mixture.

I don't have any ideas but I'm having the same problems this year and it's really bad. Out of 9 plants 2 are on death's doorstep ready to be pulled and 2 more are getting symptoms so whatever it is it might be spreading. I suspect blight. We had tons of rain last month (over 10 inches).

When my plants had those yellowing leaves like yours I pruned them off. This was 3 weeks ago. The pretty much dead plants just kept going downhill. I was going to search the tomato forum to figure out what I did wrong and maybe try not to do the same thing next year.

BTW: Due to all the rain here in Chicago, I have mushrooms growing out the drainage holes in many containers.

It appears to be a newly emerged leaf; the veins are greener than the surrounding tissue. This is not too unusual but you have some experience with the crop and therefore it is significant. I think that it is a nutrition symptom. If you did not fertilize, try some starter type fertilizer -preferably water soluble- which can be applied over the top. Go very lightly. Half dose is recommended. If you did apply fertilizer then it might be a problem of uptake. Too little water; slow release etc.

IMO just early season environmental damage........sun, wind, temp swings. Keep an eye on them, but they should be ok.

The brown you are seeing is just the inside of the tomato that has been exposed to air and darkened. The tomato skin split and splitting is quite common in early spring because of the inconsistent soil moisture levels. It often begins with what is called "zippering" (Google tomato zippering) and the zipper then splits open. Just like the zipper on our jeans can if we wear them 2 sizes too small. :-) With tomatoes it is a flush of water intake that causes it to split. Okay. Caterpillars are easy, but neem doesn't work so great against them. Get some BtK (Bacillus thuringienisis var. kurstaki). Don't know about brands in your part of the world, but it's very common. Over here, it goes by names like Caterpillar Killer, Dipel, Thuricide, etc. and comes in both liquid and dust form. That will take care of them, if you're sure they're caterpillars (I can't see the caterpillars at the photo resolution available). Bt is very specific in what it kills, and it only kills lepidopteran larvae, i.e., larvae of butterflies and moths. If it's not caterpillars, it won't do anything. Which is good news for pollinators and beneficial predator bugs. The caterpillars have to eat the Bt. It works by attacking their gut once they ingest it. It's not a contact poison. So be sure to spray/dust all surfaces of the plant and both tops and undersides of leaves. It won't burn your plants if you apply in the day, but UV will inactivate it fairly quickly, so spraying in the late afternoon/evening is best, especially since a lot of caterpillars feed more actively at night.
