Globe Artichoke (Last Questions .. I hope!)
Comments (4)For future reference you can just tack these additional questions on to your previous posts and it bumps them right back up to the top. No need to start a new one each time. That way all of your questions and the answers given are tied together and we don't have to search out the previous questions or rehash previously given info. As to the mix, only soil-less potting mixes are recommended for containers no matter what you are growing in them. No regular garden soil, no Miracle Grow brand Garden Soil only MG Potting Mix, no potting soil and no regular top soil. All of those compact far too much, do not drain effectively in containers, and cause root root. You'll also find any number of recommendations for potting mixes over on the Container gardening forum here. As to eventually planting them in straight clay soil? I can't help you with that as I don't have clay. Can only say that from all I have read, those that have to deal with heavy clay soil don't seem to find it good for growing much of anything. The Soil Forum here has many discussions on how to amend clay soils so that they can be used for planting so you might want to do some reading over on that forum too. Dave PS: I am curious as to why you want to shade these since chokes are full sun lovers?...See MoreGreen Globe Artichoke planting question
Comments (3)Hi Bart, Since you read our last thread on this subject,I'm not sure what else can be said.... Except possibly to reiterate some highlights,of which I will be glad to do... 1. These monsters get very big, I cannot keep mine where I transplanted it to,because it has already outgrown that spot ;-( Poor planning on my part,I thought giving it a 5' circumference would be fine...not so.... 2. It does grow back each year, after the 5th year or so,you break it up (vernalize) and propagate it to fill your garden or bless others with the "gift of life" Today's Pics 5-15-2010...See MoreArtichoke Question
Comments (3)Hmm, this question has been floating unanswered for a while. I'm not an artichoke expert, but maybe I can begin an answer. Yes, there are different types. Two main types are the Green Globe type and the other is the Imperial Star type. They do have distinctive, but slight differences in shape. I'm not sure about the heart size being related to type, though. It could be, or it could just be natural variation in the plants. Artichokes don't seem to have undergone the same intensive breeding as some other vegetables, or maybe they just don't lend themselves very well to standardization. When you buy artichoke seed, there is great variation in whether the seeds germinate and if they do, how they grow. And another thought is that maybe the ones with bigger hearts just had better fertility and water during growth. So, I don't know the answer to your whole question, but there's a bit of what I do know and a couple of guesses. Cheers!...See MoreGlobe Artichokes
Comments (2)Yes, I'd be interested to know how the Emerald variety does in your area. I know you receive a bit more cold weather than we do, and your hot temps are hotter than ours, but other than that we have similar climes....See Moredigdirt2
