I have hops, globe artichokes, asparagus crowns,

These plants are available for trade. I'm looking for mostly edibles (fruit, nut, berries, roots). Specifically I'd like to have rhubarb and Jersalem artichokes.

What kind of asparagus crowns do you have to offer? I have Jerusalem Artichokes.

They are Mary Washington grown from open polllinated seed.

We live in Northeast Pennsylvania, so they would not overwinter here. We start them in January, put them out in March to simulate winter and theoretically remember to take them in if we get a freeze. We would plant them in June. Is it possible to ship plants here? Our asparagus was planted so long ago but my husband thinks they are Martha Washington plants. We would send you roots. I've had good luck vernalizing young Imperial Star artichoke plants in the refrigerator in past years. I think it's more reliable than leaving it up to Mother Nature, at least in Michigan's variable (wierd!) climate. I do it when they have about 6 leaves and are about 4 inches tall. If all went well, I got them sown on time (early March), germination was prompt, etc., it should now be early/mid May. I let them get a little on the dry side but not wilted, since moisture is the enemy in this operation. I like to dust the foliage of each plant with a little Gold Bond type medicated body powder -- the zinc oxide and plant essential oils are fungicidal -- be sure to get some down into the crown of the plant. Then, I wrap each transplant individually (note, no pot on these, I grow them in cell trays and just pull them from the cells) in a paper towel or napkin, and pack them into a big ziplock bag. Then, seal it up. This goes in the bottom of the fridge for 10-14 days. During this time, they will turn somewhat yellow, they will curve up in response to gravity, and when they come out, will look kind of sad. But, as long as they are kept reasonably dry, they won't rot and dry. It is a GOOD IDEA to pull them out every few days and inspect, so that you don't have a nasty surprise of rotten plants at the end of this process. If rot does start, pull off the damaged leaves, dust with more Gold Bond, and repack in fresh, dry paper towels. You could probably save some of the little packs of silica gel from clothing, shoes, electronics to throw into the ziplock to help control the moisture during this vernalization. After the 10 days minimum, pull them out, repot them into about 4 inch pots, water them well, and stick them in the shade for 24 hours to recover. Then, I put them in the greenhouse and really baby them for a few weeks. At this point, it's probably mid June, about Flag Day, and they need to go into really rich, well-drained, well prepared ground or very large containers (the rope-handled utility tubs are a great size and are relatively cheap and durable as planters). They like a lot of fertilizer and water (but not soggy soil, or they'll rot). You should start seeing blossom initiation in mid/late July or early August, and will get artichokes into October. This has worked for me in the past. Hope this helps.

What an excellent thread. Thanks to everyone who has been here before me. Gophers rule here, so my artichokes are planted in raised (really really raised at 2' off the ground) beds with gopher wire on the ground under the whole bed. For me the whole point of growing my own artichokes is to get them when they are young and small and I can steam 3-4 of them for myself....yum. Here are my questions: In my Zone 8b, should I cut the whole plant all the way to the ground about now, or just the old blooming stalks? I just went out today and pulled out all of the dead and dying leaves from the outside and there are still a lot of healthy primary plants or crowns in there. Clearly this bed is overcrowded. Should I try to dig the whole (please please please say "no") plants out and reduce them in size, or can I just take the pups off of the outside (oh that would be sooooooo much easier). Any help would be appreciated. Susan

It would be awesome if artichokes will live on as a perennial here. inulover, I think it is too late. Silvia gave me a seedling in fall. I raised it over fall and winter. Hi!
I have some everbearing raspberries i would like to trade for your hops, i also have some herb sorrel as well as some canna bonfire , not many people know this but you can drink the nectar of the flowers, i would like to trade some for your artichokes.

You have no email link on your member page, thus no way to email you.

I am interested in asparagus and globe artichoke

I have chocolate scented sunflowers (Jerusalem artichokes) The flowers have a sweet fragrance and the tubers are good to eat.

Also, blackberry plants, maypop, lemon seedlings, moon and stars watermelon seeds.

if you are interested in getting cuttings, I have apples, peaches, nectarines, apricots, plums, prickly pear cactus

Hi,

If you still have hops rhizomes, I would love to trade for some kind of berry plant (blueberry, blackberry, maybe something else depending on your preference). Alternately, I could send you a small amount of Jerusalem artichoke and/ or some assortment of nut or fruit tree seeds or something else. I'd love to work out a swap! Thanks!
